Compatibility is determined by the exact model, trim, VIN, software build, language package, map provider, data connection and account provisioning. A car sold in Europe under the same badge may contain different hardware and software from a domestic Chinese version.
Before paying or importing, obtain written confirmation tied to the vehicle you will receive. Demonstrate the functions on that car, not on a European brochure model or a different export trim.

What determines whether the car works in Europe?
Think of an imported EV as several separate systems rather than one “connected” feature. A vehicle can have a good local map but no European app, or support phone projection while its embedded modem cannot obtain service abroad. Check each layer independently:

- Language: dashboard menus, navigation, voice assistant and owner app may be configured separately.
- Maps: the installed map database, European place search, live traffic, charging locations and EV-specific route planning are distinct capabilities.
- Apps: the app store, Google Play certification and available third-party applications depend on the software build and region.
- Phone projection: wired or wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay require the appropriate head unit, USB port, wireless hardware and certification.
- Connectivity: an embedded SIM, roaming arrangement, Wi-Fi connection or phone tethering must provide data in the countries where you drive.
- Accounts and services: the manufacturer’s app, remote locking, climate control, charging and location functions may be restricted by account country or vehicle-market code.
- Support: updates, warranty repairs, parts and roadside assistance for a domestic-market import are not automatically covered by a local dealer.
Google itself says availability for cars with Google built-in varies by manufacturer, language, region and data plan. Its guidance therefore explains how a compatible car is set up; it does not certify an unspecified Chinese-market vehicle.

Will Google Maps and Google built-in work?
Google built-in is a vehicle certification, not a country switch
On a compatible vehicle, Google’s setup guidance says drivers can use Google Maps, Google Play and Google Assistant or Gemini. Signing in with a Google account is required for personal features, and a mobile-data plan is recommended for the best experience. Some applications and functions may be unavailable when the car is offline or the user is signed out. Read the full requirements at Google’s “Set up your car with Google built-in” guidance.
The important qualification is “compatible vehicle.” Installing a Google account, changing the phone’s region or crossing a border cannot turn a head unit that lacks Google services into a certified Google-built-in system. Ask the seller to show Google Play opening, account sign-in, map search and route calculation on the exact VIN and software version.
European country availability still requires vehicle-level confirmation
Google’s country list includes Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, among other European markets. The list at Google’s country-availability page describes where cars with Google built in are offered. It does not prove that a privately imported domestic Chinese car has the necessary certification, modem provisioning or data plan in one of those countries.
Native maps can be different from Google Maps
A Chinese-market EV may have a perfectly functional native navigation system, but its map provider, search index, traffic feed and charging database may be intended for China. Determine whether the installed map covers every country you expect to visit and whether it supports European addresses, local-language search, live traffic, charging stops and energy-aware route planning. A map that displays Europe without live data or charging information may not meet the same needs as a fully localized system.

What the XPENG L03 example proves
In an announcement dated July 16, 2026, XPENG said its overseas Google Maps integration uses Google Maps Auto SDK to create an in-car experience while retaining a custom XPENG interface. The company described traffic-aware guidance, EV energy estimation, trip planning and place search, and said drivers would not need to download Google Maps to the vehicle or rely on phone screen mirroring. XPENG identified the L03 as the first model to receive the upgraded overseas experience. See the announcement at XPENG’s July 16, 2026 release.
This is evidence of a model-specific overseas implementation, not proof that every XPENG, every trim or any domestic Chinese-market EV has the same software. The announcement’s quoted statement from Jorgen Behrens, Google Maps Automotive vice president and general manager, says: “In less than a year, XPENG has successfully deployed a refreshed navigation experience, seamlessly combining their distinct design with our navigation expertise via Google Maps’ Auto SDK.” Treat the L03 configuration as a precedent to verify, not as a transferable feature.
Can Android Auto or Apple CarPlay be used?
Phone projection is a separate question from Google built-in and from the car’s native map. Verify whether the exact vehicle supports wired or wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay or neither. Confirm the required phone operating-system version, USB port and trim level. A European manufacturer’s support page may list projection for selected model years and equipment, but that cannot establish support on an unrelated China-market vehicle. The Mitsubishi Motors Europe connectivity page illustrates why these features must be checked by model and equipment.
Ask the seller to pair your own phone and complete a route before purchase. A menu icon labelled “projection” is not enough: the phone must actually connect, display navigation and audio, and reconnect after the car is restarted. If only wired projection is supported, test the specified USB port; charging-only ports will not work. If wireless projection is promised, test it without a cable and verify that the car’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth pairing remain stable.

Is the embedded SIM or data connection usable in Europe?
Maps, voice assistants, traffic, remote controls and over-the-air updates may all depend on connectivity, but the available evidence does not establish modem bands, SIM or eSIM roaming, carrier provisioning, data-plan ownership or OTA reachability for an unspecified vehicle. A car can have a modem physically installed yet lack a European roaming agreement or an activated account.
Get written answers to these points:
- Is data supplied by an embedded SIM, a roaming SIM, Wi-Fi or phone tethering?
- Which European countries and mobile networks are supported?
- Which cellular bands does the exact hardware use?
- Who pays for the data plan, for how long and after any introductory allowance ends?
- Do navigation, voice, remote controls and OTA downloads continue when the car uses a personal hotspot?
Do not infer European connectivity from a successful showroom connection in China. Have the supplier demonstrate the car after it has connected to a network in your destination country, or provide a written carrier and provisioning statement for the exact VIN.
Will the manufacturer’s phone app work?
The owner app may be region-locked independently of the dashboard. Pairing can require a vehicle-market code, a local account, a phone number from a supported country or a local app-store version. Ask whether the European app can pair with this domestic VIN and whether it provides the functions you need: remote lock and unlock, climate preconditioning, charging control, battery status, location and service booking.
Request a live demonstration using your own phone and a newly created account in the country where the car will be registered. A screenshot or a demonstration with the seller’s account does not prove that your account region will be accepted. Also ask what happens if the vehicle changes ownership, the original Chinese account is closed or the manufacturer changes its server policy.

Updates, warranty and roadside help are separate from app compatibility
An imported car may drive normally while lacking a supported path for software updates. Ask whether OTA packages are delivered to the domestic build in Europe, whether updates can be installed manually by an authorized technician and whether updates change language, maps or projection features. Confirm who will diagnose a failed update and whether parts are stocked locally.
European sales announcements show that official support is expanding, but they do not cover every domestic import. On March 26, 2026, Geely announced E5 and Starray EM-i launches in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, with European parts logistics, localized warranty programs and roadside assistance for those named markets. NIO announced distribution plans for Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Denmark with local partners on June 17, 2025. These announcements describe European-market operations; they are not a guarantee that a separately imported Chinese-market variant receives the same warranty, software support or connected services. Send the following questions to the manufacturer, importer or seller and keep the written replies with the sales contract. Replace general model names with the exact VIN, trim and software build.

- Which app store and third-party apps are available on this software build? Is Google Play certified and usable?
- Which European countries are covered by the built-in map? Does it provide live traffic, charging stops and EV energy-aware routing?
- Does the exact trim support wired Android Auto, wireless Android Auto, wired Apple CarPlay or wireless Apple CarPlay? Which phone operating systems and ports are required?
- How does the car obtain data in Europe: embedded SIM, roaming SIM, Wi-Fi or phone tethering?
- Which local carriers and cellular bands are supported, and who pays for the data plan?
- Can the local manufacturer app pair with this VIN and your account country? Which remote functions are enabled?
- Are OTA updates, warranty repairs, parts and roadside assistance available for this market version in your country?
- Can the supplier demonstrate every requested function on the actual vehicle before payment?
Put any promised feature in the contract, including language support, projection, app pairing, map coverage and warranty responsibility. “The European version has it” is not evidence about a Chinese-market build.

How to compare two imported EVs
Use the same checks for both cars and weight them according to your priorities. A phone-based map may be acceptable for one buyer, while remote charging control or guaranteed OTA support is essential for another.

If a feature is missing after import
No Google services or European map
Ask the importer whether an official software package exists for your VIN. Do not assume that installing an unofficial application will provide certification, live traffic, account support or future updates. If no supported package exists, plan to use phone navigation and verify that the phone can obtain data independently.
Projection will not connect
Test the required USB port, cable, phone operating-system version and wireless pairing procedure stated by the manufacturer. If the exact trim was never certified for Android Auto or CarPlay, a cable or adapter cannot create the missing vehicle functionality.

The owner app cannot pair
Request confirmation of the supported account country and vehicle-market code. If the local app is unavailable, get a written statement about which remote functions, if any, can be operated through another official channel.
Remote controls or updates stop working
Check whether the embedded data plan is active and whether the car is roaming on a supported network. Escalate through the importer or manufacturer with the VIN, software build and account region; a phone hotspot may restore internet access for some functions but cannot fix server-side authorization or warranty limitations.
Practical fallback: use the phone without pretending it fixes the car
If the vehicle lacks a usable native map or screen projection, a securely mounted phone can provide navigation. A mount does not add Google services, cellular capability, map coverage, CarPlay or Android Auto, and it cannot repair unsupported remote controls or OTA connectivity. Position it without obstructing the driver’s view and follow the road-safety rules in every country you visit.
Bottom line for buyers
Buy only after the exact Chinese-market EV demonstrates the European functions you require. Confirm maps, projection, app pairing, data service, updates and support as separate contractual items. If the supplier cannot provide VIN-specific evidence, assume that compatibility is uncertain and value the car on the basis of the functions you can independently verify rather than the equipment list of a European-market sibling.
