No—not as a normal American car purchase. As of August 12, 2026, Xiaomi says the SU7 is not for sale outside mainland China, and CEO Lei Jun says the company has no immediate plan to enter the U.S. market. The SU7 seen on a California road was reportedly a benchmarking or test vehicle, not proof of a retail launch.
Its Chinese starting price of RMB 219,900 looks like roughly a mid-$30,000 equivalent, but that is not a U.S. price. Import certification, a potential Registered Importer, a 150% conformity bond, a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, and connected-car regulations would make an unofficial route costly and uncertain.
The Xiaomi SU7 is not officially available to American buyers. As of August 12, 2026, Xiaomi’s own product announcement says the SU7 Series is “not for sale outside of Chinese Mainland,” and Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has said the company has no immediate plan to enter the U.S. market. A car photographed on a California highway does not change that: it may have been imported for benchmarking, research, or another limited purpose rather than retail sale.
That is why the SU7’s Chinese starting price—RMB 219,900 for the current Standard model—cannot be treated as a likely American sticker price. Converting renminbi to dollars leaves out shipping, certification, modifications, tariffs, distribution, warranty support, and the cost of building a U.S. sales and service network. For a normal U.S. buyer, there is currently no Xiaomi showroom, official order process, factory warranty, or straightforward legal route to purchase an SU7.

What is the Xiaomi SU7?
The SU7 is Xiaomi’s first electric car and a full-size, high-performance sedan designed to connect with the company’s larger technology ecosystem. Before unveiling the production car, Xiaomi presented five automotive technology areas in December 2023: electric motors, batteries, high-pressure die-casting, assisted-driving technology, and the smart cabin. The company’s broader pitch is often summarized as Human × Car × Home—a car that fits into the same connected-device ecosystem as Xiaomi phones, tablets, smart-home products, and other services. Xiaomi describes that technology strategy in its automotive technology overview.
That positioning matters to the affordability question. Xiaomi entered cars with substantial experience in consumer electronics, software, supply-chain management, and connected products. Its vertical integration and technology reuse can help explain why the Chinese-market car offers a long list of features at a price that looks aggressive beside many large electric sedans. It does not, however, establish what the vehicle would cost in the United States. The company has not published a U.S. price, and a currency conversion is not a landed-cost calculation.
China-market price and specifications
Xiaomi officially launched the current-generation SU7 in China in March 2026 in three versions: Standard, Pro, and Max. Xiaomi lists these starting prices:
| Version | China starting price | Claimed maximum CLTC range |
|---|---|---|
| SU7 Standard | RMB 219,900 | 720 km |
| SU7 Pro | RMB 249,900 | 902 km |
| SU7 Max | RMB 303,900 | 835 km |
The lineup remains approximately five meters long, two meters wide, and three meters between the axles. Xiaomi claims up to 3.08 seconds for 0–100 km/h and a 265 km/h top speed for the new-generation range. It also advertises 10–80% charging in as little as 12 minutes and says the specified high-voltage system can add as much as 670 km of CLTC range in 15 minutes. Those are Xiaomi’s published figures, not independent test results.
The range numbers require particular care for U.S. readers. CLTC is China’s test cycle, and its results should not be presented as equivalent to EPA range ratings. The 902-km Pro claim is therefore not a promise of a 902-km, or roughly 560-mile, EPA-rated American car. Real-world range would also vary with speed, weather, temperature, tires, payload, and charging conditions.
Xiaomi also claims a 2,200 MPa high-strength steel-and-aluminum body structure, nine standard airbags, a full battery-protection structure, and an ASIL-D-rated battery system with emergency power-cutoff capability. These should be described as manufacturer claims. They are not a substitute for U.S. crash-test results, federal certification, or an independent safety assessment of a U.S.-market version.
Why the SU7 looks inexpensive in China
At RMB 219,900, the current Standard model converts to roughly a mid-$30,000 equivalent depending on the exchange rate used. That comparison is useful for understanding the car’s Chinese-market positioning, but it is not a forecast of a U.S. MSRP.

An American version would need to absorb costs that do not appear in the Chinese sticker price:
- Ocean freight, insurance, port handling, and inland transportation.
- U.S. federal compliance engineering, testing, labeling, and documentation.
- Any required hardware or software modifications.
- Import duties and other customs costs.
- Dealer or direct-sales distribution, parts inventory, technician training, and warranty reserves.
- Customer support, connected-service infrastructure, and software localization.
- State-level registration and ownership requirements, which can vary independently of federal import rules.
The SU7 is also operating at a scale in China that Xiaomi has not replicated in America. Xiaomi reported 136,854 SU7-series deliveries during the first nine months after the 2024 launch and another 69,697 deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2024. By June 30, 2024, the company said it had opened 87 smart-EV sales centers in mainland China. That sales and service footprint helps make a China-market purchase materially different from asking an American importer to support a single gray-market sedan.
Xiaomi’s official U.S. sales position
The clearest answer comes from Xiaomi itself. In its March 2026 announcement of the new-generation car, the company states that the “Xiaomi SU7 Series is not for sale outside of Chinese Mainland.” That is stronger and more current than an internet listing, an import broker’s advertisement, or a social-media claim about a car being spotted in the United States. See Xiaomi’s current SU7 announcement for the company’s stated sales boundary, pricing, and specifications.
In February 2026, a Xiaomi vehicle was photographed on a U.S. highway. Lei Jun said Xiaomi had no immediate plans to enter the American market and suggested that the car was likely acquired by a U.S. peer or supplier for benchmarking. Reports have discussed broader overseas ambitions and a possible 2027 timeframe, but that is not a confirmed U.S. launch date. A company can study American competitors without selling cars to American consumers. The California sighting was covered by TechNode’s report on Xiaomi’s response.
Why importing one is difficult
There are two separate questions: whether Xiaomi chooses to sell the SU7 in the U.S., and whether an individual can bring a particular non-U.S.-certified car into the country. The first answer is currently no. The second is not an absolute impossibility, but the normal process is expensive, restrictive, and uncertain.

Under the rules explained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a vehicle less than 25 years old that was not originally manufactured and certified to comply with applicable U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards generally cannot be permanently imported unless NHTSA determines that the make, model, and model year are eligible for importation.
The research available for this article does not show a U.S. certification or an SU7 import-eligibility determination. That is more precise than saying NHTSA has definitively rejected the car. It means a buyer should not assume that any Chinese-market SU7 can simply be shipped to a U.S. port and registered.

Heat the tape with a heat gun for better bonding in cold weather. Avoid washing your car for 48 hours after installation.
For a nonconforming vehicle, the importer generally must use a NHTSA Registered Importer, or contract with one, to modify the car and bring it into compliance. NHTSA says the importer must also post a bond equal to 150% of the vehicle’s declared value to ensure that required modifications are completed within 120 days of entry. The bond is not the total cost of ownership, and it does not guarantee that a specific SU7 will be accepted or that the conversion will be commercially sensible.
Potential changes could involve safety equipment, lighting, labeling, instrumentation, crash protection, and other systems. The exact requirements depend on the vehicle and its compliance status; it would be irresponsible to promise that a particular SU7 can be converted without first obtaining a make-model-year-specific determination from the appropriate authorities and an importer willing to handle the car.

The familiar 25-year exemption is sometimes presented as a shortcut for importing unusual cars. It applies to vehicles that are at least 25 years old, measured from the vehicle’s manufacture date. A current-generation SU7 is nowhere near that threshold, so the exemption is not a practical route for a normal buyer.
NHTSA also lists narrow temporary-import and show-or-display pathways. Temporary importation by a non-U.S. resident is generally limited to one year, while show-or-display vehicles face restrictions that include a 2,500-mile annual limit. Research, demonstrations, investigations, training, and racing can have their own limited-purpose routes. Those provisions help explain how a SU7 might appear in the United States for testing or evaluation, but they are not ordinary consumer-sale channels.
The 100% Chinese-EV tariff makes the price problem worse
Even if compliance and distribution were solved, trade policy would make a conventional U.S. launch substantially more expensive. The U.S. Trade Representative announced in 2024 that the Section 301 tariff rate on Chinese electric vehicles would rise to 100%. That duty would sit alongside shipping, customs, compliance, distribution, taxes, and other landed-cost factors. It would substantially weaken the advantage suggested by the RMB 219,900 Chinese starting price.
The tariff should not be treated as proof that every possible temporary or individual import is legally barred. It is better understood as a major commercial obstacle: importing cars at scale for ordinary American retail would be much harder to price competitively, even before Xiaomi built a sales, parts, and warranty operation. The relevant USTR announcement explains the Section 301 action.

Connected-car rules add another layer of uncertainty
The SU7’s appeal is not limited to its motor and battery. Its smart cabin, telematics, phone integration, cellular connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and assisted-driving technology are central parts of the product. Those features matter because the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security finalized a rule addressing connected vehicles and certain vehicle connectivity systems and automated-driving-system technologies with a sufficient connection to China or Russia.

The rule covers technologies including telematics, Bluetooth, cellular, satellite, and Wi-Fi connectivity, along with specified automated-driving software. According to BIS’s announcement, software-related prohibitions begin for model year 2027, while hardware-related prohibitions begin for model year 2030—or January 1, 2029, for vehicles without a model year. Certain sales prohibitions involving manufacturers with a sufficient nexus to China also begin for model year 2027.
This does not justify claiming that the regulation automatically bans every SU7 import today. The exact application depends on the vehicle, technology, manufacturer relationship, model year, and transaction. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the SU7’s connected-vehicle architecture would face an additional U.S. regulatory review, and the evolving rules make a future Chinese-connected-car launch more complicated than simply shipping the China-market vehicle overseas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does a U.S. SU7 sighting actually mean?
A sighting can demonstrate that at least one vehicle reached the country. It cannot demonstrate that American consumers can buy one through Xiaomi. A car may be present for:
- Benchmarking by a competitor or supplier.
- Engineering research or testing.
- A demonstration, training, or investigation.
- Temporary importation by an eligible non-U.S. resident.
- A show-or-display purpose with strict use limits.
- Another limited-purpose import route.
Lei Jun’s explanation of the California vehicle points toward benchmarking, and NHTSA’s import guidance separately confirms that limited-purpose routes exist. The important distinction is between physical presence and commercial availability. The first can happen without the second.
Could Xiaomi eventually sell the SU7 in America?
Yes, theoretically—but nothing in the current evidence establishes a launch date or guarantees that the Chinese-market SU7 would be the model sold here. Xiaomi would need to make a strategic decision to enter the U.S., create or adapt a vehicle for American requirements, complete the relevant compliance work, address import and tariff economics, establish sales and service operations, supply parts, support warranties, and resolve the connected-vehicle regulatory questions.
A future U.S. model could also differ from the China-market car in its charging equipment, software, driver-assistance functions, communications hardware, safety calibration, warranty, and available trims. Even if Xiaomi announces an overseas expansion around 2027, that should not be read as a confirmed American launch until the company publishes a U.S. sales plan and the required regulatory and distribution details.
What can an American enthusiast buy now?
There is no ordinary way to buy a road-ready SU7 from Xiaomi in the United States today. An enthusiast who wants a physical reminder of the car rather than the car itself may find an official Xiaomi SU7 die-cast model car. It is a collectible, not a substitute vehicle and not evidence of U.S. automotive availability. Anyone pursuing an actual import should first obtain written, vehicle-specific advice from a qualified importer and verify eligibility before paying a seller, shipping company, or conversion shop.

For buyers who need an electric sedan they can purchase, register, charge, and warranty in America, the practical choice is to compare vehicles already offered through an established U.S. sales and service channel. The SU7 can still be a useful benchmark for technology, performance, packaging, and Chinese EV pricing—but it is not currently a realistic U.S. purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a Xiaomi SU7 in the United States?
No—not through a normal U.S. sales channel. Xiaomi’s March 2026 announcement says the SU7 Series is not for sale outside mainland China, and the company has no immediate U.S. entry plan. A private import would require case-specific eligibility and compliance work rather than a routine purchase.
Does seeing a Xiaomi SU7 on a U.S. road mean it is available here?
Not necessarily. A SU7 could enter the country for benchmarking, research, demonstration, temporary importation, or another limited purpose. Such a vehicle may be legally present without being approved for ordinary retail sale or supported by Xiaomi’s U.S. warranty network.
Is the Xiaomi SU7 really a $30,000-to-$35,000 U.S. electric car?
No. RMB 219,900 is the Chinese starting price for the current Standard model. It does not include U.S. shipping, compliance modifications, tariffs, distribution, taxes, warranty infrastructure, or other ownership costs, so it cannot be converted directly into a likely American MSRP.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Could Xiaomi eventually launch the SU7 in America?
Theoretically, a future U.S. launch is possible, but Xiaomi has not announced an immediate one. A compliant American version would require an official sales decision, federal compliance, distribution and service infrastructure, parts and warranty support, and a workable response to tariff and connected-vehicle rules.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Xiaomi SU7 is affordable only in the context of its Chinese-market price and Xiaomi’s China-focused technology and sales strategy. As of August 12, 2026, Xiaomi says the car is not for sale outside mainland China and has no immediate U.S. entry plan. A U.S. sighting does not equal retail availability, while certification requirements, the Registered Importer process, a 150% conformity bond, the 100% Chinese-EV tariff, and connected-vehicle rules make an unofficial import expensive and uncertain. The SU7 is not permanently ruled out for America, but it is not an ordinary American buying option today.
