Why are cars moving from analog gauges to digital dashboards?
Analog gauges use fixed layouts; a digital instrument cluster renders information on a screen, so its graphics and layout can be changed in software. That flexibility lets automakers present vehicle information in different ways. It does not, by itself, prove that a digital layout is safer or that every car will adopt a full-width display.

LCD technology is also changing rather than disappearing. Omdia says low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT LCD offers higher resolution and brightness, lower power consumption and stronger touch integration than older amorphous-silicon (a-Si) TFT LCD. Counterpoint attributes LCD’s continued prevalence in part to its mature supply chain and large production capacity. OLED is expanding in premium cockpit programs, while MiniLED LCD is also gaining share, according to Counterpoint.

What is the difference between a cluster, center display and HUD?

The roles can complement one another instead of being combined in a single panel. Omdia describes the center screen as an integration hub, the cluster as a source of real-time driving information and the HUD as an extension of forward situational awareness. Mobility Global’s survey likewise associates clusters with vehicle status, center displays with entertainment, communication and navigation, and HUDs with guidance, vehicle data and warnings.

How large are car displays becoming?
The available figures describe different measures, so screen area, vehicle sales and display shipments should not be read as interchangeable.
- Center-display area: Counterpoint reported that total automotive center information display (CID) area grew 19% year over year in 2025. LCD remained by far the dominant CID technology by area; OLED accounted for less than 2%, while MiniLED LCD gained share. These are Counterpoint’s findings reported in 2026.
- Display sizes in passenger-vehicle sales: Counterpoint reported that 15–20-inch CIDs appeared in 11% of passenger-vehicle sales in 2025, up from 7% in 2024. The 10–15-inch range represented 60% in 2025, up from 54% in 2024. Counterpoint also said most digital instrument clusters were based on 10–15-inch displays.
- Shipments: Omdia reported 120.96 million global automotive display shipments in the first half of 2025, up 5.1% year over year. Instrument-cluster shipments reached 43.3 million units in that period, up 16.8%. Omdia said clusters smaller than six inches grew fastest, supported by compact EVs and entry-level models in emerging markets.
- Center-stack panel mix: In Omdia’s first-half 2025 figures, LTPS LCD held 46.4% and a-Si LCD 51.0% of center-stack displays. Those shares apply to that application, not all vehicle displays.
- Panel-revenue forecast: Omdia projected in July 2025 that LTPS TFT LCD would account for 45% and OLED for 9% of automotive display-panel revenue in 2025, with the total market at $13.6 billion. These are forecasts, not confirmed full-year results in the cited source.
Does a larger screen make a better dashboard?
Not on its own. A larger display creates more room for information, but drivers’ preferences also vary around simplicity, the role of the instrument cluster and the use of touch controls.

- Simple interfaces: In Continental AG’s 2024 study across five countries, 80% of Japanese respondents preferred simple, uncomplicated display interfaces. The study also found 58% of US motorists preferred colorful display content, illustrating that preferences can differ by market.
- Clusters still matter: Mobility Global reported that 65% of 8,023 vehicle owners surveyed across eight markets valued an instrument cluster even when a HUD was available. The results reflect the 2025 survey, reported in 2026.
- Touch and physical controls coexist: In the same Mobility Global survey, 48% of global respondents preferred a combination of touchscreens and physical buttons or knobs.
These are survey findings, not universal preferences or direct measurements of distraction or safety. They suggest that dashboard design involves more than screen size: it also involves what information belongs where and how drivers interact with it.
Will your next car have one big LCD?
It may have a larger or more integrated digital cockpit, but the evidence does not establish that every driver’s next car will replace its instrument panel with one large LCD. LCD remains the dominant technology by automotive center-display area, and LTPS is gaining ground against older a-Si LCD. At the same time, OLED appears in premium applications, smaller clusters are growing in some vehicle segments, and clusters, center displays, HUDs and physical controls retain distinct roles.

The likely direction is toward more coordinated displays, with their size, technology and control mix varying by vehicle, price tier and market—not one universal screen design.
