Short answer: Baidu’s Apollo Go is the more mature service on the figures publicly disclosed through October 13, 2026: Baidu reports millions of fully driverless rides, operations across a 27-city global footprint, and fully driverless zones in Dubai. XPENG’s Robotaxi, now branded XPENG YOYO, is at an earlier, staged-access point. XPENG opened invitation-code registration in China on October 8, but that does not establish unrestricted commercial rides.
The two programs are therefore not yet a like-for-like consumer choice. Apollo Go has disclosed operating volume and geographic reach; XPENG has disclosed a mass-produced vehicle, Guangzhou testing qualifications, a technology architecture and a planned pilot. Neither source set supplies an independent head-to-head safety study, a common fare comparison or a standardized rider-experience benchmark.

What the comparison actually shows
“XPENG Robotaxi” refers to the program now called XPENG YOYO. “Baidu Apollo Go” refers to Baidu’s autonomous ride service. Both are designed for driverless or highly automated trips in defined operating areas, but the evidence places them at different deployment stages.

Baidu’s disclosures are mainly operating scale: rides, autonomous kilometres, cities and Dubai service zones. Comparing those categories without separating them can make a pilot look like a live taxi network or make a company-reported fleet total look like an independent safety result.

The fairest conclusion is narrow: Apollo Go leads on disclosed operational scale and current geographic reach; XPENG YOYO is an emerging Guangzhou-centered program whose public access is still controlled. That conclusion does not establish that one vehicle is safer, cheaper, faster or more comfortable.
XPENG YOYO: current status and rider access
From Guangzhou production to staged access
On May 18, 2026, XPENG announced that its first mass-produced Robotaxi had rolled off the production line in Guangzhou. The vehicle is built on XPENG’s in-house GX platform and was engineered to L4 standards, according to the company. XPENG also reported that it had received a Guangzhou road-testing permit in January 2026 for routine L4 public-road testing and created a Robotaxi business unit in March.
Those milestones show that a production-intent vehicle and a permitted test program exist. They do not, by themselves, mean that anyone can hail the vehicle as an ordinary taxi.

What changed in July, August and October
XPENG said the vehicle completed the full chain from online ride request to automated pickup and drop-off in July 2026. In August, it reported receiving Guangzhou qualification for remote testing without a safety operator in the driver’s seat on specified Class I, II and III test roads. “Remote testing” and a qualification covering named test roads remain narrower than unrestricted citywide service.
On October 8, XPENG announced the YOYO name and opened online registration in China through invitation codes. Registration is evidence that XPENG is beginning to organize access; it is not evidence that every applicant can book a regular ride, that rides are available in every Chinese city, or that a normal taxi tariff has been published.
The earlier internal fare
XPENG also said it had previously run paid internal testing at RMB 1 per ride to validate payment and service workflow. That was an internal test price, not a public consumer fare. It should not be used to estimate what a future YOYO trip will cost.
Planned pilot and unsupervised operation
In its May announcement, XPENG described a pilot for the second half of 2026 to test technical viability, user acceptance and the business model. It also targeted fully autonomous operations without an on-site safety officer by early 2027. These are company plans and targets, not proof that the milestones had already been achieved or that the dates apply in every operating area.

Baidu Apollo Go: disclosed operating scale
Rides and kilometres
Baidu’s Q1 2026 earnings release reported 3.2 million fully driverless operational rides in the first quarter. The company said weekly rides peaked above 350,000 in March. It also reported more than 22 million cumulative public rides as of April 2026.
For distance, Baidu reported more than 330 million autonomous kilometres, including more than 220 million fully driverless kilometres. These are Baidu’s figures and definitions. They are useful indicators of the activity Baidu says its network has accumulated, but they are not an independently harmonized comparison with XPENG’s testing distance.
Geographic footprint
Baidu reported a 27-city global footprint as of May 2026. “Global footprint” should not be read as 27 cities offering identical, unrestricted service. Autonomous rides can differ by road, zone, operating hours, vehicle availability, booking channel and local approval.
Dubai availability
Baidu said fully driverless operations were running in multiple Dubai zones and that the Apollo Go app launched there in March 2026. That is a more concrete rider-access signal than a future expansion announcement, but it remains location-specific. A rider needs to check whether the requested pickup and destination fall inside an active Apollo Go zone at the time of booking.

What XPENG has disclosed about the vehicle
Pure vision, without LiDAR or high-definition maps
XPENG says the Robotaxi uses a pure-vision approach and operates without LiDAR or high-definition maps. That is a company disclosure, not an independently verified performance finding. It describes the sensors and mapping approach XPENG says it selected; it does not prove that the approach is better or worse for riders than another company’s architecture.
VLA 2.0 and onboard computing
The vehicle uses XPENG’s VLA 2.0 model and four self-developed Turing AI chips, according to the May 2026 announcement. XPENG has also cited a claimed onboard-compute figure of 3,000 TOPS. TOPS is a processing-capacity specification, not a direct measure of safe miles, intervention rate or ride comfort.
Response latency
XPENG claimed system response latency below 80 milliseconds. The figure is a vendor claim, and the cited material does not define a common test protocol or compare it with Apollo Go. It should be read as a stated engineering target or measurement from XPENG, not as a cross-service benchmark.

What is not disclosed on the same basis
The cited Baidu Q1 2026 operating release gives ride, kilometre and footprint figures but no matched sensor, compute or model specification that can be placed beside XPENG’s claims. That absence does not establish that Apollo Go lacks those technologies; it means the selected release does not provide comparable details.

How to interpret the different kinds of “availability”
Autonomous ride programs use several milestones that are easy to confuse. Treat each as a separate status:
- Road-testing permit: permission to test on public roads under specified rules. XPENG reported a Guangzhou permit in January 2026.
- Remote-testing qualification: permission for a particular test arrangement and named roads. XPENG reported this qualification in August 2026.
- Internal paid testing: a controlled workflow exercise. XPENG’s RMB 1 rides fit this category.
- Invitation registration: a way to collect or screen prospective users. XPENG reported this step on October 8, 2026.
- Pilot operation: a limited deployment intended to validate technology, acceptance or economics. XPENG described a second-half-2026 pilot as a plan.
- Regular commercial rides: a rider can normally request trips in an operating zone under a published service and fare framework. The cited XPENG announcements do not establish this broad status.
A company can move through these stages at different speeds in different cities. A registration page should therefore not be interpreted as a promise of immediate booking, and a permitted test should not be interpreted as a citywide taxi service.
Other autonomous ride services and partnerships
Waymo and planned UK trials
The Associated Press reported in December 2025 that Waymo planned to participate in UK trials. The same report described separate London robotaxi plans involving Apollo Go with Uber and Lyft. Those reports establish announced trial or partnership intentions at that time, not current open service for every London resident.
Apollo Go distribution through other apps
Uber’s February 2026 announcement described a planned Apollo Go deployment through Uber’s app in selected Jumeirah locations, subject to approvals and operational learning. A planned booking channel is not the same as a completed rollout. The relevant questions are whether approval was obtained, whether vehicles are operating on the requested date, which roads are covered and whether the trip can actually be booked.

Why city-level detail matters
“Available in London,” “available in Dubai” or “available in 27 cities” can conceal major differences in coverage. Autonomous services are constrained by approved roads, mapped or validated operating areas, weather and operating policies, fleet supply and local rules. Compare the exact pickup zone and booking channel rather than relying on a company-wide headline.

Ride counts
A ride count indicates how many trips a company says it completed under its definition of an operational or public ride. Baidu’s 3.2 million fully driverless rides in Q1 2026 and more than 22 million cumulative public rides by April are substantial scale indicators. They do not, without a shared methodology, tell you how XPENG would perform under the same conditions.

Autonomous kilometres
Baidu’s 330-million-kilometre total includes more than 220 million fully driverless kilometres. The distinction matters: “autonomous kilometres” and “fully driverless kilometres” are not interchangeable labels. A reader should not combine them or compare them with a different company’s test mileage unless both companies define the measurement in the same way.
Safety claims
Baidu describes its safety record as outstanding, but the cited release does not provide an independent, comparable safety rate. XPENG’s cited announcements likewise do not provide a cross-service safety statistic. Without common exposure data, incident definitions, traffic environments and independent verification, the available figures cannot support a claim that either service is safer.
How to check whether you can actually book a ride
- Identify the city and zone. Start with the exact pickup address and destination. A national registration announcement does not establish service in every city.
- Use the named booking channel. For XPENG, the October 2026 announcement describes invitation-code registration in China. For Apollo Go in Dubai, Baidu says the Apollo Go app launched in March 2026. A planned partner channel may not yet be active.
- Check eligibility and invitation requirements. Registration can be limited by invitation, account status, geography or testing rules. Do not assume that submitting a form creates a ride entitlement.
- Look for a live pickup estimate. A real operating service should show whether the requested road is covered, whether a vehicle is available and what conditions apply. If the app only collects registration details, treat it as an access-request stage.
- Read the ride and safety instructions. Follow pickup-zone, seat-belt, remote-assistance and cancellation instructions shown in the active service interface. Those operational details can vary by city and pilot.
- Record the date and location. Autonomous programs change quickly. A booking result from one Dubai zone or one Guangzhou test road should not be generalized to another location.
Business models behind the services
XPENG’s stated model
XPENG CEO He Xiaopeng described the Robotaxi strategy as technology provision and ecosystem enablement. The company said revenue would come from hardware sales, services and commission sharing, while offline operations would be entrusted to partners. XPENG named Amap as its first global ecosystem partner.
This explains why XPENG’s program may not look like a conventional taxi company. XPENG can supply vehicles and technology while partners handle local operations. The statement is a company strategy description, not proof that a particular partner-operated service is live in every market.
Apollo Go’s operating and platform model
Apollo Go’s Dubai app launch and the announced Uber and Lyft plans show multiple possible distribution routes: a dedicated service app and access through established ride-hailing platforms. Each route still depends on local approvals, operating zones and actual fleet deployment.
Questions the available evidence cannot answer yet
- There is no common public fare table showing what an XPENG YOYO trip costs versus an Apollo Go trip.
- The cited material does not provide an independent head-to-head safety study.
- There is no standardized comparison of wait times, cancellation rates, accessibility, comfort or remote-assistance response.
- XPENG’s invitation-code registration does not reveal how many users will receive rides or how often vehicles will be available.
- Baidu’s 27-city figure does not specify identical service coverage, hours or ride eligibility in all 27 cities.
These are evidence limits, not evidence that the services lack those features. They are the reason a responsible comparison should stop at deployment stage, disclosed access, geography and company-reported scale.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line for riders and observers
If your question is which program has demonstrated the larger operating network, the answer is Baidu Apollo Go based on Baidu’s reported 2026 rides, kilometres, Dubai zones and 27-city footprint. If your question is whether you can freely hail an XPENG robotaxi today, the answer is more qualified: XPENG YOYO registration opened in China by invitation code on October 8, 2026, but the cited update does not establish unrestricted commercial availability.
XPENG is best understood as a mass-produced vehicle and staged pilot moving toward broader deployment, with a disclosed pure-vision architecture and partner-led operating strategy. Apollo Go is the stronger example of disclosed operational scale, while its city-by-city availability still has to be checked in the relevant app or zone. Waymo’s UK activity and Apollo Go’s planned platform partnerships belong in the “announced trials or expansion” category unless a current local booking proves otherwise.
