The 2025 U.S.–South Korea tariff deal was reported to lower the tariff on South Korean-made cars and parts from 25% to 15%. That may ease pressure on import costs, but it does not guarantee lower prices—or a lasting price freeze—for Hyundai or Kia buyers. Hyundai said in April 2025 that it would not raise U.S. prices “right now”; that statement was limited to the moment, and it did not cover Kia.
What did the tariff deal change?
South Korea’s government reported that the deal would reduce tariffs on Korea-made cars and parts from 25% to 15%. The Federal Register’s implementation material describes a 15% combined-duty framework for covered South Korean goods when the otherwise applicable ordinary tariff is below 15%, with a different treatment when the ordinary rate is already 15% or higher. The details matter: this is customs treatment, not a rebate paid to car buyers.
A tariff can affect the cost of importing a vehicle or component, but it does not mechanically set a vehicle’s U.S. sticker price. Manufacturers may absorb costs, adjust prices, or respond in other ways; the deal alone does not establish which choice Hyundai or Kia made for a particular model. Will Hyundai prices go up because of tariffs?
On April 3, 2025, Hyundai Motor president José Muñoz said: “What I can tell you is that we are not going to increase prices right now.” The key qualification is “right now”: it was a statement about Hyundai’s immediate pricing intentions at that time, not a permanent commitment. It also does not establish that prices fell. Yonhap reported the statement on April 3, 2025.

Will Kia prices go up?
The reported Hyundai statement was made by Hyundai Motor’s president and does not establish Kia’s pricing plans. The tariff deal may affect costs for Korea-made Kia vehicles or parts, but no verified average retail-price change caused by the agreement is established here. For a Kia purchase, the relevant evidence is the current written quote for the exact model and trim—not Hyundai’s earlier comment.
Does the tariff apply to every Hyundai and Kia?
No single rate can be assumed for every vehicle a U.S. buyer might consider. The deal concerns covered goods from South Korea, while customs treatment can depend on the good’s origin and applicable tariff rules. A vehicle assembled outside South Korea is not shown by the headline tariff change alone to face the same treatment as a Korea-made vehicle. Nor does an announced U.S. factory investment prove that every model sold under Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis is assembled domestically.

Hyundai Motor Group announced a $21 billion U.S. investment plan covering 2025–2028. The company described $9 billion for production capacity, with annual capacity of 1.2 million vehicles targeted across Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis, and $6 billion for component localization and related supply-chain investment. Those are company plans, not confirmation of the final assembly origin of a specific vehicle. Hyundai Motor Group announced the plan on March 25, 2025.
What is the tariff rate now?
The available dated reporting does not establish the rate in force on October 7, 2026. The Associated Press reported on January 26, 2026, that President Trump had threatened to raise tariffs on South Korean autos and other goods amid a dispute over legislative approval. That report establishes a threat, not whether it took effect or what rate ultimately applied. The Associated Press report is dated January 26, 2026.

The tariff deal is not enough to determine whether waiting will save you money. Compare the actual out-the-door offers available for the vehicle you want; incentives and dealer pricing can vary by model, trim, location, and date. Do not treat the reported tariff reduction as a promised MSRP cut or as evidence that a future increase is inevitable.

- Identify the exact vehicle. Compare the same model year, trim, and equipment so the offers are genuinely comparable.
- Check final assembly origin. Use the vehicle-specific information available from the seller or manufacturer rather than inferring origin from the brand or the announced investment plan.
- Compare current incentives. Record which rebates or financing offers apply to your purchase and when they expire; a temporary incentive can matter more to your deal than an uncertain tariff pass-through.
- Get written, date-specific quotes. Ask for the full price, fees, add-ons, and incentive assumptions in writing from more than one dealer.
