Yes. A failed alternator diode can let current leak from the battery through the alternator while the vehicle is parked, yet leave enough charging output for the alternator to charge when the engine is running. That combination is possible, not guaranteed: behavior depends on the failure and vehicle design. A charging battery does not rule out a parked drain, and a drain alone does not prove the alternator is responsible.
How one diode fault can cause both symptoms
The alternator’s rectifier uses diodes to convert alternator output for the vehicle’s DC electrical system and help prevent current from flowing the wrong way when the engine is off. A diode that fails in a way that permits leakage can create a key-off current path through the alternator and gradually discharge the battery. Depending on which diode or regulator component has failed, the alternator may still produce some charging output—or may produce reduced or abnormal output.
These symptoms do not occur together in every diode failure. HELLA lists defective diodes among possible causes of a discharged battery due to quiescent current, while a narrowly scoped BMW bulletin describes a regulator-diode fault in which the charge lamp illuminated even though charging continued. The bulletin does not establish that every failed diode leaves charging unaffected.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
- A battery that charges while driving does not rule out a parked draw. It shows only that the charging system is providing some output under the conditions tested; it does not establish that the alternator is free of a key-off leak.
- A battery that goes flat does not identify the alternator as the cause. Battery condition, poor connections, and other key-off current paths can also be involved. ATD’s tester manual notes that low charging voltage can indicate a bad diode and/or poor connections.
- A single DC voltage reading is not a diode diagnosis. A charging-system test can assess output, while a diode check or suitable ripple-waveform test can look for diode-related faults. Use the procedure and specifications for the vehicle.
How to diagnose a suspected diode-related drain
- Check the battery first. Verify its state and condition before interpreting charging or drain results. A weak or discharged battery can complicate diagnosis; HELLA also advises checking battery condition when a post-charge measurement remains unsatisfactory.
- Inspect connections and grounds. Check battery and alternator connections for poor contact or resistance. A connection problem can mimic or contribute to charging trouble.
- Test charging output to the vehicle-maker’s specifications. DENSO cautions that charging-test standards differ by manufacturer. Do not treat one voltage range as universal.
- Check diode condition with suitable equipment. A capable charging-system tester may support output and diode checks. Acura’s 2010 MDX service procedure, for example, uses an OTC3131 tester, checks that vehicle’s voltage and amperage criteria, and then checks diode condition. If the tester reports BAD, the procedure directs repair or replacement followed by a retest. Those criteria apply to that procedure, not to all vehicles.
- Consider a ripple-waveform test. BMW service information for the 1987 528e describes a healthy waveform as roughly even rolling hills and bad diodes as obvious dropouts. This illustrates a diagnostic method; it does not supply a universal threshold for modern vehicles.
- If the battery drains while parked, locate the key-off current path. Follow the manufacturer’s safe parasitic-current procedure and isolate circuits methodically. If the procedure calls for isolating the alternator, follow the vehicle service information.
- Repair only after confirming the fault. Identify the correct vehicle-specific alternator or regulator before replacement, then retest as directed by the service procedure.
Important safety point when testing
Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running. DENSO warns that doing so can cause diode failure. Use the vehicle’s service procedure for testing and circuit isolation; if you are unsure how to perform a key-off current test safely, have a qualified technician diagnose it.

What the service examples establish
BMW’s November 2005 bulletin, SI B 12 22 05, applies to specified models fitted with Valeo 120- or 140-amp alternators. It attributes an illuminated charge lamp to a faulty diode in the alternator regulator and says charging continued. Its statement—“Although the light is illuminated the vehicles charging system continues to charge and battery state is not affected.”—is specific to that fault and vehicle scope, not a rule for every alternator.
Acura’s 2010 MDX procedure and BMW’s 1987 528e waveform guidance show why diagnosis should use more than a basic DC voltage check. HELLA’s symptom guidance supports considering defective diodes among possible causes of quiescent-current battery discharge, while DENSO’s guidance underscores the need for vehicle-specific specifications. None of these examples establishes how often diode faults cause parasitic drains.
