Mercedes-Benz said the G-Class family will expand with a smaller version. The company’s statement does not say whether that vehicle will be electric-only, offer combustion power, or come with multiple powertrains. It also does not give a launch date. Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s announcement therefore confirms the smaller G-Class plan, not its final technical specification.

Autocar reported that the smaller model was initially described as electric-only, but was expected to be offered with a choice of electric and combustion power. Autocar also reported an expected 2027 arrival. Treat both the lineup and timing as reported plans, not confirmed production specifications or a firm Mercedes-Benz launch date.
That reporting means the headline claim that the baby G-Class will be electric only is not established by the available official announcement and may be out of date. A hybrid version has not been confirmed in the information reviewed; the reported alternative is combustion power, without further detail on the type of engine or whether it would be paired with an electric system.

How the planned smaller G-Class differs from the electric G 580
The existing G 580 with EQ Technology is the fully electric version of the full-size G-Class. It is a separate vehicle from the planned smaller model, and its figures should not be used as specifications for the baby G-Class.

What the full-size electric G-Class can do—and what that does not tell us
The G 580 offers a useful example of Mercedes-Benz’s current electric G-Class technology, but none of these figures establishes what the smaller model will use.
