Alef Aeronautics says it started building its first customer-bound Model A Ultralight flying cars in California on December 9, 2025. The initial vehicles are hand-assembled for a small group of customers in controlled real-world testing—not a general retail rollout.
What Alef’s production announcement actually means
Alef’s December 9, 2025 announcement identifies the Model A Ultralight as the first vehicle entering production. The company says the earliest units are being built for only a few customers who will participate in controlled testing. Alef says it will support those customers with training, compliance assistance and maintenance.

That is a meaningful manufacturing milestone, but it is narrower than a full commercial launch. The announcement does not state how many vehicles are in the first run, when ordinary customers will receive cars, or when high-volume production will begin.

Alef describes the Model A as a 100% electric, road-drivable passenger vehicle. Its design is intended to combine normal street driving with vertical takeoff and forward flight above traffic. Alef’s official description calls it the world’s first real flying car.

How the road-and-air concept works
- Electric propulsion: The vehicle is presented as fully battery-electric.
- Road use: Alef says it is designed to drive on public streets.
- Flight: It is designed to lift off vertically and then fly forward.
The cited announcements do not establish a final production range, cruising speed, payload, charging time or operating-cost figure, so those specifications should not be treated as confirmed.
Is the Alef flying car FAA approved?
Alef announced a Special Airworthiness Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in June 2023. The certificate permits legal flight testing under the limits attached to that experimental authorization.
What the certificate allows
The certification supports testing of the aircraft in permitted circumstances. It does not amount to unrestricted approval for passenger operations anywhere in the United States.

What it does not establish
- It is not blanket authorization for nationwide commercial service.
- It does not mean the Model A can fly wherever or whenever an owner chooses.
- It does not by itself complete all approvals needed for ordinary passenger service or mass production.
Flight plans, locations and purposes remain subject to the conditions of the experimental certificate and other applicable aviation rules.
When will Alef flying cars be delivered?
Alef has not published a broad delivery schedule in the December 2025 manufacturing announcement. The first vehicles are intended for a limited early-customer testing program, with training and compliance support included. A date for general customer deliveries, and the number of vehicles in that phase, has not been stated.
Why the first deliveries are likely to be different
Early cars are being hand-built and used to validate the vehicle in real-world conditions. Alef says production includes component testing and test flights before any automated scale-up. That sequence makes the first customer units part of a controlled introduction rather than evidence that regular dealer-style deliveries have begun.

In September 2024, Alef announced an agreement with PUCARA Aero and MYC to manufacture aviation-grade, certifiable parts. The stated capabilities include structural assemblies, engine parts, electrical and hydraulic systems, and avionics. The companies said the parts were intended to be suitable for certification by the FAA, EASA and other aviation authorities.
This supply-chain agreement indicates preparation for aviation-compliant production, but it does not prove that automated mass production is operating or that all regulatory approvals are complete.

How much does the Alef flying car cost?
The last specific price in the cited announcements is a $300,000 deposit price for the Model A, stated in Alef’s 2023 certification release. The December 2025 production announcement did not provide a revised retail price.
| Item | Reported figure or status | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Model A deposit price | $300,000 | Price stated in Alef’s 2023 certification announcement; a final 2025 retail price was not provided. |
| Pre-orders | More than 3,200 | Alef-reported total in September 2024. |
| Pre-orders | 3,500, valued by Alef at $1 billion | Alef-reported total in December 2025. |
| General delivery date | Not stated | The 2025 manufacturing announcement gives no broad schedule. |
| Mass-production volume | Not stated | No quantity or automated-production timetable was provided. |
The two preorder counts come from different dates and are company claims, not independently audited market data. A preorder total also does not show how many vehicles have been delivered.
Is Alef really manufacturing flying cars?
Yes, in the limited sense that Alef says production of customer-bound vehicles has started. The work currently described is small-scale, heavily manual manufacturing tied to testing and validation. It should not be confused with unrestricted sales, certified nationwide passenger flight or proven mass production.
“We’re happy to report that production of the first flying car has started on schedule. The team worked hard to meet the timeline, because we know people are waiting. We’re finally able to get production off the ground.”
— Jim Dukhovny, Alef CEO
What prospective buyers should verify
- Whether a specific vehicle is part of the controlled early-customer program.
- Which training, operating-area and compliance conditions apply to that vehicle.
- Whether the quoted $300,000 figure still applies and what it represents: a deposit, purchase price or another payment.
- What delivery window Alef can commit to in writing.
- How maintenance, parts supply and regulatory support will work after handover.
Until Alef publishes those details and obtains the approvals required for broader operations, the Model A remains an experimental road-and-air vehicle entering an early, tightly managed production phase.
