XPENG G9 vs. Tesla Model Y: Which Luxury Electric SUV Is Better for Families in Germany?

The Tesla Model Y wins on available seven-seat capacity; the five-seat XPENG G9 counters with a 660-litre trunk, comfort equipment and high quoted charging power. Compare exact German trims, luggage space and child-seat fit before buying.

Short answer: Choose the Tesla Model Y Premium AWD if you genuinely need seven seats. Choose the XPENG G9 for a five-person household that prioritizes a larger five-seat cabin, a 660-litre standard trunk, extensive comfort equipment and XPENG’s quoted high-power charging. Those are configuration-specific manufacturer specifications, not independent tests; the right choice still depends on current local pricing, warranty terms, route charging and a physical child-seat check.

This comparison uses Germany and the wider European market, where the current XPENG G9 configurator and Tesla Germany’s Model Y page provide the relevant specifications. Equipment, prices, seats and range vary by market, model year, battery, drivetrain and wheel choice. “Luxury” is used here as a description of equipment and positioning, not as a claim that both vehicles occupy the same price or size class everywhere.

Seats and usable family space

When seven seats are non-negotiable

The Tesla Model Y is the only candidate here with an officially listed third row in Germany: Tesla lists a seven-seat option for Premium AWD. XPENG presents the European G9 as a five-seat SUV. If your household regularly carries six or seven people, that distinction decides the comparison before range, trim or interior finishes enter the discussion. Confirm that the seven-seat configuration is orderable in your local Tesla account, because availability can change.

  • Hot Wheels Tesla Model Y, HW Green Speed 1/10 [Gray] 37/250

A third row also changes what you can carry. Tesla’s owner’s manual gives 370 litres behind the third row for the seven-seat Model Y and 486 litres of maximum cargo with seven occupants. Those are the numbers to use when every seat is occupied, not the much larger maximum volume quoted with seats folded. A stroller, school bags and holiday luggage can consume 370 litres quickly, so measure your own gear and test access to the rearmost seats.

Five-seat luggage: do not mix unlike measurements

XPENG’s European announcement states a 660-litre standard trunk and 1,576 litres with the rear seats folded. Tesla lists about 2,118–2,138 litres of maximum total cargo volume, depending on version and seating configuration. “Maximum” generally includes multiple compartments and folded seats, so it is not equivalent to XPENG’s standard-trunk figure or to the Tesla seven-seat space behind occupied rows. Compare the space available with your normal passenger count, then check floor height, opening width and the location of the parcel shelf.

The G9 also has 71 litres of front storage according to XPENG’s European announcement. That compartment can take charging cables or smaller wet items, leaving the rear load area available for everyday luggage. Tesla’s listed cargo and seat configurations provide substantial total volume, but the page does not establish an equivalent front-storage figure for every German Model Y version.

Dimensions and access

The G9’s larger exterior dimensions support its five-seat space claim, but a dimension advantage on paper does not guarantee easier child-seat loading. Check rear-door opening angles, the height of the sill, the reach to ISOFIX points and whether a rear-facing seat forces the front passenger forward. For the Model Y, inspect both the five-seat and seven-seat layouts: the third row affects entry, headroom and the usable floor behind it.

Range, batteries and energy use

AWD Performance 92.2 kWh 540 km 20.1 kWh/100 km 423 kW; 10–80% in 12 minutes; 11 kW AC; adaptive air suspension €72,600

These prices and displayed configurations were shown on the German configurator and are volatile. Recheck the live page before ordering. WLTP is a certification cycle: motorway speed, cold weather, heating, roof loads, passengers and towing can reduce the distance between charges. XPENG Germany configurator

Tesla Model Y versions in Germany

Version WLTP range Seats Consumption or cargo information listed Charging information
Standard rear-drive 525 km Five 14.0 kWh/100 km; 2,118 L total cargo Up to 175 kW Supercharger power
Premium rear-drive 603 km Five 2,138 L cargo Up to 257 km added in 15 minutes under Tesla’s stated constant-speed measurement convention
Premium AWD 622 km (five-seat specification) Five or available seven-seat configuration 2,138 L total cargo as a five-seat version Up to 267 km added in 15 minutes on Tesla’s stated basis

Tesla’s 603- and 622-km figures belong to particular Premium trims; they should not be treated as the range of every Model Y. Wheel selection, temperature, speed and the seven-seat configuration can alter consumption and practical range. Tesla’s 15-minute distance figures use the company’s stated constant-speed measurement convention, so they are not directly interchangeable with XPENG’s 10–80% time. Tesla Germany Model Y

How to compare range fairly

  1. Compare WLTP with WLTP, not XPENG’s European WLTP with a China-market CLTC number.
  2. Match drivetrain, battery, wheels, seats and model year.
  3. Use your winter motorway route and charging stops rather than the brochure maximum.
  4. Leave a reserve for traffic, heating, roof boxes and a trailer.

No source here provides a same-route independent efficiency test, so neither vehicle can be declared the real-world range winner.

Charging on family trips

XPENG’s quoted charging capability

The German G9 configurator lists up to 445 kW DC for the Standard Range and up to 525 kW for the Long Range; the Performance version is listed at 423 kW. XPENG claims 10–80% in 12 minutes for specified configurations. All three versions list 11 kW AC charging. The Long Range and Standard Range list 1,500 kg towing and 6 kW vehicle-to-load capability in the German specifications.

Peak power is not sustained power. The battery’s temperature and state of charge, the charger’s actual output and whether another vehicle shares the site determine the curve. A station capable of 525 kW is required to approach the headline, and the car may taper well below it as the battery fills.

Tesla’s quoted charging information

Tesla lists maximum Supercharger power of 175 kW for the Standard rear-drive Model Y and up to 250 kW for Premium versions. It also quotes up to 257 km added in 15 minutes for Premium RWD and 267 km for Premium AWD, measured under Tesla’s stated constant-speed convention. Those distance figures are not a promise that every family stop adds that many kilometres: weather, battery conditioning, charger availability and the starting state of charge matter.

For route planning, compare the chargers you will actually use. A lower peak rate at a convenient, reliable site can produce a shorter family stop than a higher headline rate that is unavailable, busy or off your route. The Tesla page highlights its charging ecosystem and in-car/app route functions; XPENG’s quoted charging time is strongest on compatible high-power equipment.

Cabin comfort and everyday equipment

What the G9 lists

XPENG’s European announcement lists heated, ventilated and massage front seats, reclining rear seats and the 71-litre front storage compartment. Those features make the G9’s paper case strongest for a family of five that spends long hours in the car. Rear-seat reclining can help on trips, but verify the angle with child seats installed: a restraint, tether or booster may limit the usable position.

What the Model Y emphasizes

Tesla’s Germany page highlights phone-key and app access, remote climate control, cargo configurations and its charging ecosystem. Remote pre-conditioning can be useful when children are waiting in winter or summer, while app access can simplify checking charge state between errands. These are published feature descriptions, not an independent assessment of interface quality, ride comfort or long-term reliability.

Comfort checks to perform in person

  • Install your rear-facing, forward-facing and booster seats in the positions you actually use.
  • Check that the front passenger retains acceptable legroom behind a rear-facing seat.
  • Try third-row access and buckle reach if considering the seven-seat Model Y.
  • Load the stroller, school bags and a week’s groceries without removing the parcel shelf.
  • Test visibility, charging-port access and the ease of cleaning rear-seat surfaces.

Child seats, safety and the evidence gap

The collected official material does not establish a directly comparable, current independent crash-test rating for the exact German versions. It would therefore be misleading to name a safety winner. Obtain the latest ratings from the relevant European testing body for the precise model and production year before making a safety decision.

Tesla’s European 2025-and-newer Model Y manual names a Britax Römer KIDFIX i-Size restraint with XP-PAD, SICT on the outboard side and SecureGuard for children 100–150 cm tall, subject to the manual’s stated equipment and installation conditions. That is a manual-specific example, not proof that the seat fits every position or that it is compatible with the G9. Bring your own restraints to both showrooms and follow each vehicle’s manual and local child-restraint law. Tesla European Model Y manual

Ask the dealer to demonstrate ISOFIX access, top-tether routing, belt geometry and airbag instructions. Check whether a third-row passenger can reach and release the belt independently, and whether luggage can be secured so it cannot enter the passenger compartment during hard braking.

Towing, charging at home and ownership information

The German G9 specifications list 1,500 kg towing for the Standard Range and Long Range versions; the Performance listing should be checked for the exact approved rating and equipment before ordering. Towing a trailer or carrying bikes increases consumption and reduces range, so plan charging stops with a larger reserve than the WLTP figure.

All listed G9 versions show 11 kW AC charging, useful where a three-phase home wallbox is available. Tesla’s page supplies trim-specific vehicle and battery coverage information: four years or 80,000 km for basic vehicle coverage, and eight years for the battery and drive unit, with the distance limit dependent on trim. XPENG’s matching German warranty terms were not established in the available material; obtain the written terms, exclusions, roadside assistance and service intervals for the exact vehicle.

Insurance premiums, registration taxes, service pricing, financing rates and electricity costs vary by driver, postcode, tariff and annual mileage. No reliable evidence here supports a total-cost-of-ownership winner. Request written, local quotes for both exact configurations rather than comparing a promotional web price with a different trim.

Which one suits your family?

Choose the Tesla Model Y when

  • You need six or seven seats and the Premium AWD seven-seat configuration is available locally.
  • Your normal trips depend on Tesla’s charging network and route-planning ecosystem.
  • A 603- or 622-km WLTP Premium listing matches your preferred drivetrain and budget.
  • You can accept the much smaller 370-litre space behind the third row when all seats are occupied.

Choose the XPENG G9 when

  • Your household has five or fewer occupants and a third row would add cost and complexity without regular use.
  • You value the stated 660-litre standard trunk, 71-litre front storage and reclining, heated, ventilated and massage-seat equipment.
  • The Long Range’s 585-km WLTP figure or the Standard Range’s lower entry price fits your route and budget.
  • You can routinely access compatible high-power chargers and have verified local service and warranty support.

Wait and investigate further when

  • You cannot confirm the seven-seat Tesla configuration, the G9’s local delivery specification or current prices.
  • Your decision depends on independent crash results, rear-seat comfort testing, reliability or lifetime cost.
  • Your child seats, stroller or trailer have not been physically tested in the exact vehicle.

A practical showroom and ordering checklist

  1. Save the exact build: record battery, drivetrain, wheels, seat count, options, price, delivery estimate and the date shown by each German configurator.
  2. Measure your family load: bring the stroller, booster seats, sports equipment and the largest suitcase you normally carry.
  3. Install every restraint: test ISOFIX, top tether, belt length, front-seat clearance and third-row access where relevant.
  4. Check the route: map a representative holiday journey, identify compatible high-power sites and allow for winter and motorway losses.
  5. Read the documents: obtain the current owner’s manual, warranty, roadside-assistance policy, service schedule and towing approval.
  6. Get written costs: compare the same contract length, mileage, insurance assumptions, home charging installation and electricity tariff.
  7. Confirm delivery specification: ask whether software, charging hardware, seat count, suspension and cargo accessories match the demonstration car.

Do not mix the China-market G9 with European figures

XPENG’s 2025 China page lists suggested national prices of ¥248,800, ¥258,800 and ¥278,800, CLTC ranges of 625, 725 and 680 km, cargo figures of 754–1,795 litres and up to 530 kW charging. Those prices, test-cycle results and configurations are for China and must not be substituted for the Germany WLTP figures above. XPENG China G9 2025 specifications

Verdict for families in Germany

The Tesla Model Y is the practical answer when a third row is a firm requirement, because Tesla lists a seven-seat Premium AWD configuration and XPENG’s European G9 specification is five-seat. The XPENG G9 is the more compelling five-seat luxury-oriented proposition on the published equipment and cargo figures: 660 litres of standard trunk space, 71 litres of front storage, reclining rear seats and extensively equipped front seats. Its quoted 10–80% time and up-to-525-kW peak also look impressive, but they depend on a compatible charger and conditions.

Neither conclusion is an independent road-test result. Before signing, match the exact trim and test cycle, inspect luggage space with every passenger aboard, install your own child seats, confirm current prices and warranty terms, and plan the charging stops you will actually use. Those checks, rather than a single brochure number, determine which SUV is better for your family.
