It was a development concept, not a production engine announced for sale. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) called it “the world’s first hydrogen-powered outboard for recreational boats”—a claim limited to that category and attributed to the NMMA, not a claim about every hydrogen marine engine.
What Yamaha unveiled in Miami
Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announced on December 7, 2023, that it planned to exhibit a prototype hydrogen-powered outboard at the Miami International Boat Show, held February 14–18, 2024. The display paired the prototype outboard and fuel system with a vessel. The NMMA described the exhibit as a prototype fuel system integrated into a boat. Its “world’s first” wording specifically referred to a hydrogen-powered outboard for recreational boats; it should not be expanded into a claim about all marine engines or read as evidence of a retail launch. Who worked on the prototype
- Roush: Yamaha says Roush helped develop the marine fuel system.
- Regulator Marine: Yamaha names the company as the boat-hull collaborator.

Why Yamaha is exploring hydrogen
Yamaha’s stated rationale is that marine propulsion faces challenges that differ from road transport: boats operate in water, where resistance increases the energy needed for propulsion, and they serve varied environments and uses, from rivers and lakes to ocean-going recreation and commercial fishing. In its December 2023 announcement, Yamaha said it was pursuing hydrogen alongside electrification and other new-energy technologies rather than presenting it as the sole solution.
That announcement also stated Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.’s corporate goal of carbon neutrality for Scope 3 emissions by 2050. This is a company target, not a measured emissions result for the hydrogen outboard. Yamaha’s December 2023 announcement.

What is—and is not—known about the engine
Yamaha’s December 2024 account said the concept was being tested at that time, and the 2025 catalog still described the H2 outboard as a prototype under refinement. The available accounts do not establish a production schedule or retail availability.
They also do not provide verified horsepower, range, tank capacity, test results, price, or a lifecycle-emissions assessment. Without those details, buyers cannot compare the prototype’s performance, operating costs, fuel logistics, or total climate impact with a conventional outboard or an electric system.
