The next-generation combustion BMW M3 has been spotted testing near the Nürburgring with bodywork that looks close to production, but it is still a camouflaged prototype—not a final reveal. Autoblog’s September 18, 2026 report identifies it as the G84 and notes that cladding continues to hide parts of the hood, fenders and bumpers. The visible shape suggests a blend of Neue Klasse-inspired styling and familiar M3 cues, including a lower front intake, flared arches and quad exhaust outlets.
What does the next BMW M3 look like?
The prototype’s proportions and main body surfaces appear more developed than those of a heavily disguised test mule. In Autoblog’s September 18, 2026 spy-photo report, the front end is described as drawing on the M Vision Neue Klasse concept while retaining a more traditional lower fascia. The visible details include trapezoidal side intakes, a divided central lower intake, swollen wheel arches, a subtle trunk lip and four rear exhaust outlets.
Those are observations of a test car, not a confirmed description of the finished M3. Cladding still covers portions of the hood, fenders and bumpers, and Autoblog says production will bring different wheel designs. The report also speculates about carbon-ceramic brakes based on the apparent calipers; BMW has not confirmed that equipment.
Is the next BMW M3 electric or gas-powered?
This G84 prototype is the combustion-powered M3. It is separate from BMW’s electric M3, which the company has discussed as part of its Neue Klasse plans. BMW’s M Concept Neue Klasse is an electric design and technology preview, not the combustion car and not a vehicle currently intended for sale.

BMW M’s concept page describes the concept’s four-motor setup and BMW M Dynamic Performance Control. Those features should not be transferred to the combustion prototype: the two cars represent different powertrain paths.
What engine and performance can buyers expect?
There is no confirmed G84 engine specification in the cited reporting. Autoblog expects a refined S58 twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six and discusses possible mild electrification and output, but presents those as expectations. Car and Driver also expects a reworked six-cylinder and says mild-hybrid assistance is possible; it notes that transmission and drivetrain details remain uncertain. Neither report establishes final horsepower, transmission, or hybrid configuration, so those details should not be treated as settled.

When does the new BMW M3 come out?
BMW’s October 2, 2026 announcement says the Munich plant is set to manufacture the fully electric BMW M3 from 2027. That is a production plan for the electric model, not a confirmed launch date for the combustion G84. Car and Driver’s July 17, 2026 report forecasts a 2028 arrival for the combustion car after the electric variant, but that is a publication’s expectation rather than an official BMW customer-launch date.
BMW has not confirmed a combustion-M3 order date, customer-delivery date or price in the cited sources. The one-millionth BMW M High Performance vehicle milestone reported by BMW in 2026 is company-wide production context, not evidence about future M3 sales or the G84’s specifications.
