After a seven-hour drive each way between Toronto and Timmins in a GMC Acadia, MobileSyrup’s Brad Bennett came away impressed by Super Cruise and less tired than he expected. The experience changed his view of the system—but it was still a single driver-assistance system on one trip, not a car driving itself or a controlled safety test.
What Super Cruise did on the Toronto–Timmins trip
In a November 17, 2024 review, Bennett described using Super Cruise for a roughly seven-hour drive each way. On supported highway stretches, the system followed the lane and traffic while monitoring his attention. It also changed lanes automatically in some mapped areas. Bennett said the long drive left him less fatigued and concluded, “Absolutely, after using this system on a long drive, I was blown away by how well it worked.” That is his personal verdict on that vehicle and trip, not a comparative result. Where he took over
Bennett reported taking control around construction where lane markings were unclear and when approaching lane endings. He also encountered stretches farther north where lane-change functionality was unavailable. Those are observations from his Acadia, route and trip; they do not establish how every Super Cruise-equipped vehicle, software version or road will behave.
Super Cruise is hands-free assistance, not driver-free driving
GM describes Super Cruise as hands-free driver assistance on compatible roads and under conditions that support operation. It can manage steering, acceleration and braking, and may make lane changes, but the driver must continue to monitor the vehicle and keep eyes on the road. “Hands-free” describes the driver’s hands, not permission to look away or stop supervising.

GM’s overview reports more than 600,000 compatible road miles in the United States and Canada. Coverage can change, and the mileage figure does not mean every highway—or every segment of a route—is supported. Check the current Super Cruise coverage map against your actual route before relying on the feature.
Check vehicle, route and service-plan compatibility
Availability depends on the vehicle’s model year, trim and equipment, as well as market and road conditions. GM’s product page lists eligible model lines; confirm the exact vehicle and equipment rather than assuming a model name alone is enough. The page also says an active OnStar Super Cruise or OnStar One plan is required. Trial periods, bundled service and ongoing terms may vary, so verify the current offer for the specific vehicle and market.

- Route: Check the official map for supported roads along the full journey, not just the start and destination.
- Vehicle: Confirm the model year, trim, required equipment and market eligibility on GM’s current listing.
- Feature scope: Verify whether lane changes and any towing-related support apply to that particular vehicle.
- Service: Check what plan is included, when it expires and what ongoing terms apply.
What the cost example does—and does not—tell you
Bennett’s review gave a historical Canadian-market example for the configuration he priced in November 2024: a $3,385 Super Cruise option, a required $700 towing package on that configuration, three years of included software service and then a $30 monthly subscription. These are the review’s reported figures for that vehicle and time, not current prices or a universal package requirement. Ask a dealer for current vehicle pricing, package availability and plan terms in your market.
How to interpret GM’s scale and future plans
GM announced on April 28, 2026 that customers had driven one billion Super Cruise miles, across nearly 750,000 enabled vehicles in 23 North American models. These are company-reported usage totals; they are not an independently audited safety measure and do not, by themselves, establish how safe the system is.

In an August 18, 2026 overview, GM described Super Cruise as available on more than 20 North American models and said eyes-off highway capability was planned for 2028, beginning with Cadillac ESCALADE IQ. That is a manufacturer-announced future plan, not a feature available today or a guaranteed launch date. For current operation, the driver must keep eyes on the road.

Bennett’s answer was yes: he said the experience made him willing to buy a vehicle with the technology. For a buyer, the useful question is whether the specific vehicle’s supported roads match your regular driving, whether you are comfortable supervising and taking over when needed, and whether the service terms make sense over the time you expect to own it. His reduced-fatigue impression is a meaningful account of one long drive, not a promise that every driver or journey will feel the same.
