Contemporary coverage does not establish whether it reached regular retail sale, and current availability, support, and app compatibility remain unconfirmed. It is best understood today as an intriguing 2016–17 product announcement, not a proven or readily recommendable drone.
What was the YI Erida?
YI Technology introduced the Erida in 2016 as a consumer camera drone with three rotors rather than the four used by many familiar consumer quadcopters. The company emphasized a lightweight carbon-fiber frame and speed. In a 2016 interview, YI president and co-founder Ye Song said, “The main differences are flight time and speed.” The project was reported as involving Atlas Dynamics, an engineering company whose founders were interviewed alongside YI’s representative (The Drone Girl, September 2016; DRONELIFE, September 2016).
How fast and how long was it supposed to fly?
YI’s announcement-era claims were up to 40 minutes of flight time and a top speed of up to 75 mph (about 120 km/h). CES 2017 coverage repeated the 40-minute and roughly 120 km/h figures. These were advertised specifications; the cited coverage does not provide independent flight-test results establishing that a production Erida achieved them (The Drone Girl, 2016; Les Numériques, January 2017).
Song also called it “the fastest tricopter in the world.” That is a claim by a YI executive, not a verified comparative finding. The sources do not establish a measured speed under stated test conditions, so the number should not be treated as a demonstrated real-world result.

Did it include a camera, and how was it controlled?
Contemporary reports paired the Erida with YI’s 4K action camera. CES coverage described 4K UHD recording at 30 frames per second. DRONELIFE reported that the camera and gimbal could be detached, while a December 2016 review-style article described smartphone control through a YI app rather than a dedicated controller (Les Numériques, January 2017; DRONELIFE, September 2016; The Tech Hacker, December 2016).
Those reports describe the proposed package and control approach, not verified compatibility today. They do not establish whether the app still works, whether batteries or spare parts can be obtained, or whether current YI cameras fit and function with an Erida.

Did the YI Erida ever go on sale?
The available contemporary reporting leaves the launch outcome unresolved. In September 2016, DRONELIFE said price and availability had yet to be announced. At CES in January 2017, Les Numériques cautioned that the promised specifications still needed verification and that the drone might never reach store shelves. A December 2016 article used an expected price of about US$1,100 and near-term availability language, but it does not document a purchase, shipment, or hands-on flight test (DRONELIFE, September 2016; Les Numériques, January 2017; The Tech Hacker, December 2016).
Accordingly, the period price is only an estimate, not an established final retail price. The cited material also does not establish current stock, manufacturer support, or a dependable source for parts. A surviving listing or used unit would need to be checked individually for what is included, condition, seller, and whether the aircraft and its app can actually be operated.

Is YI the same company as Xiaomi?
Not according to YI’s French spokesperson as quoted by Frandroid in January 2017. The spokesperson described YI Technology as an independent brand, while noting that Xiaomi distributed YI in China and had been one of its early investors. That is a statement about the relationship at that time, not a current corporate ownership check (Frandroid, January 2017).

The Erida’s concept was distinctive: a three-rotor carbon-fiber frame, a detachable camera-and-gimbal arrangement, and ambitious speed and endurance claims. But the cited material does not verify those performance claims in testing or resolve whether the product became a regularly available, supported retail drone. Without confirmed aircraft condition, working control software, compatible camera equipment, and a source for essential parts, an old listing is not enough to make it a sound purchase recommendation.

For a comparison with another drone, the useful questions are not just advertised top speed and flight time. Look for flight-time measurements with stated test conditions, camera resolution and stabilization, control method, safety features, weight, battery and service availability, and actual selling price. The Erida’s published figures belong in the claims column unless independently verified.
