No direct i4 replacement has been confirmed. BMW has announced a new, fully electric i3 sedan for the Neue Klasse era and positions it as an electric 3 Series. BMW says it replaces the current 3 Series Sedan at its Munich plant from October 2026, but the plant’s model list still includes the i4 and BMW has not stated an i4 end date. The evidence supports a new electric 3 Series arriving—not a confirmed plan to replace the i4.
What BMW has announced about the new i3
BMW Group introduced the new fully electric i3 on March 19, 2026, calling it the second model in its Neue Klasse generation. The company describes the car as a BMW 3 Series and presents its design as a continuation of the 3 Series’ character. That establishes the i3’s place in the 3 Series line; it does not establish that it will take the i4’s place.
BMW says i3 production began at its Munich plant in August 2026. The company also says that plant will produce exclusively fully electric vehicles from 2027. The plant change describes where and how BMW will build vehicles, not a discontinuation date for every current model.
BMW says Neue Klasse technologies are planned for 40 new models and upcoming updates by 2027. That is a rollout across models and updates, not a promise of 40 entirely new nameplates.

What the Munich plant information says about the i4
BMW’s Plant Munich page says the i3 replaces the current BMW 3 Series Sedan from October 2026. The same page lists the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and the all-electric i4 among the plant’s models. This does not guarantee that the i4 will remain in production indefinitely, but it does not support a claim that BMW has announced its replacement or final production date.
The most accurate distinction is between two lineups: BMW has announced an electric 3 Series sedan, while the i4 remains listed in the Munich production program. BMW has not said in the cited announcements that the i3 is a successor to the i4.

When the i3 is expected and orderable
Availability timing depends on market. BMW USA says the i3 Sedan will be available in the United States in 2027, with other variants following later. BMW USA says orders for the i3 50 xDrive open in Q4 2026. These dates are US-specific and should not be treated as a global launch or order schedule.
For buyers elsewhere, the cited global announcement confirms Munich production began in August 2026, but does not establish each country’s delivery or ordering dates. Check the local BMW site or retailer for regional timing.

What BMW says about i3 range
BMW Group’s March 2026 announcement gives an “up to 900 kilometres” WLTP range headline. Its detailed provisional figures for the i3 50 xDrive are 758–912 km WLTP and combined energy consumption of 16.1–13.4 kWh/100 km. BMW labels those technical figures provisional; they are manufacturer figures, not independent test results.
BMW USA lists an estimated range of 440 miles. The US page cautions that actual range varies with configuration and conditions, and notes that new model-year EV ranges may not yet be EPA-certified. The US estimate and WLTP figures use different regional contexts and should not be compared as though they were the same measurement.

BMW’s announcement describes the i3’s range, display and operating concept, and “Heart of Joy” driving system as part of the Neue Klasse package. Its description of a “unique driving experience” is BMW’s characterization, not an independent assessment.

BMW’s launch material alone cannot establish which car is the better buy, or whether one offers better value. That verdict requires comparable regional prices and specifications for the versions a buyer can actually order.
