Toyota’s GR Supra Supercar is being prepared with a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 based on the 2UR-GSE. That engine is not the specification of a new road-going Supra. Toyota Australia’s showroom Supra used a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, and Toyota says that model was discontinued from August 2025 and is no longer available to buy.
What the V8 Supra actually is
Toyota has announced a GEN3 GR Supra Supercar for the Australian Supercars grid in 2026. Toyota Design Australia produced the full-size clay model, while contemporary reporting identifies the race engine as a 5.0-litre, naturally aspirated V8 based on Toyota’s 2UR-GSE.
This is a competition programme, not a V8 version of the road car. The race Supra is built to compete within the Supercars category’s regulations and preparation requirements. Its engine, bodywork and other race hardware should not be read as a showroom specification.
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said racing provides “technical learnings that can be transferred to the development of our entire range of vehicles – not just our sports cars.” That explains the programme’s engineering rationale, but it does not amount to a promise of a street-legal V8.

Will you be able to buy a V8-powered Supra?
There is no confirmed Australian production schedule, retail price or road-registration plan for a V8 Supra. The 5.0-litre engine belongs to the 2026 Supercars entry, and reporting on 6 August 2025 said the car was not planned as a street-legal production model.
In practical terms, a road buyer cannot order the race car from a Toyota dealer. Any future V8 road model would require a separate Toyota announcement covering production, compliance and sales; none is established here.
What engine does the Australian road-going GR Supra use?
The final Australian road-car specification was a BMW-developed B58B30O1 2,998cm³ turbocharged inline-six. Toyota Australia’s July 2025 specification table lists:
Rank #2
- DIE-CAST MODEL: Jada 1:18 scale Toyota GR Supra features premium die-cast metal construction with authentic details and opening parts for realistic play and display

Those figures describe the road Supra only. They do not describe the Supercars V8, whose output, gearing and calibration are determined by its racing specification.

Toyota Australia’s current GR Supra product page states that the model shown “has been discontinued from August 2025” and “is not available for purchase.” That notice means historical list prices should not be treated as current dealer inventory or as evidence that a replacement V8 is arriving.
Historical 2025 Australian pricing
Toyota’s 2025 Track Edition release listed these manufacturer prices before on-road costs:

| Track Edition | $105,295 | Historical manufacturer price; not current inventory pricing |
The Track Edition was the road car’s highest listed Australian grade in that release. It should be considered separately from the race programme.
What will the Supra race against?
The V8 Supra will race against other entries in the Australian Supercars championship under the GEN3 rules. That is a different comparison from shopping for a sports coupe: race teams work within category regulations, parity requirements and team-specific preparation rather than road-car trim levels, warranties or dealer pricing.
Toyota Design Australia Senior Manager Nic Hogios said the design team had “amped up the car significantly” to give fans a track-focused interpretation of GR Supra performance. The dramatic body is therefore a racing identity, not evidence that the production car has been redesigned around a V8.

Which road cars are the relevant Australian rivals?
For a road-car comparison, the closest Australian alternatives identified for the Track Edition are the Nissan Z Nismo and Ford Mustang Dark Horse. They belong in a showroom comparison with the six-cylinder Supra, not in a direct engine-to-engine comparison with the Supercars V8.
| Comparison | What it means |
|---|---|
| GR Supra road car | Two-seat sports car with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six; Toyota lists automatic and manual acceleration figures. |
| Nissan Z Nismo | Closest listed Australian road-car rival to the Track Edition. |
| Ford Mustang Dark Horse | Closest listed Australian road-car rival to the Track Edition. |
| GR Supra Supercar | 2026 race entry with a 5.0-litre 2UR-GSE-based naturally aspirated V8. |
Power, torque, handling, practicality, transmission choices and warranty terms should be compared using each road model’s own published specification. The race Supra has no equivalent retail warranty or dealer transaction.
Does the V8 mean Toyota is replacing the six-cylinder?
No. Toyota has announced a V8-powered competition car, not a V8 replacement for the discontinued road Supra. The six-cylinder figures remain the final Australian road-car specification cited by Toyota, while the V8 is tied to the 2026 Supercars programme.
