Yes—the redesigned 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe is a compelling family SUV if comfort, cargo space and distinctive styling matter more to you than sporty handling or a truly adult-friendly third row. Its squared-off body creates useful room, the turbocharged engine is strong, and the ride is relaxed on commutes and road trips. The trade-offs are a coarse engine note when accelerating hard, unremarkable cornering responses and a third row that is best suited to children or occasional adults.
The clean-sheet redesign also makes the Santa Fe look more like a high-riding modern wagon than a conventional crossover. That shape is not just cosmetic: the long wheelbase, three rows and wide-opening tailgate support family and outdoor use, while the boxy profile helps deliver up to 80 cubic feet of cargo volume.
What changed for 2024
Hyundai rebuilt the Santa Fe around a taller, more upright body with a longer wheelbase, three-row seating and a broad tailgate opening. The squared-off interior follows the exterior theme and provides practical storage areas. The result is a comfort-oriented midsize crossover rather than a driver-focused SUV.
Axios described the driving position and proportions as feeling “more like a modern station wagon than a high-riding SUV.” That is a useful shorthand for the Santa Fe: it offers SUV visibility and available all-wheel drive, but its strongest qualities are passenger-and-cargo versatility and an easy ride.

How the 2024 Santa Fe drives
Turbocharged power and transmission
The standard U.S. gasoline model uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four producing 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to either the front wheels or all four wheels, depending on configuration.
Acceleration is quick enough for merging and loaded family travel. In Car and Driver’s instrumented Calligraphy AWD test, the Santa Fe reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds at 96 mph. Those are results from one publication-tested vehicle under its test conditions, not a guarantee for every trim, drivetrain or driver.
Ride, handling and noise
The suspension is tuned for a smooth, settled ride. It absorbs ordinary road imperfections well and suits commuting and long-distance trips better than aggressive cornering. Steering response and handling are merely adequate; drivers seeking a lively, tightly controlled crossover may find it bland.
Heavy throttle brings out a coarse engine note, one of the clearest dynamic compromises. Car and Driver’s overall verdict was that the new design adds curb appeal while the Santa Fe remains the comfort-oriented crossover it was before.

Car and Driver observed 24 mpg in its Calligraphy AWD testing. That figure reflects the publication’s route and conditions, so it should be treated as a reference point rather than a universal real-world promise. The Santa Fe is gasoline-powered; shoppers prioritizing maximum fuel economy should compare its turbocharged output and EPA ratings with hybrid alternatives in the same three-row class.
How much space does it have?
Cargo volume
Cargo capacity is one of the Santa Fe’s strongest reasons to exist. The boxy rear body and wide tailgate make it easier to load bulky family or outdoor equipment.

With all three rows in use, 15 cubic feet is enough for everyday bags and smaller gear but less generous than the best midsize three-row competitors. Folding the rear seats transforms the vehicle into a much more useful hauler.

Third-row comfort
The third row is practical for children and occasional adults, but it is not among the roomiest in the midsize three-row segment. Families who expect adults to use the rearmost seats frequently should sit there themselves before purchasing and compare the space directly with vehicles such as the Kia Sorento, Mitsubishi Outlander and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Towing capacity and equipment
Hyundai claims a maximum towing capacity of 4,500 pounds, but that figure applies only to the XRT trim when equipped with the optional towing package. It should not be applied to every Santa Fe configuration. Confirm the vehicle’s door-jamb information, hitch equipment and package contents before planning a trailer load.

The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe is a well-rounded family vehicle whose futuristic, boxy design serves a practical purpose. Its 15/41/80-cubic-foot cargo layout, comfortable ride, robust turbocharged engine and available all-wheel drive make it easy to live with. The compromises are equally clear: average handling, engine noise at full throttle and a third row that works better for children than for adults. For families that value space and comfort over athletic driving, the redesign is a strong choice; buyers who need frequent adult third-row seating or sportier responses should comparison-shop before committing.
