Yamaha presented the PROTO HEV, a series-parallel hybrid motorcycle prototype, at Japan Mobility Show 2025. The company says riders can switch between “Serene” and “Spirited” performance characteristics, but it has not announced a production model, price or sale date.
What Yamaha showed at Japan Mobility Show 2025
Yamaha identified the PROTO HEV as a “Reference vehicle” at the show. The exhibit describes a series-parallel hybrid (SPHEV) that combines an electric motor and combustion engine. Yamaha says it is designed to offer two distinct riding characteristics: “Serene” and “Spirited.” Yamaha’s PROTO HEV exhibit description and its Japan Mobility Show 2025 announcement present these as intended characteristics, not independently tested outcomes.
What “Serene” and “Spirited” mean
Yamaha frames “Serene” as calm, quiet city riding and “Spirited” as powerful, dependable performance in the countryside. The company has not published measured performance figures for either characteristic in the exhibit description.
How Yamaha’s series-parallel hybrid works
In a separate explainer about its SPHEV technology, Yamaha describes a system with a drive motor for propulsion and a generator motor connected to the engine. The engine can generate electricity and can also drive the vehicle. Yamaha’s explainer outlines battery-drive operation, regenerative braking, series-hybrid operation, engine drive at medium and high speeds, and added motor assistance in “Dual Boost” and “Triple Boost” modes. Yamaha’s SPHEV technology explainer discusses these as elements of technology under research and development; it does not confirm every one as a specification of the displayed PROTO HEV.

Yamaha says the SPHEV approach is intended for mid-size scooters and could fit a vehicle about the size of a conventional engine-only motorcycle. The explainer also notes that some images and video use CG, so concept visuals should not be taken as proof of final production hardware.
What Yamaha’s over-35% fuel-efficiency claim means
Yamaha says its proprietary power and energy management technology improves fuel efficiency by over 35% versus vehicles in the same class, measured in WMTC2-2 mode. The company labels this an “in-house figure.” The exhibit description does not name a comparison vehicle or provide further test methodology, and the figure is not presented there as an independent test result. Yamaha’s exhibit description supplies the claim and its stated test mode.

Is the PROTO HEV going on sale?
Yamaha’s Japan Mobility Show announcement calls the PROTO HEV a reference vehicle. The official show materials do not announce a production commitment, retail launch date, price, battery capacity, engine displacement, range or full production specifications. The evidence supports describing it as a prototype, not as a motorcycle confirmed for sale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How it differs from Yamaha’s PROTO PHEV
The PROTO HEV is not the same concept as Yamaha’s separately exhibited PROTO PHEV. Yamaha describes the PROTO HEV as a series-parallel hybrid prototype, while the PROTO PHEV is a plug-in hybrid research prototype for large motorcycles that can switch between electric and hybrid operation. The show announcement does not provide enough comparable performance data for a quantitative comparison. Yamaha’s announcement describes both concepts.
