In August 2024, media reports said Tesla planned to begin building a seven-seat Model Y at its Shanghai factory in October, but the same coverage included contrary information: a plant source said production had not started, and a separate report said Tesla denied a domestic launch. Tesla later disclosed a different China-market vehicle, the six-seat, three-row Model Y L. That later model does not confirm the earlier seven-seat claim.
What the August 2024 report claimed
On August 29, 2024, CarNewsChina reported that domestic media said Tesla planned to start mass production of a seven-seat Model Y at Gigafactory Shanghai in October, with China and Europe mentioned as intended markets. The report was about a planned production start—not proof that production began or that vehicles reached customers. CarNewsChina’s August 29 report also described conflicting information: an unnamed source at the Shanghai plant said production had not already begun, and Shanghai Securities News subsequently reported that Tesla denied a domestic seven-seat launch.
How the later Model Y L differs
In September 2024, CnEVPost summarized Reuters reporting about a separate plan: a six-seat Model Y for China, with production expected from late 2025. Its account also recapped the conflicting seven-seat reports. CnEVPost’s September 3, 2024 report therefore does not turn the earlier seven-seat plan into a confirmed launch.
Tesla’s Q3 2025 update described the China-market Model Y L as a longer-wheelbase Model Y with six seats and three rows. The company’s disclosure confirms that configuration, not a seven-seat version. Tesla’s Q3 2025 investor update, published October 22, 2025 is the primary source for that description.

What Shanghai production records confirm
Shanghai Municipal Government reported that Tesla began mass production of the refreshed Model Y at its Shanghai factory in February 2025. That report concerns the refreshed Model Y generally; it does not establish seven-seat production. The government’s February 19, 2025 report is distinct from its later account of the Model Y L.
On December 9, 2025, the same government site reported that a Model Y L was the Shanghai factory’s four-millionth vehicle and identified the L as a six-seat SUV assembled there. What remains unconfirmed
The cited sources do not establish whether a seven-seat Model Y entered production or launched in China, whether that version was exported to Europe, or its present availability. They also do not establish the Model Y L’s current pricing, orderability, or export availability as of October 7, 2026. The safe distinction is between a disputed seven-seat plan reported in 2024 and the six-seat Model Y L documented later.
