Buy the Yamaha R15 V4 if you want the fuller technology and chassis package; choose the R15S if a unibody seat, simpler specification and lower purchase price matter more. Both use Yamaha’s 155 cc liquid-cooled engine and publish the same 13.5 kW (18.4 PS) and 14.2 Nm figures, so the decision is about equipment, riding position, passenger use, price and availability—not a claimed engine-performance advantage.
The latest reported Delhi ex-showroom prices were ₹1.57 lakh for the R15S and ₹1.71–1.76 lakh for R15 V4 variants on 6 May 2026. Those are dated benchmarks, not live on-road quotations. Your city, selected trim, taxes, registration, insurance and later price changes can materially alter the gap.

What is the same on both motorcycles?

Yamaha’s 2025 brochure lists the same 155 cc, liquid-cooled, single-overhead-camshaft, four-valve engine for both models. Its stated output is 13.5 kW, equivalent to 18.4 PS, at 10,000 rpm, with 14.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm. Both use a six-speed transmission.

Because those headline engine figures are shared, they are not evidence that an R15 V4 will accelerate faster than an R15S. Actual performance can be affected by variant equipment, mass, gearing details, tyres, rider weight, running-in condition and test conditions, but no independent comparative acceleration result is established here.
Same basic use case
Both are compact, fully faired 155 cc motorcycles aimed at riders who want a sporty Yamaha rather than a relaxed commuter. The common engine specification means your choice should begin with how you will use the bike and which equipment you value, not with an assumption that the V4 has a stronger engine.
Where the R15 V4 earns its premium
Traction control and riding modes
Yamaha’s R15 V4 product information lists traction control and Street/Track riding modes. These are the most significant electronic distinctions in the comparison. They give the V4 a broader feature package for riders who want a more configurable, sport-focused motorcycle.

Y-Connect smartphone connectivity
The V4 page also lists Y-Connect smartphone connectivity. The cited material establishes that connectivity is part of the package, but it does not define every current app function, phone requirement or display feature. Confirm compatibility with your phone and the exact instrument cluster on the motorcycle you are being shown.

USD front fork
The R15 V4 uses a USD front fork in Yamaha’s listed equipment. Autocar India’s 6 May 2026 report contrasts this with the R15S’s telescopic fork and describes the R15S as essentially based on the previous-generation V3 with revised styling. A USD fork can be a meaningful part of the V4’s sport-oriented chassis specification, but the fork type alone is not a guarantee of better comfort or faster lap times on public roads.
Dual-channel ABS
Yamaha lists dual-channel ABS for the R15 V4. The available R15S information does not establish a complete, current braking-equipment specification for every market trim. Ask the dealer to show the exact variant’s front and rear ABS arrangement before paying a booking amount, especially if safety equipment is a deciding factor.
Upshift quickshifter is trim-dependent
Do not assume every R15 V4 includes a quickshifter. Yamaha describes the upshift quickshifter as available on certain variants and colours. Ask for the exact model code, colour and equipment list on the quotation. If the feature is important to you, have the dealer confirm that it is factory-fitted rather than an accessory or an assumption based on another V4 version.
Why the R15S can be the smarter buy
Unibody seat and passenger priority
Yamaha markets the R15S around an unibody seat intended for both rider and pillion. Its product page uses the phrase, “Yamaha’s racing DNA now comes with the comfort of the Unibody Seat.” That is manufacturer product language, not an independent comfort test, so the practical question is whether your passenger can sit securely and whether the seat shape suits both of you.
Seat comfort is highly personal. A rider with a shorter inseam, a frequent passenger or someone who dislikes a pronounced split between rider and pillion may prefer the R15S. Another rider may find the V4’s sport-seat layout gives better support while leaning forward. Sit on both motorcycles with your usual riding position before deciding.

Lower reported entry price
Autocar India reported a Delhi ex-showroom price of ₹1.57 lakh for the R15S on 6 May 2026. The same report placed R15 V4 variants at ₹1.71–1.76 lakh after a ₹4,900 increase across the range. On that dated comparison, the R15S required less upfront ex-showroom spending.

The difference is not a universal saving. Ex-showroom prices vary by city and can change without notice; on-road totals add registration, road tax, insurance, handling or other permitted charges. Obtain written quotations for both motorcycles in the same city and on the same date before comparing the gap.
Simpler specification can be a benefit
If you will not use riding modes, smartphone connectivity or a quickshifter, paying for those features may not improve your daily experience. The R15S can make more sense when your priorities are the shared engine, a unibody seat and the lowest verified purchase price among the two.
Riding position, suspension and everyday comfort
The V4’s committed posture
Autocar’s R15 V4 coverage describes its clip-on riding position as committed and not ideal for long highway stints. That does not mean every rider will find it uncomfortable, but it is a warning for anyone whose routine includes extended motorway travel, stop-and-go traffic or wrist and back sensitivity.
During a test sit, check whether your wrists carry weight, whether your knees fit naturally around the tank and whether you can turn the bars at walking pace without feeling cramped. Repeat the check in the footwear and riding gear you normally use. A short showroom sit cannot reproduce a two-hour ride, so take the posture warning seriously if touring is a major use case.

Do not infer comfort from fork type alone
The V4’s USD fork and the R15S’s reported telescopic fork are clear hardware differences, but comfort depends on spring and damping setup, tyre pressures, road surfaces, rider mass and passenger load. There is no sourced independent comfort score comparing the two. Use a controlled ride on your usual roads, if the dealer permits it, rather than treating a component label as a verdict.
Mileage expectations
Autocar’s R15 V4 page reports an ARAI-certified 51.4 kmpl figure and also discusses its own real-world estimates. ARAI certification is a standardized test result, not a promise for your commute. Traffic, speed, payload, maintenance, tyre pressure and riding style can all change consumption. No equivalent independent side-by-side mileage test is established here, so do not choose the R15S on an assumed fuel-economy advantage.
Which motorcycle fits your priorities?
Choose the R15 V4 when equipment matters most
- You specifically want traction control, Street/Track modes, Y-Connect and the USD fork.
- Dual-channel ABS is a required part of your purchase decision and is confirmed on the exact V4 trim.
- You are willing to pay the local on-road premium for the feature package.
- You enjoy a committed sport posture and have tested it for your normal rides.
- You have verified that the particular colour and variant includes the upshift quickshifter, if that feature is important.
Choose the R15S when value and seating come first
- You want the lowest verified ex-showroom and on-road quote between the two.
- A unibody seat is more useful to you or your regular pillion than the V4’s electronics.
- You do not need the V4-specific modes, connectivity or USD fork.
- You prefer to spend the difference on protective riding gear, training or a larger maintenance reserve rather than factory features.
- The R15S is the model actually available in your city while the desired V4 trim is out of stock.
Reconsider both if your main use is relaxed touring
If your priority is an upright posture, easy low-speed manoeuvring and frequent long-distance comfort, the V4’s committed ergonomics deserve careful scrutiny. The R15S’s unibody seat may improve passenger practicality, but the available specifications do not establish that it transforms the motorcycle into a relaxed tourer. Test both and compare them with motorcycles designed around your preferred posture before committing.
How to compare the real purchase cost
- Select the same city and date. Ask for written quotations for the R15S and the exact R15 V4 variant in your registration location.
- Separate ex-showroom from on-road. Request individual lines for vehicle price, road tax, registration, insurance and any optional accessories or services. Do not compare a Delhi ex-showroom report with a local on-road number.
- Confirm the variant and colour. Record the model name, colour and model year. This is essential for checking whether the quickshifter is included on the V4.
- Check stock before booking. Yamaha’s online shop asks shoppers to select a dealership and indicates that stock may be unavailable in a selected state or city. Have the dealer confirm the motorcycle is physically allocated or provide a realistic arrival date.
- Verify the final invoice. Yamaha states in its brochure that specifications and features may change without notice. Match the delivered motorcycle’s equipment with the signed quotation and inspect the VIN, manufacturing date and included documents.

Seat and controls
- Sit on each motorcycle for several minutes, not just long enough to reach the handlebars.
- Ask your regular passenger to sit on the R15S unibody seat and on the V4, if the showroom permits.
- Check reach to the ground, clutch effort, steering lock and whether your wrists feel loaded.
- Look for the passenger foot-peg position and whether your passenger has a secure handhold.
Equipment confirmation

- Inspect fairing panels, levers, bar ends, wheels and fork tubes for transport damage.

The quickshifter is explicitly variant- and colour-dependent. A showroom poster or online image may represent a different trim. Use the written equipment list and motorcycle identification number tied to your booking.

Calling the R15S more comfortable without trying it
Yamaha’s unibody-seat claim describes the intended design. It does not prove that every rider or pillion will prefer it. Seat width, foam, reach and passenger posture should be judged in person.
Choosing on engine numbers alone
The published power, torque and gearbox figures are shared. They cannot by themselves justify a claim that one model is faster. If performance is your deciding factor, arrange a legal, safe test ride and evaluate the complete motorcycle rather than relying on a specification-sheet assumption.
Ignoring availability
