Tesla’s Emergency Drive Away Feature: Why Driving Off Plugged In Could Cost Up to $25,000

Tesla’s reported Emergency Drive Away override may let eligible drivers leave while connected to a Supercharger, but Tesla warns that it will damage the vehicle and charger. The cited $25,000 is a possible infrastructure repair cost, not a confirmed driver charge.

Tesla’s reported Emergency Drive Away override lets some drivers request Drive while a Supercharger cable is still connected—but Tesla warns that doing so damages both the vehicle and the charger. The reported “up to $25,000” figure refers to possible electrical and civil repairs at the Supercharger, not a confirmed bill to the driver.

What Tesla’s Emergency Drive Away feature does

Under normal operation, a connected charging cable is one condition that causes a Tesla to shift automatically into Park, according to Tesla’s owner manual. Recent reporting describes a new emergency override that allows an eligible driver to request Drive while still connected to a Supercharger.

As reported by Tesla Oracle on October 2, 2026, the vehicle displays a warning and requires the driver to affirmatively activate the emergency feature. The warning reads: “Driving with the cable connected will cause damage to your vehicle and the Supercharger. Use only in case of an emergency.” This is not a damage-free release mechanism; Tesla’s reported warning says damage will occur. Tesla Oracle’s report

Who can use it, according to current reporting

Tesla Oracle’s October 2, 2026 report describes availability at US Superchargers for vehicles running software version 2026.38.3 or later. It says Model S and Model X vehicles built before 2021 are not supported. These rollout details have not been established here through a Tesla announcement or feature-specific manual entry, so drivers should check their own vehicle’s display and current Tesla guidance rather than assume eligibility.

What the $25,000 figure means

In a statement quoted by Electrek on October 2, 2026, Tesla Charging said: “Depends on the Supercharger, but electrical & civil cost can be up to $25k. Service visit mandatory for the chargeport. Only use in case of an emergency.” Electrek’s report

The wording describes a possible maximum for electrical and civil repair work at the Supercharger, with the amount depending on the site. It does not establish a typical cost, how often that level of damage occurs, or that Tesla will invoice the driver for $25,000. Electrek reports that Tesla did not specify who would pay for repairs. Tesla Charging also says a charge-port service visit is mandatory, but the reported statement gives no price for that visit.

What to do if you need to leave while charging

  • If there is no immediate emergency: stop charging and disconnect the cable normally before driving away.
  • If an emergency makes immediate departure necessary: follow the on-screen instructions only if the feature is available on your vehicle. Expect damage to both the vehicle and Supercharger, and arrange the required charge-port service visit.
  • Do not treat an accessory as equivalent: a separate breakaway adapter is not Tesla’s Emergency Drive Away feature, and the reporting does not establish that any adapter will prevent damage or work safely with a particular vehicle and charger.

Emergency Drive Away is therefore a reported last-resort option—not a convenient way to end a charging session. The available reporting does not settle who pays for Supercharger repairs or how much the vehicle service visit costs.
