What happened to the BYD Seal?
The electric sedan caught fire near the Tsing Tin Interchange on Tuen Mun Road at about 2:01 p.m., according to CarNewsChina. The driver got out safely before flames spread through the upper cabin. Hong Kong Fire Services Department crews arrived within minutes and had extinguished the fire by 2:19 p.m.

Reports describing a preliminary technical inspection at a BYD service centre say the initial ignition occurred inside the passenger compartment. The reported explanation is that a portable power bank left on the passenger seat suffered a short circuit or thermal runaway and ignited nearby cabin materials.

Those reports also say the vehicle’s high-voltage systems were not involved in the initial ignition. The Blade Battery pack and integrated chassis reportedly remained intact, and the battery cells did not undergo thermal runaway despite severe damage to the upper cabin.
That distinction matters. An EV can sustain a fire in its interior, wiring or a separate accessory without the traction battery entering thermal runaway. Conversely, an apparently intact battery after a fire still requires professional inspection before the vehicle is moved, charged or returned to service.
How certain is the reported cause?
CarNewsChina reported the power-bank explanation, and RIEM News repeated an account from Interesting Engineering. Both describe it as the finding or preliminary account from BYD’s service-centre investigation. It should not be treated as a final regulator or court determination.

No connection has been established. A separate Chinese recall announced on September 29, 2024 covered 8,952 BYD Yuan Plus vehicles—not the Seal involved in Hong Kong.
The recall authority said wear in supplier tooling could create microscopic cracks in capacitors inside the electric power-steering controller. Those cracks could expand into a short circuit, overheat and burn nearby material. BYD’s stated remedy was to install an insulating pad; owners were instructed to stop using an affected vehicle and contact a service outlet if they noticed an abnormal burning smell.

What drivers should do with portable power banks
- Do not leave a power bank or portable charger on a vehicle seat, dashboard or other hot, exposed surface.
- Follow the device maker’s storage and temperature guidance, particularly when the car is parked in direct sun.
- Stop using a unit that is swollen, cracked, wet, unusually hot or damaged, and keep it away from combustible materials.
- Use reputable, safety-certified equipment with short-circuit and over-temperature protection.
- If smoke or flames appear, evacuate immediately, move well clear and call emergency services. Do not re-enter for belongings or attempt to retrieve the device.
After any vehicle fire, arrange assessment by an authorized EV service facility before towing, charging or driving the car. Damage that is not visible in the cabin can still affect high-voltage isolation and occupant safety.
