Lewis Hamilton’s rise from karting in Stevenage to Formula One’s most decorated drivers was built on standout talent, family support and a pivotal early connection with McLaren. He made his F1 debut in 2007, won his first world title the following year and has seven Drivers’ Championships. The phrase “wild and free” comes from advice attributed to Hamilton in a 2018 feature; it is not the title of a book.
How Hamilton’s racing story began
Born in Stevenage, England, in 1985, Hamilton began karting as a child. Formula 1’s Hall of Fame biography recounts that, at age 10, he approached McLaren boss Ron Dennis at a motorsport awards event. Hamilton later recalled saying, “Hello Mr. Dennis, I’m Lewis Hamilton and one day I’d like to race for your team.” He asked for Dennis’s autograph and phone number; Dennis wrote in Hamilton’s book, “Call me in nine years.” Formula 1’s Hall of Fame biography
The meeting was more than an inspiring childhood anecdote. About three years later, Dennis offered support that helped fund Hamilton’s next stage in racing. Hamilton advanced through karting and junior single-seater categories before joining McLaren’s Formula One team in 2007.
Family support behind the progress
Hamilton’s early career required substantial commitment from his family. His father, Anthony, supported his racing while the family faced financial strain; the AFP-origin feature republished by Scroll.in says Anthony held multiple jobs. That context matters: the story is not simply one of an individual overcoming hardship. Hamilton’s driving ability was central, but family effort and McLaren’s backing helped keep the path open. From F1 rookie to seven-time champion
A remarkable first season
Hamilton’s 2007 debut season made him an immediate title contender. Formula 1’s historical account records four race victories and a second-place championship finish, one point behind Kimi Räikkönen. In 2008, Hamilton won his first Drivers’ Championship.
Championship years
After joining Mercedes, Hamilton added six titles: 2014, 2015 and each season from 2017 through 2020. Formula 1 lists seven championship seasons in all: 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Formula 1’s Hall of Fame biography

What “wild and free” means in the story
The phrase comes from Hamilton’s advice to young drivers, as attributed by the 2018 Scroll.in feature: “You need to let it run wild and free and discover yourself. It is all about discovery. And only you can do it.” In context, the words encourage young drivers to explore and develop their own approach. They are not the name of a Hamilton book.
Hamilton’s current team and career status
Formula 1’s current driver profile lists Hamilton as a Ferrari driver and describes 2025 as a difficult first season with the team. It also notes his first Grand Prix win for Ferrari in 2026. Team and season information can change, so consult Formula 1’s current Hamilton profile for the latest standings and career totals.

A first-person account of his early years
Readers who want Hamilton’s own account of his beginnings can look for Lewis Hamilton: My Story. Christchurch City Libraries describes it as covering his life, home life, early years and first F1 season. Published before his later championships and Ferrari chapter, it is an early-career account rather than a complete record of his subsequent career.
