What is the difference between World Car of the Year and North American Car of the Year?
World Car of the Year is the overall title in the World Car Awards program. How World Car of the Year eligibility works
Eligibility changes by award season, so the 2027 rules should not be treated as permanent law. For the 2027 World Car of the Year category, the eligibility window runs from January 1, 2026, through March 19, 2027, according to the official criteria.
New or significantly new vehicles
A candidate must be a new vehicle or a vehicle that has been significantly changed for the relevant season. The rule is designed to keep a routine trim-level update from competing on the same footing as a genuinely new model or major redesign.

Minimum annual production
The 2027 overall category specifies production of at least 10,000 units per year. That threshold favors vehicles with meaningful series production rather than extremely limited builds. It is a stated WCA condition for that season, not a universal requirement for every future award.
Pricing and market position
The 2027 overall candidate must be priced below the luxury-car level in its primary markets. WCA does not express that condition as one global dollar ceiling, which matters because luxury pricing varies substantially by country, taxes and equipment levels.
Sales on two continents
The vehicle must be on sale in at least two named major markets on two continents during the eligibility period. WCA defines “on sale” as physically available for customer delivery or lease at a dealership; advance orders alone do not satisfy the condition. This prevents a vehicle announced for a future launch from qualifying merely because reservations have opened.
Why the cross-market test matters
A model can be excellent in one country but unavailable elsewhere. WCA’s two-continent test asks jurors to consider a vehicle that has a genuine international presence. It also explains why a strong regional product may be absent from the overall WCA ballot even if it is highly regarded at home.

What categories does World Car Awards use?
WCA combines an overall award with specialist categories. The categories listed for the current program are:
- World Car of the Year: the overall honor.
- World Urban Car: a category aimed at vehicles suited to urban use.
- World Luxury Car: luxury-oriented vehicles.
- World Performance Car: performance-focused models.
- World Electric Vehicle: eligible battery-electric vehicles.
- World Car Design of the Year: design judged as a separate achievement.
Winning a specialist category is not the same as winning the overall title. A vehicle may lead the electric or performance field while another model receives the top overall award. How are World Car of the Year winners chosen?
International automotive journalists form the WCA electorate. For the 2027 season, WCA describes a 100-person international panel on its homepage. Jurors drive eligible vehicles, assess them through successive voting rounds and select finalists and winners during the award season.
The 2026 program published a separate schedule of finalist and winner milestones in its 2026 timeline. Because dates and eligible vehicles change each year, readers should use the timeline for the season they are following instead of assuming that one year’s calendar repeats exactly.
What the WCA ballot is trying to measure
The WCA process rewards a vehicle that can make a persuasive case across markets, not simply the vehicle that is fastest, cheapest or most popular in one country. International jurors bring different road conditions, regulations, fuel and charging availability, vehicle taxes and customer expectations to their evaluations. The result is a global editorial judgment, not a laboratory ranking.
Reach claims and how to read them
World Car Awards says its program reaches 47 top global markets, citing a 2025 media report by AITASTIC, and reports a global audience of 413 million on its about page. Those figures are organization-reported reach claims rather than independently audited measurements in the information available here. They describe the scale WCA attributes to its media presence, not the quality or objectivity of the judging.
Who votes for the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year?
NACTOY says 50 professional automotive journalists from the United States, Canada and Mexico serve on its jury. They evaluate new or substantially changed vehicles eligible for that award season and vote within the three NACTOY classes. The current jury description appears in the official press kit.

NACTOY was founded in 1994. Its Utility Vehicle category was added in 2017, reflecting how quickly crossovers, SUVs and other multipurpose vehicles became a central part of the North American market. The history and category explanation are provided by NACTOY’s About page.
NACTOY category boundaries explained
Car
The Car class covers eligible passenger cars that do not fall into NACTOY’s Truck or Utility definitions. A sedan, hatchback, wagon or sports car can compete here when it meets that season’s eligibility rules.
Truck
NACTOY’s Truck category includes pickups as well as light- and medium-duty commercial vans. That is broader than the everyday use of “truck,” so a commercial van can be a legitimate Truck finalist even though private buyers may not describe it that way.
Utility Vehicle
The Utility class includes SUVs, crossovers and passenger-oriented minivans. A minivan’s inclusion is important: NACTOY treats a people-moving minivan as a Utility Vehicle rather than a Car. The class is therefore based on the vehicle’s role and configuration, not just its body style or marketing name.
Why category definitions affect the result
Category placement determines the vehicles a jury compares directly. A family crossover is not competing against a sports coupe for the same NACTOY title, and a pickup is not judged against a minivan. The category winner is the strongest vehicle in that class under NACTOY’s rules, not necessarily the strongest vehicle of every type sold in North America.

NACTOY describes a three-stage process in which the field is reduced before the final vote. Deloitte tallies the ballots, providing an independent counting function for the program.
- Initial narrowing: eligible vehicles are evaluated and the field is reduced to approximately 10 vehicles in each category.
- Finalist selection: jurors vote again to identify three finalists in Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle.
- Winner vote: the jury chooses one winner in each class from the three finalists.
The process includes comparison testing rather than relying only on specifications or a short first drive. A finalist therefore represents repeated consideration by the jury, but the award remains a collective journalist judgment rather than a consumer survey or a controlled engineering test.

What are the 2026 World Car and NACTOY winners?
2026 World Car of the Year: BMW iX3
World Car Awards named the BMW iX3 the 2026 World Car of the Year. That result is the overall WCA title, selected from the globally eligible field under that season’s rules. 2026 NACTOY Car of the Year: Dodge Charger
NACTOY named the Dodge Charger its 2026 Car of the Year. This is the winner of NACTOY’s passenger-car class, judged by its North American journalist jury.
2026 NACTOY Truck of the Year: Ford Maverick Lobo
The Ford Maverick Lobo won NACTOY’s 2026 Truck of the Year award. The result sits within NACTOY’s Truck definition, which includes pickups and qualifying commercial vans.
2026 NACTOY Utility Vehicle of the Year: Hyundai Palisade
The Hyundai Palisade won NACTOY’s 2026 Utility Vehicle of the Year award. It was selected from the Utility field, a class that includes SUVs, crossovers and passenger-oriented minivans.
NACTOY announced all three 2026 results on January 14, 2026, in its official release, “2026 Winners: Charger, Maverick Lobo & Palisade.”

Why one vehicle can win one award but not the other
The two programs can produce different winners without either jury making a mistake. First, the eligible pools are different. WCA requires international availability across two continents, while NACTOY evaluates vehicles in a North American program. A model sold widely in North America may not meet WCA’s cross-continent condition, and a global model may not be offered in the United States, Canada or Mexico.

Third, the juries have different geographic perspectives. WCA’s 100-person 2027 panel is international; NACTOY’s 50 jurors are based in North America. Their experiences with charging networks, winter weather, road design, fuel prices, vehicle size and local regulations naturally shape what they notice.
Finally, each program’s season has its own eligibility dates and timetable. A vehicle can be ready for customers in one region while still awaiting a launch in another, or it can fall inside one program’s window and outside the other’s.
Which award should a car shopper trust?
Use the award that matches the decision you are making rather than treating either badge as a universal recommendation.

- Read the category carefully before drawing a conclusion. “Car of the Year” in NACTOY is not the same title as overall “World Car of the Year,” and NACTOY’s Utility and Truck classes include vehicle types that some shoppers classify differently.
An award is evidence that a jury found a vehicle compelling under a stated process. It is not proof that the vehicle has the lowest ownership cost, the best reliability, the greatest cargo capacity or the right driving position for you. After using an award as a shortlist tool, compare local pricing, warranty terms, safety results, charging or fuel access, seating and cargo needs, and the vehicle’s availability in your market.
How to verify an award by season
- Identify the exact award name. Confirm whether the claim refers to WCA’s overall title, a WCA specialist category or one of NACTOY’s three classes.
- Check the award year. Eligibility rules and schedules are season-specific; the 2027 WCA criteria should not be presented as rules for every year.
- Open the program’s official result page. WCA results are published at worldcarawards.com; NACTOY’s 2026 results are at the official 2026 winners release.
- Confirm market availability. A WCA candidate must meet that season’s two-continent and on-sale conditions; an advance order is not the same as dealership availability for customer delivery.
- Match the class to your use. A NACTOY Truck winner may be a pickup or qualifying commercial van, while a Utility winner may be an SUV, crossover or passenger minivan.
- Use the award as one input. Verify the vehicle’s specifications, safety information, equipment, service network and real purchase price before making a decision.
Are these awards objective tests?
No. Both are structured jury awards, not standardized laboratory tests. Their rules make the process more transparent: WCA sets eligibility conditions and uses an international journalist panel; NACTOY identifies its 50 jurors, stages its voting and uses Deloitte to tally ballots. Those safeguards explain how the results are produced, but they do not turn a value judgment into a universal measurement.
Journalists can disagree about ride quality, user interfaces, design, practicality or performance priorities. The awards condense those judgments into a recognizable result. A buyer who values a quiet cabin, a third-row seat, a low lease payment or an established service network may reasonably choose a non-winner.
Bottom line: complementary awards, not competing titles
World Car of the Year is a global overall award with specialist categories and season-specific cross-continent eligibility. NACTOY is a North American program that names separate Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle winners through a 50-member regional journalist jury. The 2026 results—BMW iX3 for WCA, and Dodge Charger, Ford Maverick Lobo and Hyundai Palisade for NACTOY’s three classes—illustrate the distinction. Treat the badges as different lenses on new vehicles, then apply your own market, budget and practical requirements.
