The Yamaha YZF-R9 is an 890cc liquid-cooled inline-three supersport. Yamaha’s published U.S. starting MSRP for the 2025 model is $12,499, before tax, title, preparation and destination charges. Whether that makes it “affordable” depends on where you live, what you add to the price, and which bike you compare it with. On list price, it sits between Yamaha’s R7 and R1 in the U.S. lineup, and its equipment list is more complete than the price alone suggests.
What the R9 is
The R9 is Yamaha’s middleweight-class supersport built around a three-cylinder engine, a Deltabox frame and an electronic rider-aid package. Yamaha describes it as a machine for both track days and everyday riding. That is the manufacturer’s positioning. Independent road or track testing that would confirm how well it performs in either setting is not part of the evidence behind this article.

Rider aids
Yamaha describes an IMU-based suite that includes traction control, slide control, lift control and brake control. Yamaha presents these as a complete rider-aid package. Whether they work better than systems on competing bikes is not established by the manufacturer’s material, and this article does not make that claim.
Accessories
Yamaha lists R9-specific accessories, including frame sliders (featured as an option), a tank pad and a radiator guard. Yamaha’s listings do not confirm third-party stock or model-year fitment, so check compatibility with your exact year before ordering any part.
What it costs
U.S. pricing
Yamaha announced the 2025 R9 on October 9, 2024, with dealer arrivals beginning in March 2025 at a $12,499 MSRP. Yamaha’s current U.S. model page for the 2025 bike still lists $12,499 as the starting MSRP and shows a $625 destination charge. Yamaha states that actual prices are set by dealers and that MSRP excludes tax, title, preparation and destination. The $12,499 figure is therefore a starting point, not an out-the-door price. This article does not have a confirmed U.S. MSRP for the 2026 model.

Yamaha states that these prices include GST and ride-away costs. They are Australian prices and should not be converted into U.S. dollars and compared directly with the U.S. MSRP without accounting for exchange rates, tax treatment and included charges.

Yamaha’s 2025 Supersport listing shows the following U.S. starting MSRPs. These are list prices only and do not reflect dealer pricing, fees or equipment differences.
| Model (2025, U.S. starting MSRP) | MSRP | Difference from R9 |
|---|---|---|
| YZF-R3 | $5,499 | $7,000 less |
| YZF-R7 | $9,399 | $3,100 less |
| YZF-R9 | $12,499 | Reference point |
| YZF-R1 | $19,199 | $6,700 more |
Is “affordable” a fair description?
The R9 is affordable relative to the R1 on list price, and it costs $3,100 more than the R7. That is the extent of what the price data shows. Calling it a bargain would require a value comparison that Yamaha’s listings cannot provide.

To judge the price fairly, compare bikes on the same basis:
- Model year. Compare 2025 with 2025 and 2026 with 2026, since Yamaha’s published U.S. starting price is for 2025.
- Country. Compare U.S. MSRP with U.S. MSRP, and Australian ride-away with Australian ride-away.
- Charges included. MSRP excludes tax, title, preparation and destination. Ask the dealer for an itemized out-the-door quote, and add the $625 destination charge Yamaha lists for the U.S. 2025 model.
- Equipment. Compare engine configuration, adjustable suspension, brake hardware, tires and rider-aid features, not price alone.
- Intended use. A buyer who mainly rides on the street has different priorities from one who plans regular track days.
Yamaha’s own description of the R9 is a useful starting point for that last comparison. In its U.S. launch announcement of October 9, 2024, Yamaha said:
Recommended Free Tools
“The new 2025 YZF-R9 was conceived to redefine the Supersport class by combining track-capable performance with street bike accessibility through a broad, smooth power delivery, light handling, street-friendly ergonomics and a complete package of advanced rider aids—a machine as equally at home on a race circuit in the hands of a seasoned track rider as it is exploring canyon roads or urban streets in the hands of a dedicated street rider.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unanswered
Yamaha’s published material and the other official pages reviewed for this article do not establish independent results for acceleration, lap times, real-world fuel economy, comfort on long rides, reliability, insurance costs or resale value. Those are the factors that most affect whether a bike is affordable over several years of ownership, so check them with owners, independent test publications and insurers before deciding.
Availability is another open question. Online forum posts ask whether these bikes are hard to find, but anecdotal posts do not show a wider trend. Check current dealer inventory in your area.

A buying checklist
- Confirm the model year you are considering, and use the matching U.S. or Australian price.
- Request an itemized out-the-door quote from your dealer that shows tax, title, preparation and destination charges.
- Compare the quote with the R7 or R1 on the same basis, including equipment.
- Ask whether the bike has the adjustable suspension and rider-aid package described above.
- If you plan to buy accessories such as frame sliders, a tank pad or a radiator guard, confirm they fit your exact model year before purchase.
- Check local insurance quotes and independent reviews covering the performance and comfort points listed above.
Bottom line on the R9’s value
The R9 offers a well-specified chassis, adjustable suspension, ABS, and a published rider-aid suite at a U.S. starting MSRP of $12,499 for the 2025 model. Measured against the R1, it is clearly the less expensive machine. Measured against the R7, it costs $3,100 more. Whether it is the better value for you depends on the out-the-door price in your market and on how you plan to ride it.
Yamaha publishes its specifications and prices. Independent evidence on how the R9 rides, how it performs on track and what it costs to own over time is still needed before “affordable” becomes a verdict rather than a marketing word.
