There is no verified evidence that Insanity has reached 400 mph. The 400 mph figure is a projection from its builder, Canadian enthusiast Ryan McQueen, and the fastest specific run in published reporting is a claim of 134 mph (215.6 km/h) from a July 2024 air-show video, reported by New Atlas in September 2024. Coverage in 2026 still repeats the 400 mph goal, but it does not report a newer verified run.
What Insanity is
Insanity is a one-off, home-built jet dragster. It uses a Ferrari Enzo-inspired fiberglass body on a chassis McQueen built by hand, with a 130-inch wheelbase according to New Atlas, and it is powered by two Rolls-Royce Viper jet engines. It is not a production Ferrari or a commercial dragster model, so there is no factory specification or independent certification to fall back on. Every performance number attached to the car comes from McQueen or from reporting that repeats him.
The performance figures are builder claims
New Atlas listed the following figures as McQueen’s claims and said it had not seen them verified by an official source.
| Figure | Value as reported | Status in published reporting |
|---|---|---|
| Thrust | 14,000 lb from the two engines | Builder claim (New Atlas, September 2024); not independently measured |
| Power | 18,000 hp (13,442.5 kW) from the twin afterburning engines | Builder claim (New Atlas, September 2024); not independently measured |
| Vehicle weight | 3,800 lb (1,723.6 kg) | Builder figure (New Atlas, September 2024); no weighing certificate reported |
| Acceleration | An estimated 6 g | Builder estimate (New Atlas, September 2024) |
| Fuel use | 400 liters (105.6 U.S. gallons) in two and a half minutes | Builder claim (New Atlas, September 2024) |
| Projected top speed | 400 mph (643.7 km/h) | Projection, not a demonstrated speed |
| Best reported run | 134 mph (215.6 km/h) | Builder-reported from a July 2024 air-show video; not presented as a certified record |
The 400 mph target has a longer history than the current coverage suggests. In 2020, The Drive reported McQueen’s calculation that Insanity could exceed 400 mph “once it’s completely dialed in.” That wording makes the speed conditional on further development, and it has not yet been followed by a published run at that level.

What stands between 134 mph and 400 mph
New Atlas identified three concrete problems that a run at the target speed would have to solve, and concluded the car needs more testing before the goal can be reached.
Heat and fire risk
Two jet engines running at the power McQueen describes produce heat and exhaust that a fiberglass body and a steel tube frame must tolerate. New Atlas flagged heat management and fire risk as an unresolved issue. Published reporting does not describe a completed fire-containment or heat-shielding program for the car.
Rank #2
Tires
New Atlas also named finding tires capable of the intended speed as a challenge. No verified tire specification or speed rating for Insanity appears in published reporting, so a tire setup for 400 mph cannot be treated as established.
Driver exposure to acceleration
The projected 6 g is an estimate, and managing g-forces on the driver is one of the three challenges New Atlas raised. Reporting does not describe a driver-restraint or seat design validated at that load.

Fuel endurance
McQueen’s stated consumption of 400 liters in two and a half minutes means a run is short but fuel-heavy. That figure is his own and has not been checked against a timed run.
The build history and why the dates differ
Accounts of how long the car took to build vary because they were published at different times and may describe different milestones.

| Publication | Date | Build timeline stated |
|---|---|---|
| Road & Track | 2016 | Project began in 2004; fiberglass body and steel tube frame; McQueen taught himself the fabrication skills |
| The Drive | Later coverage (date not stated in the reporting consulted) | McQueen says the build took 14 years |
| New Atlas | September 2024 | Describes a 17-year build |
McQueen’s own explanation for the long timeline is direct: “The car took 14 years to build because I had to teach myself all the skills required as I progressed in the project.” The difference between 14 and 17 years most likely reflects when each account was written and what each counted as finished, not a dispute about the facts.

A reader evaluating a new report should check three things before treating a speed as real:

- Perfect gift: Model building creates special moments for friends and family. Assemble your Top Fuel Dragster and enjoy drag racing vibes anytime, anywhere
- Measured or projected: a timed run on a recorded course is a measurement; a calculation of what the car could do “once it’s dialed in” is a projection.
- Who timed it: a figure from the builder’s own video is a claim until an independent timing system or an official body confirms it.
- What testing came after: a single high-speed pass does not show the heat, tire, and driver-load problems have been solved; repeated runs with documented inspection would.
What is not known
Published reporting does not establish that Insanity has made a run faster than 134 mph. The newest 2026 coverage that surfaced repeats the 400 mph aspiration without reporting a new verified result, so the honest status is that the car’s demonstrated top speed is the builder-reported 134 mph from 2024, and the 400 mph figure remains an unproven target. Any faster run would need an independent timing record and a description of the safety and tire work behind it before it could be treated as confirmed.
The car is also not a useful comparison point for purchasable vehicles. No production model or commercial kit offers the same performance, and the aircraft engines, high-speed tires, and driver safety equipment involved would need specific availability and compatibility information that the published reporting does not provide.
