The BYD Seagull launched in China in 2025 at RMB 69,800–85,800, making it a notably low-priced electric car in that market. A temporary promotion cut the starting price to RMB 55,800, but it was scheduled to end on June 30, 2025. Neither price proves the Seagull was the world’s cheapest EV: that depends on the country, date, price type and vehicles being compared.
What did the BYD Seagull cost in China in 2025?
At its August 2024 launch as a 2025 model, the Seagull had three China-market trims priced at RMB 69,800, RMB 75,800 and RMB 85,800, according to CnEVPost and CarNewsChina. CnEVPost gave approximate US-dollar equivalents of $9,650, $10,490 and $11,870 at the time; exchange rates change, so those are not current quotes.
In May 2025, CnEVPost reported a limited-time campaign price starting at RMB 55,800, reduced from the RMB 69,800 guide price. The offer was scheduled to run through June 30, 2025, so it should not be treated as an available price today. See CnEVPost’s campaign report.
Was it the cheapest electric car in 2025?
The available prices support calling the Seagull one of China’s strikingly low-priced EVs, but they do not establish a worldwide number-one ranking. There is no comprehensive global comparison here of every electric car on sale in 2025. A claim that the Seagull was “the cheapest electric car” therefore needs a defined market, date and comparison set.

Even BYD’s export-channel pricing is a narrower comparison. A BYD Global Export-branded page updated July 31, 2026 lists factory prices of ¥69,800–89,800 (approximately $9,694–$12,472 FOB) and describes the Seagull as the lowest-priced vehicle in its listed BYD export lineup. The page specifies that freight, insurance, duty, VAT and clearance are additional, so these figures are not delivered retail prices. Why can the price be very different outside China?
The China launch price is not a reliable estimate of what a buyer would pay in another country. In 2024, the Associated Press reported that the car was sold as the Dolphin Mini in some overseas markets and cost about $21,000 in four Latin American countries. That is historical reporting, not evidence of current availability or pricing. Read the AP report.

Market-specific taxes, import duties, freight, insurance, clearance, registration and local equipment can all affect the final price. Compare delivered consumer prices in the same country rather than setting a Chinese guide price or FOB factory amount beside an overseas retail quote.

Prices and battery sizes are from the August 2024 launch reports by CnEVPost and CarNewsChina. The range values are CLTC ratings for China, not real-world range estimates or directly interchangeable EPA or WLTP figures. Later database entries include a 405 km version introduced in June 2025, so they should not be confused with the three-trim launch lineup. CarNewsChina Data lists its trim-specific specifications.

Before comparing the Seagull with another electric car, pin down what the quoted price and vehicle actually represent:

- Market and date: Use prices from the same country and period; promotions and exchange rates change.
- Price basis: Separate temporary campaign prices, guide or list prices, factory/FOB amounts and delivered retail totals.
- Vehicle and equipment: Compare the same class of vehicle and account for trim, battery and included equipment.
- Range basis: Keep range-test cycles distinct; a CLTC figure is not an EPA or WLTP rating.
- Costs and availability: Check whether the model can actually be bought locally and whether the quote includes taxes, duty, freight, registration and other charges.
On the evidence available, the precise answer is that the 2025 Seagull launched at a very low price in China, with a short-lived lower campaign price. A global “cheapest” title is not established.
