Windshield replacement can affect a forward-facing driver-assistance camera, and calibration may be required. Whether it is needed—and whether the correct procedure is static, dynamic, or a combination—depends on the vehicle’s year, make, model, and automaker instructions. Before authorizing the work, ask the glass provider to verify the procedure for your exact vehicle and confirm what proof of completion it will provide.
Do you need to recalibrate the camera after windshield replacement?
Possibly. A camera mounted to or viewing through the windshield can be affected when the glass is removed and replaced. The calibration requirement is vehicle-specific; do not assume every vehicle uses the same process or that a warning light will reliably tell you whether calibration is needed.
Use the automaker’s service information for the exact year, make, model, and applicable configuration. I-CAR’s calibration requirements lookup can help identify calibration events and tool requirements, but it does not provide the calibration procedure or replace OEM service information. I-CAR also cautions that requirements can differ by model year in its guide to using the OEM calibration requirements search.
What calibration method might your vehicle require?
The required method and conditions come from the vehicle’s procedure, not driver preference. Broadly, calibration can be static, dynamic, or a combined process. AAA’s overview of ADAS sensor calibration is useful for understanding the distinction, but it is not a substitute for the automaker’s vehicle-specific instructions.

| Method | What it involves | What determines the setup |
|---|---|---|
| Static | The vehicle is placed in a controlled shop environment, where a target is positioned and aligned; a scan tool may initiate calibration. | The automaker procedure specifies the target, tool, measurements, lighting, floor conditions, and placement. |
| Dynamic | A scan tool may initiate a prescribed drive on roads with appropriate lane markings and visibility. | Required speed, distance, road type, and weather vary by vehicle. Use only the specified route and conditions. |
| Combined | Some vehicles require a static calibration followed by a dynamic calibration or validation drive. | The manufacturer’s instructions determine the sequence and completion criteria. |
I-CAR’s examples, including its 2024 RAM 1500 and 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid lookup information, illustrate that requirements vary across vehicles and systems; they should not be applied to another vehicle without checking its own service information.
What should be ready before calibration?
Preparation depends on the exact procedure. Common items that may matter include correct replacement glass, a clear camera view, correct tire pressure, specified vehicle loading and ride height, wheel alignment, a level work surface, and compatible targets or scan tools. Not every procedure requires every check; the automaker’s instructions control.

Manufacturer-specific examples in Hyundai TSB 20-BE-006H and Audi service bulletin material archived by NHTSA address factors such as glass type, camera mounting, connector condition, the camera’s field of view, and calibration-panel lighting. Those details apply to the covered vehicles and procedures, not universally.
How can you tell whether calibration was completed?
Ask the provider directly and request available documentation. A useful record should identify the vehicle and the calibration work performed, and may include the procedure or method, completion result, and diagnostic information. What documentation is available can vary, so ask what the shop can provide rather than assuming there is one universal certificate.

Before the repair, ask:
- Does the exact year, make, model, and configuration require camera calibration after this glass replacement?
- Which OEM procedure will you follow, and is it static, dynamic, or combined?
- Will the work be completed by your shop or another provider?
- What record will show whether calibration completed and whether any diagnostic issues remain?
What if calibration fails or a warning remains?
A warning, or the absence of one, is not a substitute for the specified procedure and diagnostics. If calibration will not complete or an ADAS warning remains, have the provider follow the vehicle’s diagnostic instructions rather than jumping straight to camera replacement.
Depending on the vehicle, troubleshooting may include checking that the camera is secured to its bracket, inspecting connector terminals, confirming the camera’s view is clear, verifying the specified glass and camera pad, and following required reset and calibration steps. The Hyundai and Audi bulletin examples describe vehicle-specific checks; they are not general instructions for other makes and models.

Can you drive with a camera warning after replacement?
A camera or ADAS warning means the affected assistance feature may not be available or may not operate as intended. Do not rely on lane-departure assistance, automatic emergency braking, or another camera-based feature as a substitute for attentive driving. Follow the vehicle owner’s manual and contact the repair provider promptly to determine whether the vehicle needs diagnosis or calibration before normal use. If the windshield installation itself has a safety concern, ask the installer whether the vehicle is safe to drive.
Should you buy an ADAS calibration target?
Usually, a target is a shop-tool category rather than a universal DIY solution. Some procedures require a compatible target and scan tool; others specify a different workflow. I-CAR’s lookup does not list tool part numbers or provide calibration procedures. Confirm the exact vehicle’s required tools and process before buying equipment; a qualified glass or repair provider that can verify, perform, and document the correct procedure is often the more practical route.
