will.i.am’s Notable Cars: What’s Known About His Garage and Reported Costs

The reported $900,000 Beetle build figure and $700,000 DeLorean value claim are historical, not current appraisals. Available sources do not establish a definitive top eight.

The most striking reported figure tied to a car associated with will.i.am is $900,000: Jalopnik reported in 2013 that this was the cost of building his heavily modified 1958 Volkswagen Beetle. The same coverage reported a $700,000 value claim for a custom DeLorean. Neither number is a current appraisal, and available reporting does not establish a definitive list of eight cars or a reliable ranking by value.

Why there is no reliable “most expensive eight” ranking

Published roundups do not agree on which vehicles belong in will.i.am’s collection or how many cars it contains. One 2024 roundup lists nine, while other coverage gives different selections. The available reporting also does not provide comparable, independently verified valuations for the vehicles. A ranked top eight would therefore suggest certainty the evidence does not support.

It helps to distinguish three different kinds of figures: a reported custom-build cost, a value claim attributed to will.i.am, and a vehicle’s market price or current appraisal. The two prominent dollar amounts below are historical reporting from 2013, not confirmed purchase prices or present-day values.

The cars with the clearest reported cost figures

Custom 1958 Volkswagen Beetle: $900,000 reported build cost

Jalopnik reported in February 2013 that the extensively modified Beetle was said to have cost $900,000 to build. Work reportedly began in 2009, and the car was not yet finished at the time of that report. Treat the amount as a historical reported build figure, not as a current valuation or a confirmed resale price. Jalopnik’s 2013 report on the custom Beetle.

Custom DeLorean DMC-12: $700,000 reported value claim

In the same 2013 coverage, Jalopnik reported that will.i.am had described his custom DeLorean as worth $700,000. The report clarified that the car was a DeLorean rather than a vehicle built from scratch. This is a historical value claim, not evidence of a completed sale or a current appraisal. The Flip: a Mercedes-AMG collaboration

Mercedes-Benz says The Flip is a one-off project based on an extensively modified Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, developed with will.i.am. The company announced it in 2022 as part of a STEAM-education mission. Its official announcement does not give a reliable value for the one-off, so it cannot be placed in a price ranking. Mercedes-AMG GT C and G 63: dated collection reporting

A Mercedes-Benz profile reported a GT C and a G 63 in will.i.am’s collection when the profile was published. That is evidence of reported ownership at that time, not confirmation that he owns either vehicle now. Mercedes-Benz’s profile of will.i.am.

Other cars mentioned in collection roundups

Secondary roundups have named vehicles including a Bentley Continental GT, McLaren MP4-12C, Tesla models, a Corvette and a Lexus. The lists differ, and the available reporting does not independently corroborate a consistent current inventory or vehicle-by-vehicle values. These mentions are not enough to establish a definitive eight-car list. A collection roundup illustrating the variation.

What can be said about the most expensive car?

Among the cost claims cited here, the custom Beetle has the largest reported figure: Jalopnik’s 2013 account put its build cost at $900,000. That makes it the strongest reported high-cost claim in this material, not a verified statement that it is currently will.i.am’s most valuable car. A build cost, a quoted value and a present-day market valuation answer different questions.

In a 2013 Guardian Q&A, will.i.am said, “I spend money on things to make – such as the car I made.” The remark reflects the custom-build aspect of his car projects; it does not verify the amounts or establish the current contents of his garage. The Guardian’s 2013 Q&A.
