A camouflaged BYD Tang DM-i was reported in China in May 2024, but the report did not confirm that the SUV would launch in two configurations. Its 120 kW and 160 kW motor figures described the Qin L, not the Tang DM-i. Later BYD product pages list Tang DM-i specifications that vary by market.
What the camouflage sighting showed
On May 27, 2024, Gizmochina reported that a Tang DM-i had been spotted wearing camouflage. The report said the vehicle’s headlights had not yet been fitted, making it difficult to assess the finished front end. It treated possible fascia changes as uncertain; the sighting was not a BYD production reveal or official announcement.
The report said BYD planned to unveil its fifth-generation DM technology on May 28, 2024, initially for the Qin L and Haibao 06 DM-i. It suggested the Tang DM-i might also receive the technology, with a 1.5-liter engine and an electric drive motor, but presented that powertrain as expected rather than confirmed. Were two Tang DM-i configurations confirmed?
No. The two electric-motor peak outputs in the Gizmochina report—120 kW and 160 kW—were attributed to Qin L versions. They are not evidence that BYD announced two Tang DM-i configurations. The report’s headline and subhead risk blurring the distinction between the two vehicles.

BYD’s product pages provide later, market-specific figures. They should not be treated as interchangeable: the listed ranges differ, and the pages concern different markets. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.

What buyers should take from the report
The 2024 camouflage story is useful as an early sighting, not as a definitive specification sheet. For a specific Tang DM-i on sale where you live, check the local BYD page or dealer for the model year, trim, range test basis, powertrain output, charging compatibility, seating, price and availability. Those details can differ across markets and may change; the Philippines page, for example, offers quote and test-drive actions.
