Mazda plans to introduce a next-generation CX-5 combining its 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-Z gasoline engine with Mazda’s own hybrid system by the end of 2027. That is a future product plan, not a specification for the 2026 CX-5. Mazda also plans its first battery EV on a dedicated platform in 2027, but has not said that EV will be a CX-5.
When is the next Mazda CX-5 hybrid coming?
Mazda’s 2025 strategy briefing schedules the SKYACTIV-Z and Mazda hybrid-system combination for the next-generation CX-5 by the end of 2027. The announcement establishes a target and a powertrain pairing; it does not provide a final launch date by market or confirm when orders will open. Mazda’s Multi-Solution Briefing 2025 describes the plan as: “The SKYACTIV-Z will be combined with Mazda’s unique hybrid system and scheduled to be introduced to the next-generation MAZDA CX-5 launched by the end of 2027.”
What engine and hybrid system will it use?
SKYACTIV-Z is still under development
Mazda describes SKYACTIV-Z as a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine intended to serve as a core engine in its electrification-era lineup. The company says it is developing the engine to balance fuel economy and driving performance, and to meet Euro 7 requirements in Europe as well as LEV4 and Tier 4 standards in North America. These are development aims, not verified production results or independently tested performance figures. Mazda has not announced the CX-5 hybrid’s horsepower, fuel economy, battery details, or other final drivetrain specifications.
What the hybrid label does—and does not—tell us
Mazda has said the engine will be paired with its “unique hybrid system,” but the cited announcement does not explain the system’s hardware or operating details. There is not enough published information to compare the planned hybrid’s output or efficiency with the 2026 CX-5, or to infer its price or driving characteristics.

How the planned hybrid differs from the 2026 CX-5
The 2026 CX-5 launch powertrains announced for North America and Europe are distinct from the future SKYACTIV-Z hybrid plan. The specifications are region-specific:

The first row’s figures and equipment are from Mazda North American Operations’ U.S. announcement. The European and other-market powertrain and timing are from Mazda’s European CX-5 release. They should not be read as specifications for the planned SKYACTIV-Z hybrid.
Is Mazda’s new BEV platform for the CX-5?
Mazda says it plans to launch its first battery electric vehicle using a self-developed, EV-dedicated platform in 2027. The company says the platform is designed to accommodate different battery types and support multiple model derivatives. The cited announcements do not identify that first BEV as a CX-5, so the EV plan should be treated separately from the announced CX-5 hybrid. See Mazda’s March 18, 2025 strategy release.
Mazda also attached manufacturing and development estimates to the planned EV program. It expects development investment to be 40% lower and development man-hours 50% lower than conventional development through collaboration and partnership. It estimates that using existing manufacturing assets for EVs and engine vehicles on the same line could reduce initial capital investment by 85% and mass-production preparation time by 80% compared with a new EV-dedicated factory. These are Mazda projections, not independently audited outcomes.

How SKYACTIV-Z could affect Mazda’s other engines
Mazda says combustion improvements developed for SKYACTIV-Z will also be applied to inline-six engines used in its large products and will inform emissions development for rotary engines. It has also described a future reduction in the number of engine hardware units and control software. These are broader technology-development plans; Mazda has not provided production timelines or detailed specifications for those applications in the cited material. What Mazda has not confirmed
- Final horsepower, torque, fuel economy, price, battery capacity, or detailed hybrid-system design for the next-generation CX-5.
- A market-by-market launch schedule for the SKYACTIV-Z hybrid beyond Mazda’s target of introduction by the end of 2027.
- That the first BEV on Mazda’s dedicated platform will be a CX-5.
- Independent performance or efficiency results for the future hybrid; the announced emissions and performance objectives remain manufacturer development goals.
Why Mazda is emphasizing the CX-5
The CX-5 is a major model for Mazda: in its July 2025 U.S. announcement, Mazda North American Operations reported 4.5 million cumulative global sales and more than 1.6 million U.S. sales since the model debuted in 2012. Those are Mazda’s own cumulative figures, not a third-party sales tally. Mazda’s announcement presented the redesigned 2026 model ahead of the later hybrid plan.
