They are wartime U.S. Army ¼-ton 4×4 vehicles built by different manufacturers to the same standardized military design. Willys-Overland built the MB; Ford built the GPW as a second-source version when Army demand exceeded Willys’ capacity.
Most parts and many visible features are shared, so a surviving Jeep can contain components from both production lines. The strongest first clue is structural: an original Willys MB normally has a tubular front frame crossmember, while an original Ford GPW uses an inverted-U channel crossmember with a flat top. Confirm that clue with frame markings, body details, grille type and several component marks rather than relying on one badge or replacement part.

Why Willys and Ford built two versions of the same Jeep
The Army’s light reconnaissance-vehicle program involved American Bantam, Willys-Overland and Ford. Willys received the first mass-production contract, and Ford later received a contract to build the Willys MB design as a second source. The goal was a common military vehicle that could be supplied in large numbers and repaired with standardized parts, not two competing vehicles with deliberately different mechanical systems.

Ford’s designation is commonly explained as Government, the 80-inch-wheelbase reconnaissance class and the Willys design. Willys used the MB model designation. Both manufacturers produced vehicles for wartime service during 1941–1945, according to the Swedish military vehicle register Arsenalen.

Are the MB and GPW mechanically identical?
They are extremely close, but identical is too absolute. Army standardization made the vehicles similar enough that maintenance units could use available parts without regard to the original manufacturer. The same basic chassis layout, body concept, axles, controls and powertrain allowed the two models to serve together and be maintained through a common supply system.
The wartime engine in both models was the Willys L-134 Go Devil, a four-cylinder, side-valve engine. That shared engine family does not prove a vehicle is a Willys: engines were replaced, rebuilt and transferred between vehicles. Likewise, a Ford-marked bolt or a Willys body panel can be absent from an otherwise original vehicle.

Some features appeared at different times, changed as the Army pushed the companies toward one standard configuration, or were supplied by outside body manufacturers. Consequently, an early MB and a late GPW may look more alike than two vehicles from different production periods.
The quickest structural clue: inspect the front crossmember
Look behind the front grille at the crossmember joining the frame rails. On a Willys MB, the front crossmember is described as tubular. On a Ford GPW, it is an inverted-U-shaped channel with a flat top. When the frame is original and the part has not been replaced, this is usually the most useful single construction distinction.

Inspect the member itself rather than judging the grille opening from the outside. Dirt, paint, winch equipment, bumper modifications and restoration work can hide its shape. A frame may also have been repaired or exchanged, so the crossmember is a strong clue, not an absolute identity certificate. Use it as the first branch in a multi-clue inspection.
Other clues that separate an MB from a GPW
Chassis number and frame identification
The U.S. War Department manual ¼-TON 4 x 4 TRUCK (WILLYS-OVERLAND MODEL MB and FORD MODEL GPW), TM 9-803, covers both models and their chassis identification. A specialist identification guide places the Ford GPW chassis number stamped directly into the upper-left front frame rail. The Willys MB number is described on a plate attached to the left frame member, with plate formats changing during production.

This difference is useful only when the stamping or plate is original. Plates can be replaced during restoration, and the specialist guide documents postwar re-stamping and other alterations. A neat number that agrees with the body, engine and known production details is more persuasive than a plate considered in isolation. Photograph the stamping, record its exact location and compare the style and sequence with period documentation before assigning an identity.
Grille design and external names
Early Willys MBs used a welded vertical-slat grille. Ford brought the stamped-steel grille into production, and Willys adopted that grille as the two manufacturers moved toward one standard design. The Arkansas Air & Military Museum places Willys’ adoption of the stamped grille by April 1942.
That means a stamped grille is not a Ford-only feature. It can identify an early production direction when combined with other evidence, but it cannot by itself distinguish a later MB from a GPW. Early Willys vehicles also carried Willys embossed on the rear panel. Early Ford GPWs carried Ford script on the rear panel, and the museum describes an F embossed in the rear panel on early GPWs. The Army later removed external company names as standardization progressed, so the absence of lettering is not proof of either model.

Ford F marks and component details
Ford marked many GPW parts with a small F, including numerous bolt heads. An F mark on several appropriate components can support a GPW identification. One replacement bolt cannot. Bolts, brackets, tools and other small parts were routinely changed during service, and restorers often substitute parts to complete a vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
The specialist guide lists additional manufacturer-specific marks on engines, bodies and components. Treat those details as corroboration. A consistent group of marks in the right production context is valuable; a single marked component is only evidence that the component may have originated with Ford.
Engine evidence
Both models used the Willys L-134 Go Devil engine during wartime production. Engine stampings and casting details can help establish when or where an engine was made, but they do not independently establish the vehicle’s original manufacturer. Military units rebuilt engines and installed replacements, and postwar owners frequently swapped engines to keep a Jeep operating.
Record the engine number, casting marks and obvious rebuild evidence, then compare them with the chassis number and body date clues. An engine that fits the vehicle’s production period strengthens the story; an engine from a different period may simply document a later replacement.
Body construction and production transitions
Body construction changed during the war. The identification guide distinguishes Ford-made bodies, Willys-associated ACM Type 1 bodies and later composite bodies used in different periods, including shared or transitional arrangements. This makes a simple rule such as Ford body equals GPW or Willys body equals MB unreliable.

Inspect the body as a dated system: floor construction, tool-storage details, gussets, welds, stamping style and surviving markings should agree with one another. A body may have been replaced while the frame remained original, or a later composite body may have been fitted to an earlier chassis. The more transitions a vehicle has passed through, the less useful any single body feature becomes.

How to identify a Jeep step by step
- Start with the frame. Clean a small area behind the grille and determine whether the front crossmember is tubular or an inverted-U channel with a flat top. Photograph the whole member and any repairs.
- Locate the chassis identification. Search the upper-left front frame rail for a stamped Ford-style number. Check the left frame member for a Willys identification plate. Do not remove paint or metal aggressively until the vehicle’s preservation value and local rules have been considered.
- Document the number exactly. Record every character, spacing, font characteristic and surrounding damage. A partial or altered number should be labeled as partial or altered rather than silently “corrected.”
- Check the grille’s construction. Welded vertical slats point toward an early Willys MB. A stamped grille fits Ford production but also fits later Willys production, so use it as a date and configuration clue rather than a final answer.
- Inspect rear-panel markings. Look for early Willys or Ford script and the Ford F embossing described for early GPW bodies. Remember that the Army later removed external company names and that panels are replaceable.
- Survey multiple F marks. Check several accessible bolt heads and components, not just one fastener. Consistent Ford marks support a GPW; their absence does not disprove one because parts were exchanged and worn items were replaced.
- Record engine information. Photograph the L-134 engine number and casting marks. Use them to test whether the engine’s period fits the chassis, while allowing for a replacement engine.
- Compare body details as a group. Assess floor panels, weld patterns, tool-storage features and body-manufacturer clues against the vehicle’s apparent production period. A mixed or composite body should be recorded as such.
- Check for postwar changes. Note civilian seats, windshield changes, utility bodies, non-original axles, replacement frames, modern fasteners and repainting. These changes explain contradictions that are not manufacturing differences.
- Write a qualified identification. State the strongest evidence and its limits, for example: frame consistent with GPW, body mixed, chassis stamping uncertain. This is more accurate than assigning a model from a single grille or badge.
Why mixed MB and GPW parts are normal
Front-line maintenance prioritized availability and serviceability. Army units used compatible parts from whichever source was available, so a GPW could receive a Willys component and an MB could receive a Ford component. Rebuild depots and later civilian owners continued that practice.
Long service histories add further layers. Frames may be repaired or swapped, bodies may be replaced, engines may be rebuilt, and identification plates may be lost or fitted during restoration. A vehicle assembled from an original frame, a replacement body and a later engine is not unusual; it simply cannot be judged by a single component.
This is also why restoration accuracy requires a production date and a documented component history. Replacing every visible part with one manufacturer’s markings may create a visually coherent Jeep that never existed in that exact configuration. Preserve evidence of mixed components when provenance matters, and distinguish surviving wartime parts from reproduction or replacement parts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon identification mistakes
Assuming every stamped grille is a GPW
Ford introduced the stamped grille, but Willys adopted it during standardization. A stamped grille is shared by later examples and cannot settle the question.

Using a single F-marked bolt as proof
F-marked fasteners are supportive evidence, not a vehicle-wide identity. One bolt can be replaced, traded or reproduced.
Treating the engine as the vehicle’s identity
The same L-134 Go Devil engine family served both models, and engines were replaceable. Engine evidence must agree with the frame and body.
Trusting a plate without checking the frame
Willys plates can be replaced, and altered or re-stamped numbers are documented. Compare the plate with the frame, body and period sequence.
Expecting a perfectly pure survivor
Interchangeability was a design requirement and mixed parts were normal in service. Contradictory details often describe the vehicle’s history rather than a mistake in the original manufacturer.
Using TM 9-803 and other references
For period operating and identification information, consult the U.S. War Department manual TM 9-803, ¼-TON 4 x 4 TRUCK (WILLYS-OVERLAND MODEL MB and FORD MODEL GPW). Its title itself confirms that the Army treated the MB and GPW as related models within the same technical system.
The Arkansas Air & Military Museum’s Ford GPW history is useful for the production relationship, grille transition, early markings and the crossmember distinction. Arsenalen’s register supplies the attributed production totals, period and Go Devil engine listing. The specialist Willys Overland Serbia identification guide is useful for detailed serial-number, body and component clues, while also warning that postwar alterations complicate identification. A restoration-parts listing from Willys.be illustrates the practical fitment distinction: a late Willys MB frame plate is not intended for Ford GPW vehicles. Parts should be selected only after the model, production period and existing frame evidence have been established.
What the evidence can establish
A GPW is Ford’s wartime production version of the standardized Willys design, while an MB is Willys-Overland’s version. They share the Go Devil engine family and many interchangeable parts. The tubular-versus-inverted-U front crossmember distinction is the best first inspection point, but reliable identification comes from several mutually consistent clues.
If the frame, chassis marking, body details and component marks disagree, report the Jeep as mixed, altered or uncertain instead of forcing a clean label. That qualification is often the most historically accurate answer for a vehicle that spent years in military and civilian service.
