BYD says its Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h (308.4 mph) at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany on 14 September 2025, surpassing the 490.484 km/h benchmark the company attributes to the quickest petrol-powered car. The figure is a manufacturer-reported production-car record claim; the sources available here do not establish independent certification of the Papenburg run or its full measurement protocol.
What is the Yangwang U9 Xtreme’s top speed?
BYD announced on 22 September 2025 that the U9 Xtreme reached 496.22 km/h at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg on 14 September. The company says German track specialist Marc Basseng drove the car and characterizes the result as a global production-car top-speed record. BYD compares it with a maximum of 490.484 km/h for the quickest petrol-powered model. Both the record characterization and the comparison are BYD’s claims, not independently established findings in the sources cited here.
BYD’s announcement identifies the car as the U9 Xtreme in production guise, also called U9X, and says it is being made available to customers in a limited series of no more than 30 units. That describes a highly limited customer offering, not ordinary mass-market availability. BYD’s announcement does not, in the material cited here, establish that a separate authority certified the Papenburg speed using a published two-way protocol.
How the U9 Xtreme differs from the U9
BYD says the Xtreme began as the U9 Track/Special Edition and builds on the architecture of the U9 sold in China, with changes to its electrical system, powertrain, tyres and suspension setup. The company reports these specifications; they should not be read as independently measured test results.

BYD executive vice president Stella Li called the result a moment of pride for the company’s research and development team and said the fastest production car was now electric. Basseng credited the U9 Xtreme’s performance and the focus enabled by its quiet electric motors. Those are the executives’ and driver’s perspectives, not independent comparisons of electric and combustion-engine performance. Both remarks appear in BYD’s release.
The Nürburgring lap is a separate achievement
On 22 August 2025, the U9X completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:59.157, with Moritz Kranz driving, according to the circuit. The Nürburgring says the lap was more than five seconds quicker than the previous time in the electric super sports car class and made the U9X the first vehicle in that class to go below seven minutes. The circuit describes the Nordschleife as 20.832 kilometres long.

This lap time and the Papenburg top speed measure different things on different dates and tracks: one is a circuit-lap result, the other a top-speed run. The Nürburgring describes its record-lap procedure as using calibrated timing equipment, a notary accompanying official record and lap-time attempts, vehicle inspection, and TÜV Rheinland checks and documentation of standard conformity. It also describes a flying start and a 20.8-kilometre measurement for a full Nordschleife lap. Those procedures concern Nürburgring laps; they do not certify the separate Papenburg speed claim. The strongest supported wording is that BYD reports a 496.22 km/h production-guise run and calls it a production-car record. The Nürburgring independently reports the U9X’s Nordschleife lap result and explains its own lap-record checks, but that is not an independent validation of the Papenburg run. The sources cited here do not establish whether another authority certified the top-speed result under a published, symmetric two-way protocol. That distinction matters when comparing record claims: the reported number and the verification method are separate questions.
