BYD says the U9 Xtreme set a 6:59.157 lap of the Nordschleife on 22 August 2025, driven by Moritz Kranz. Rimac lists a 7:05.298 lap for the Nevera, making the U9 Xtreme 6.141 seconds quicker on the two manufacturers’ published times. BYD describes the car’s output as over 3,000 PS, not 3,000 hp.
Which car set the record?
The record-setting car was the YANGWANG U9 Xtreme (U9X), a track-focused, limited-production version in BYD’s U9 family. BYD announced the Nürburgring result on 22 October 2025 and dates the lap to 22 August 2025. It gives the time as 6:59.157, with Moritz Kranz driving the 20.832-kilometer Nordschleife. The Nürburgring’s own account lists the same time and driver.
That distinction matters: the result is not evidence that every standard U9 has the same specification or lap pace. BYD says production of the U9 Xtreme will be limited to no more than 30 units, so the record car is also an exceptionally limited variant rather than a broadly available U9 configuration. BYD’s announcement describes the vehicle and result; the Nürburgring account confirms the circuit-side lap details.
How does its lap compare with the Rimac Nevera?
| Car and record claim | Published Nürburgring time | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| YANGWANG U9 Xtreme | 6:59.157 | BYD dates the lap to 22 August 2025; Moritz Kranz drove it on the Nordschleife. BYD and the Nürburgring report the same time. |
| Rimac Nevera | 7:05.298 | Time listed by Rimac for the Nevera on its record page. |
| Difference | 6.141 seconds | Calculated by subtracting the two reported lap times; it is not a separately published statistic. |
On those published figures, the U9 Xtreme is 6.141 seconds quicker than the Nevera. This is a comparison of separate reported laps, not a simultaneous head-to-head test, and it does not establish a universal ranking across all versions of either car. Rimac’s Nevera page lists the Nevera at 1,914 hp and separately identifies the Nevera R at 2,107 hp. The 7:05.298 Nürburgring result is identified as the Nevera result, so the Nevera R’s output should not be substituted when describing that lap.

What does “over 3,000 PS” mean?
BYD’s stated figure is over 3,000 PS, a metric horsepower unit. It is not a manufacturer-published “3,000 hp” figure. Keeping the unit as BYD gives avoids treating two different notations as interchangeable or implying a more precise conversion than the announcement provides.
BYD says the U9 Xtreme has four high-performance motors, each capable of 30,000 rpm, and a power-to-weight ratio of 1,217 PS per tonne. Those are manufacturer-stated specifications for the Xtreme, not specifications to assign automatically to the standard U9.

What is known about the Nürburgring setup?
For the Nürburgring configuration, BYD lists a redesigned cooling system, a titanium-alloy carbon-ceramic braking system, and GitiSport e·GTR² PRO semi-slick tires developed jointly with Giti. These details help identify the record configuration; they do not, by themselves, explain the time gap to the Nevera.
The venue’s record-process description adds context to the figures. The Nürburgring says official record attempts use calibrated timing and a notary, include a vehicle conformity check by TÜV Rheinland, and follow a defined track length and start/finish line. Its account describes a flying-start full lap measured at 20.8 kilometers; BYD gives the Nordschleife length as 20.832 kilometers. Those are the sources’ respective descriptions and levels of precision, not necessarily conflicting course measurements.

Does the time prove why the U9 Xtreme was faster?
No. The published times establish the reported gap, but the available accounts do not isolate its cause. The Nürburgring says U9 development testing there began in July 2024 and that testing data fed into development of the U9 Xtreme. BYD quotes Kranz describing the challenge of balancing a high-powered EV platform with chassis setup demands. Those are useful descriptions of development and setup, not an independent technical analysis showing which factor produced the lap-time difference.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: “We are dedicated to pushing the limits of what can be achieved through technology, and the Nürburgring is such a legendary challenge for cars and drivers that it is only natural for our engineers to pursue their dreams.” Kranz said: “The Nürburgring Nordschleife is the most demanding track, and our lap time is a testament to the development skills of BYD and YANGWANG.” Both statements appear in BYD’s announcement and should be read as the speakers’ views, rather than as independent comparative findings.
