The claim traces to secondary reporting that relays a Japan’s BestCar report, not to a Toyota announcement. Toyota’s latest U.S. specification, for the 2027 GR86, still lists a 2.4-liter boxer engine.
What is confirmed about the GR86’s engine?
Toyota Motor North America’s June 1, 2026 announcement specifies a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine for the 2027 U.S.-market GR86. Toyota rates it at 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, and lists six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Toyota’s 2027 GR86 announcement does not describe an inline-four or identify a next-generation powertrain.
That is a specification for the 2027 U.S. model, not proof of what Toyota will use in a later generation. Toyota’s August 6, 2026 Japan-market release describes updates to the current GR86, including changes to throttle control, electric power steering and shift operation, as well as interior details and a triple-camera EyeSight arrangement. It does not announce a next-generation engine. The release says orders in Japan were to start August 28; its pricing and order timing are specific to that market. Toyota’s Japan-market announcement
Where did the in-house I4 claim come from?
The claim appeared in a November 27, 2024 article on Subaru.net, which said the next GR86 “appears” likely to drop the boxer and attributed the report to Japan’s BestCar. The article recounts an exchange involving Toyota executive Yuki Nakajima, but the confirmation described in that exchange concerns development of a next-generation Celica. It does not quote Nakajima confirming an inline-four for the GR86. Subaru.net’s November 2024 report

- International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
That makes the I4 a reported possibility, not a verified GR86 specification. The original BestCar report and a transcript of the exchange were not available in the sources reviewed, so the basis for the reported inference cannot be independently established here.
What do Toyota and Subaru’s announcements actually say?
The current GR86 and BRZ were jointly developed
Toyota said the second-generation GR86 and Subaru BRZ were jointly developed. In its 2021 launch announcement, Toyota described the GR86’s engine as a 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder. That documents the current generation’s collaboration and engine layout; it does not settle how a future GR86 will be developed or powered. Toyota’s second-generation GR86 announcement

The future-engine agreement is broad, not GR86-specific
In May 2024, Toyota, Subaru and Mazda announced plans to develop engines suited to electrification, integration with electric drive units and carbon-neutral fuels. The statement does not name the GR86, specify an inline-four for it, give a GR86 schedule or say that Toyota and Subaru will end their collaboration. Toyota CEO Koji Sato described the effort as a way to offer customers diverse routes toward carbon neutrality, not as an announcement of a particular sports-car engine. What can be said about the next GR86 right now?
- Confirmed: The 2027 U.S.-market GR86 retains a 2.4-liter boxer engine in Toyota’s announced specification.
- Reported, not confirmed: A future GR86 may move to an in-house inline-four, based on secondary coverage attributing the idea to BestCar.
- Not established: A next-generation launch date, engine displacement, hybrid system, output, transmission lineup or the future of Toyota–Subaru involvement.
There are no verified next-generation GR86 powertrain options to compare yet. If Toyota announces a change, the meaningful questions will include engine layout and displacement, electrification, power and torque delivery, weight and packaging, transmission availability, market availability, and Subaru’s role in development or production. Until then, those are open questions, not specifications.

How does the 86 name’s history fit in?
Toyota said in 2021 that more than 200,000 vehicles bearing the 86 name had been sold worldwide. Separately, its 2026 Japan-market announcement put GR86 deliveries at approximately 110,000 units since the model’s 2021 launch. Those figures describe different measures over different periods; neither indicates what engine a future generation will use.
