Practice lap times do not determine the starting order. Tissot Superpole sets the Race 1 and Superpole Race grids, while the Sunday sprint decides the first nine positions for the Race 2 grid. The remaining Race 2 places come from the original Superpole order.
The 2026 standard template normally runs WorldSBK practice on Friday, final practice and qualifying on Saturday, then the sprint and second full race on Sunday. Exact times, support-category order and race distances are round-specific, so use the event timetable for the meeting you are following.

Friday: free practice is preparation, not qualifying
FP1 and FP2
The usual Friday arrangement has two 45-minute WorldSBK free-practice sessions. Teams use them to establish a baseline setup, compare tyre choices, check electronics and suspension settings, and let riders learn grip, bumps and wind at a new circuit. The second session often provides more representative conditions because it is later in the day, but it remains practice rather than a timed qualification.
The most important rule for spectators is simple: free-practice lap times do not set the grid. A rider can top Friday and still start outside the front row after Superpole; conversely, a rider who spends Friday working through problems can qualify near the front once the bike is prepared. Practice results are useful evidence of pace, but they are not starting positions.
Why Friday times can mislead
Track temperature, tyre allocation, fuel load and traffic vary between sessions. Teams may run a race-length simulation in one run and a short qualifying-style run in another. The timing screen therefore shows preparation choices as much as outright ranking. Use Friday to identify who is solving setup problems and who has consistent pace, not to infer the Race 1 grid.
Saturday morning: final practice and Tissot Superpole
FP3 and the duration discrepancy
The 2026 standard schedule lists WorldSBK FP3 as a 20-minute session from 09:40 to 10:00. The glossary describes a traditional WorldSBK pattern in which the Saturday practice session lasts 30 minutes. For a current 2026 meeting, the published season schedule and the individual round timetable take precedence: check those documents rather than treating the glossary duration as universal. Either way, FP3 is the last setup opportunity before qualifying and does not itself determine the grid.

How Tissot Superpole works
Tissot Superpole is the qualifying session, not a race. It is scheduled for 15 minutes in the standard 2026 template, from 11:15 to 11:30. Riders seek their fastest qualifying lap, and the resulting order is the starting order for Saturday’s Race 1 and Sunday’s Tissot Superpole Race.
Superpole also has a delayed effect on Sunday afternoon. The original qualifying order supplies Race 2 positions from 10th place backward through the rest of the field. That means one qualifying lap matters on Saturday, again for the Sunday-morning sprint start, and then still matters for the lower half of the Race 2 grid.
“Grid” means the starting order, with pole position as first place. When a timetable or results page lists a rider on pole, it is identifying the first starting position created by Superpole, not the fastest Friday practice time.
Saturday afternoon: Race 1
Race 1 is the first full WorldSBK contest and normally takes place after Superpole and the other classes’ Saturday races. The 2026 standard template places it at 15:30, but the circuit timetable controls the actual start. Distance is also venue-specific: a published number of laps for one circuit cannot be applied to another.

Race 1 is separate from the Superpole Race. It does not create the front nine places for Race 2; those are determined by Sunday’s sprint. Its result is nevertheless a complete championship race classification and an important part of the weekend’s points total.
Sunday morning: the Tissot Superpole Race
What the sprint is
The Tissot Superpole Race is a 10-lap sprint throughout the season. It is not a replacement for Race 1 or Race 2. The standard 2026 schedule places it at 11:10, after a 09:15–09:25 WorldSBK warm-up.
The sprint awards points to its top nine finishers in this order: 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. The points are separate from those available in either full race. A rider can therefore score in the sprint while also using the result to improve the starting position for Race 2.

How it changes the Race 2 grid
The finishing order of the Superpole Race sets Race 2 positions one through nine. The sprint winner starts Race 2 from pole, the runner-up starts second, and so on through ninth. Race 2 places from 10th onward retain the order established by Tissot Superpole. This is why the Sunday sprint has both sporting and strategic importance: it offers points, but its primary grid consequence is concentrated at the front of the final race.

Sunday afternoon: Race 2
Race 2 is the second full WorldSBK race and usually closes the WorldSBK action on Sunday after the support categories. In the standard 2026 timetable it is listed for 15:30. The field is assembled using two sources: the Superpole Race for the first nine slots and Saturday’s Tissot Superpole for 10th place onward.
Race 2 is not started from the Race 1 finishing order. A rider’s Saturday result may influence championship momentum, but it does not automatically place that rider on the front row Sunday afternoon. The sprint must be read first when checking the final grid.
Exactly how the grids are determined
| Event | Grid source | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Race 1 | Tissot Superpole qualifying order | Fastest qualifier starts on pole |
| Tissot Superpole Race | Tissot Superpole qualifying order | The sprint starts in the same order created on Saturday |
| Race 2, positions 1–9 | Tissot Superpole Race finishing order | The sprint result directly rearranges the front nine |
| Race 2, positions 10 onward | Original Tissot Superpole order | Qualifying remains decisive for the rest of the field |
This split explains common timing-screen confusion. A rider can qualify fifth, finish the sprint second and start Race 2 second; another rider who qualified 12th cannot move into the top nine through the sprint unless that rider’s sprint finish itself places them in one of those nine positions. The published rules establish the source of each grid segment, not a single combined qualifying result.
What changed in the 2026 standard schedule?
The 2026 template generally makes WorldSBK Race 1 the closing WorldSBK race on Saturday and Race 2 the closing WorldSBK race on Sunday, after the other categories’ races. The Sunday-morning Tissot Superpole Race remains in its established slot rather than moving to the end of the day. This arrangement is described in the official 2026 schedule announcement, whose page displays a January 13, 2026 publication date; its URL path references December 17, 2025, matching the date on the schedule PDF.

Do not treat the template as an inflexible timetable. The official schedule document says: “The schedule might be adjusted at certain rounds as per categories assignment.” Support classes, television windows, local regulations and circuit logistics can change the order or start time. The 2026 standard schedule includes WorldWCR, WorldSPB and WorldSSP sessions as well as WorldSBK; WorldSPB began in 2026, replacing WorldSSP300.
Estoril example: 9–11 October 2026
The Estoril round shows how the generic sequence appears on a real timetable. The official programme labels every time as local time, UTC+1. It is an example of one event, not a season-wide rule.
| Date | Session | Time | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday, 9 October | FP1 | 10:20–11:05 | Practice session |
| Friday, 9 October | FP2 | 15:00–15:45 | Practice session |
| Saturday, 10 October | FP3 | 09:40–10:00 | Practice session |
| Saturday, 10 October | Tissot Superpole | 11:15–11:30 | Qualifying |
| Saturday, 10 October | Race 1 | 15:30 | 21 laps |
| Sunday, 11 October | Warm-up | 09:15–09:25 | Practice check |
| Sunday, 11 October | Tissot Superpole Race | 11:10 | 10 laps |
| Sunday, 11 October | Race 2 | 15:30 | 21 laps |
Those times, distances and the UTC+1 designation are from the official Estoril timetable. Estoril’s 21-lap full races illustrate why a reader should never assume one fixed lap count for every WorldSBK round, while its 10-lap sprint matches the season-wide Superpole Race format.

- Confirm the time zone. Look for the timetable’s local-time label before converting a start time to your location.
- Separate WorldSBK from support classes. A busy programme may place WorldWCR, WorldSPB or WorldSSP sessions between the WorldSBK sessions.
- Identify the session name precisely. “Tissot Superpole” means qualifying; “Tissot Superpole Race” means the Sunday sprint.
- Check the date and start time for each race. The standard 15:30 listing is not a universal broadcast or local start time.
- Read the distance beside the race. Lap counts belong to that circuit and round, while the Superpole Race is the season-wide 10-lap sprint.
- Use the qualifying result for the right grid. Superpole controls Race 1 and the sprint start, and Race 2 from 10th onward; the sprint result controls Race 2’s top nine.
For the latest meeting information, use the event’s official timetable rather than relying on a generic calendar. That single check resolves most apparent differences in session length, order and start time.
Quick Recap
The essential takeaways
- Friday’s FP1 and FP2 are setup sessions; their lap times do not set a grid.
- FP3 is final preparation. In 2026, the standard schedule lists 20 minutes even though the glossary describes a 30-minute Saturday practice pattern, so the round timetable is authoritative.
- Tissot Superpole is qualifying and determines the Race 1 and Superpole Race grids.
- The Sunday Tissot Superpole Race lasts 10 laps, awards 12/9/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 points to its top nine and sets Race 2’s first nine grid positions.
- Race 2 positions from 10th onward come from the original Superpole order.
- Standard 2026 times are a framework. Local time, support-category assignment and race distance can change at individual rounds.
