Short answer: these are not three versions of the same product. The Volkswagen ID.7’s enhanced Travel Assist is a driver-supervised Level 2 assistance system. Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT is a separate Level 3 conditional-automation system that operates only in specified circumstances, while Mercedes also offers Level 2 functions that require continuous supervision. XPENG’s European G6 and G9 use an updated intelligent-driving suite, but the name, approval and activation of functions such as NGP depend on the country, vehicle generation, software and options. XPENG’s Luxembourg site currently labels NGP “En attente de réglementation” (“awaiting regulation”), so its 2025 European announcement should not be read as proof that every NGP function is active throughout Europe.
The meaningful comparison is therefore task by task: what the system controls, when it may operate, what the driver must do throughout the drive, and whether the feature is legally and technically enabled for the particular car and country. The manufacturers’ descriptions establish intended functions, not a common independent test of safety, comfort, reliability or intervention rates.

What is actually being compared?
“Driver assistance” covers several different kinds of technology. A system may help maintain a set speed, keep a vehicle near the lane centre, or suggest and execute a motorway lane change after the driver signals. Those are assistance tasks: the driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and taking over. A conditional-automation system is a different category. In the Mercedes-Benz documentation, Level 3 DRIVE PILOT is separated from Level 2 features because the operating concept, permitted conditions and fallback process are different.

| Example | Category described by the manufacturer | Tasks explicitly described | Driver responsibility | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XPENG G6/G9, European models announced June 2025 | Updated intelligent-driving suite using XPENG ADAS and NGP terminology | Suite-level intelligent-driving functions; the June 2025 announcement does not provide a single Europe-wide list of active NGP functions | Must follow the legally permitted use and vehicle instructions; availability and supervision requirements depend on the enabled feature | XPENG Luxembourg’s live page marks NGP “En attente de réglementation”; do not generalize that status to every country or model |
| Volkswagen ID.7 enhanced Travel Assist | Driver-supervised assistance | Assisted longitudinal control and lateral/lane-centre guidance; conditional assisted motorway lane changes are described | Remain attentive, keep hands on the steering wheel for the described lane-change maneuver, signal the maneuver and be ready to override; the driver remains responsible | Volkswagen’s operating-principle page is dated 13 November 2023 and says operation is within system limits |
| Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT | Level 3 conditional automation in the cited guide | Automated driving under limited conditions, distinct from Mercedes-Benz Level 2 assistance features | Level 2 functions require active, alert supervision; Level 3 DRIVE PILOT has its own limited-condition and handover framework | The guide is dated 6 March 2023 and does not settle current national availability or eligibility |
None of these descriptions supplies comparable outcome statistics. There is no supported basis here for declaring one brand safer, smoother, more reliable or better at lane changes than the others.
XPENG G6 and G9: what the European announcement establishes
The announced hardware and software direction
In its 12 June 2025 European announcement for the new G6 and G9, XPENG said the vehicles would receive an upgraded intelligent-driving suite. The company also described its approach to developing ADAS and the in-car operating system in-house, alongside core vehicle systems. XPENG’s statement reads: “To enhance the customer experience, XPENG in-house develops its advanced driver assistance technology (ADAS) and intelligent in-car operating system, along with core vehicle systems such as powertrain and electrical/electronic architecture (EEA).” The announcement is available at XPENG’s European G6 and G9 announcement.
That is a description of the product strategy and the announced European models, not a promise that every intelligent-driving function is enabled in every country. The release does not provide a single, country-by-country activation table for NGP, nor does it establish a uniform operating domain across all European versions.

Why NGP’s name is not enough
XPENG uses NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) terminology in its European material, but a feature name does not by itself prove regulatory approval or operational availability. XPENG Luxembourg’s current website includes the phrase “En attente de réglementation” (“awaiting regulation”) in its NGP description. You can check the live market page at XPENG Luxembourg. That wording is a country-specific regulatory caveat. It should not be stretched into either of two unsupported conclusions: that NGP is available everywhere in Europe, or that it is unavailable everywhere.
What a buyer should verify on an XPENG
Ask for the exact configuration rather than accepting “NGP” as a blanket answer. The relevant variables are:
- Country in which the vehicle will be registered and operated.
- Exact model and model year: G6 and G9 equipment can differ by generation.
- Trim, sensor package and any software or option package included in the order.
- Functions currently activated by the delivered software, not merely shown in launch material.
- Whether a function is approved, awaiting regulation or restricted to a particular road type or operating condition.
- The driver-monitoring, takeover and misuse instructions in the vehicle manual for that market.
If a salesperson cannot identify the country approval, software version and activation status, treat the feature as unconfirmed. A future over-the-air update may change capability, but a buyer should not pay for an assumed function without written specification for the delivered car.
Volkswagen ID.7 enhanced Travel Assist
What Travel Assist controls
Volkswagen describes enhanced Travel Assist as combining assisted longitudinal control with lateral guidance and lane-centre support. In practical terms, the system can help regulate speed and distance while also helping keep the ID.7 positioned in its lane, subject to the system’s limits and the road conditions it can recognize. The official operating-principle description is on the Volkswagen Newsroom ID.7 assist-systems page, dated 13 November 2023.

This is assistance, not a transfer of driving responsibility. Volkswagen states: “Within the system limits: the driver must always be ready to override the assist system and is not released from the responsibility of driving the vehicle with due care and attention.” The qualification “within the system limits” matters: lane markings, traffic layout, weather, sensor visibility, speed, road works and the vehicle’s configuration can all affect whether the system can provide the expected support.

How the described motorway lane change works
The ID.7 description includes a conditional assisted motorway lane change. The maneuver is not presented as an unrestricted, driver-free action:
- Drive on a motorway where the feature is permitted and the system has identified a suitable situation within its limits.
- Check the road yourself. The driver remains responsible for deciding whether a lane change is safe.
- Operate the turn signal to request the intended lane change.
- Keep both hands on the steering wheel as described by Volkswagen and continue monitoring traffic.
- Be prepared to override or cancel the maneuver immediately if the situation changes.
The system may assist with the maneuver, but the driver’s signal and supervision remain part of the operating procedure. Do not interpret a successful assisted lane change as permission to look away, remove your hands or assume that the sensors have seen every vehicle, motorcycle or obstruction.
What the ID.7 description does not prove
The Volkswagen page does not provide a common-road test score against XPENG or Mercedes-Benz. It does not establish intervention rates, comfort rankings, collision avoidance performance or reliability over a defined mileage. It also does not mean every ID.7 in every market has identical equipment: model year, trim, software and optional systems can change the available functions.
Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT and the Level 2 distinction
Two categories under one manufacturer
Mercedes-Benz’s guide, dated 6 March 2023, explicitly separates continuously supervised Level 2 assistance from DRIVE PILOT. Level 2 features can support steering and speed control, but the driver must remain actively attentive. DRIVE PILOT is described as Level 3 conditional automation that operates only under limited conditions. The guide is available as a PDF at Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT: An Automated Driving System for the Highway.
That distinction is more important than the marketing label. A Level 2 system asks the driver to supervise continuously and be ready to intervene at any moment. A Level 3 system has a defined operating domain in which the automated system performs the driving task, together with a specified request for the human to resume control when the domain ends or the system can no longer continue. The driver must still understand the conditions and follow the vehicle’s instructions; Level 3 does not mean the car can operate on every road, in every weather condition or without a fallback process.
Limited-condition operation
Mercedes-Benz’s 6 March 2023 guide establishes the category and the need for defined conditions, but it is not a current country-by-country availability list. Approval, eligible vehicle versions, permitted roads, speed limits, weather restrictions and software status can change. Before relying on DRIVE PILOT, confirm all of the following for the specific vehicle and registration country:
- Whether DRIVE PILOT is approved and legally usable there.
- Which model year, trim and option package is eligible.
- The exact motorway or road conditions in which the system may be activated.
- What the vehicle displays when it requests a handover and how much response time is provided.
- What remains prohibited, such as using the system outside its operating domain or ignoring a takeover request.
Do not compare a Mercedes Level 3 operating domain with an ID.7 Travel Assist demonstration as though both were the same kind of product. One is a limited-condition automation category; the other is driver-supervised assistance.

How to compare these systems before buying
1. Identify the exact car, not just the brand
Write down the model, model year, trim, drive configuration, sensor or technology package and software version. “G6,” “ID.7” or “Mercedes-Benz” alone is not a sufficient specification for an assistance feature.

2. Check the registration country
Ask the manufacturer or dealer which functions are approved and active in the country where the vehicle will be registered. A feature shown on a global website may be awaiting regulation in one market, as the Luxembourg NGP wording illustrates.
3. Request the operating-domain description
Look for the roads, speeds, weather, lane markings and traffic situations in which the feature may be used. For DRIVE PILOT, confirm the eligible motorway and the conditions for activation. For Travel Assist, confirm the limits and the procedure for the assisted lane change. For XPENG, obtain the market-specific NGP/ADAS description rather than relying on a generic launch announcement.
4. Clarify the driver-monitoring and takeover rules
Ask what the vehicle detects, what warnings appear, how the driver cancels assistance and what happens after a takeover request. If the answer is “keep watching and be ready,” you are dealing with a supervised assistance feature even if the car can steer and accelerate on its own for periods of time.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. Separate included equipment from future promises
Have the order form identify the feature included at delivery. Treat an announced upgrade or planned software function as future capability unless the seller confirms activation for the specific vehicle and market. Regulatory approval can be as important as hardware.
6. Test the handover yourself
On a supervised demonstration, observe the warning timing, steering-wheel monitoring, cancellation method and behavior when lane markings disappear. Never deliberately create an unsafe situation to test a limit. The purpose is to learn the interface, not to measure safety performance.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Equating a system name with an automation level. NGP, Travel Assist and DRIVE PILOT are labels, not interchangeable technical categories.
- Calling every hands-on feature “self-driving.” Volkswagen’s own wording keeps the driver responsible and ready to override.
- Assuming a launch announcement equals approval. The XPENG Luxembourg page’s “awaiting regulation” wording shows why country-level confirmation matters.
- Using a Level 3 description to excuse inattention with Level 2. Mercedes-Benz distinguishes the two; Level 2 requires active, alert supervision.
- Comparing demonstrations as if they were tests. Manufacturer descriptions do not measure intervention rates, comfort, reliability or safety outcomes on a common route.
- Ignoring software and options. Two vehicles with the same badge may have different sensors, packages or enabled functions.
What this means for a European buyer
Choose according to the task you want and the responsibility you are willing to retain. If you want conventional assistance that helps with speed and lane position while you remain fully engaged, the ID.7 Travel Assist description is explicit about that role and about a driver-signalled motorway lane-change assist. If you are evaluating an XPENG G6 or G9, focus first on what is enabled in your country and on the delivered software; the June 2025 announcement alone cannot answer that. If your interest is conditional automation rather than ordinary assistance, DRIVE PILOT belongs in a different category, and its current national approval and operating domain must be verified for the exact vehicle.
The prudent comparison is therefore not “which brand is best?” It is “which documented function is available on this car, on these roads, under these rules, and what must I continue doing?” The manufacturers’ official descriptions support that decision framework, but not a universal performance winner.
