The black border around a windshield is ceramic frit: a coating applied to the glass perimeter. It shields the polyurethane adhesive beneath it from ultraviolet (UV) rays. The small dots create a gradual transition from the solid black edge to clear glass; Ford says this halftone pattern also helps prevent optical distortion during glass manufacture.
What is windshield frit?
Frit is a black ceramic composite applied around the perimeter of automotive glass. Sika’s 2026 auto-glass replacement guideline describes it as serving cosmetic and protective purposes. The solid black band is the coated edge; the dots are part of the transition from that band to the clear glass.
Why does a windshield have black dots?
The dots form a halftone pattern, making the change from the solid black frit to transparent glass more gradual. Ford Motor Company Mexico describes this transition as helping prevent optical distortion during glass manufacture in its November 2020 explanation of the dots on car windows.
The sources describe these functions, but do not establish that every vehicle uses an identical pattern or that every frit design has precisely the same intent.

How does the black border protect the windshield?
Windshields are bonded to the vehicle with polyurethane adhesive. The ceramic frit covers the perimeter area and helps protect that adhesive from harmful UV exposure, according to Sika’s 2026 guideline. Its black appearance also gives the glass edge a finished look.
Are the dots a defect or something to repair?
No: the cited sources describe frit and its dot pattern as features of automotive glass, not as damage. They do not support treating ordinary dots as a defect or recommending a consumer repair product for them. If the glass itself is chipped or cracked, that is a separate issue from its normal frit pattern.

What to know if the windshield needs replacement
Frit is a factory-applied feature, not a separate consumer accessory. If you are arranging a replacement, the relevant questions are whether the glass is compatible with your vehicle and whether any required installation or calibration work is included.
