A 22 kW label describes the maximum power an AC charging point can make available under the right electrical conditions. It does not promise that every connected car will draw 22 kW. In AC charging, the vehicle’s onboard charger (OBC) converts incoming alternating current into the direct current the battery uses, so the OBC’s rating is usually the first ceiling to check.
An EV with an 11 kW AC charger cannot take 22 kW from a 22 kW point. Even when the car can accept 22 kW, the cable, number of phases, site supply, power sharing, battery temperature and state of charge can reduce the live rate. The exact vehicle model year and charging specification are essential before you replace a cable or wallbox.

What the 22 kW number actually means
The kilowatt figure on a charging point is its maximum available output, not a guaranteed session speed. The point can advertise 22 kW while the car requests less, the electrical installation supplies less, or the charging system deliberately reduces power to protect the battery.
Think of the session as a chain. The vehicle, cable, charging point and upstream electrical supply must all support the same operating conditions. The lowest effective limit in that chain controls the result. A higher-rated wallbox cannot force a vehicle to accept power above its own hardware limit, and a high-capacity car cannot draw more than the point or supply can safely provide.

A display showing a value below 22 kW therefore does not, by itself, prove that the charger is defective. You need to identify whether the restriction comes from the car, the connection, the site or battery-management protection.
The onboard charger is the usual first limit on AC
With AC charging, electricity reaches the car as alternating current. The onboard charger converts it to direct current for the battery. Phoenix Contact describes this AC-to-DC conversion as the function that makes supply power usable by the battery, and Porsche’s support guidance states: “Your vehicle’s on-board charger determines the maximum AC charging rate.” You can read that guidance at Porsche’s charging-speed support page.
That means the charging point and the car negotiate a rate the vehicle can accept. If the OBC is rated for 11 kW, the car will normally top out around 11 kW on AC even when the point is rated at 22 kW. This is a hardware ceiling, not a software setting that a different cable can remove.
A model-specific example
An Eaton guide uses a Volkswagen ID.3 configuration with an 11 kW OBC to illustrate the mismatch: connected to a 22 kW AC point, that configuration remains limited to 11 kW. The example applies to the specified ID.3 equipment, not every ID.3 or every EV. Check the charging specification for your exact model year and market because optional chargers and regional equipment can differ.
The same guide cites a 130 kW maximum DC figure for the referenced ID.3 battery. That number concerns DC charging and should not be treated as the AC capability of the car or as a universal specification for all versions.

Other reasons a 22 kW AC point can deliver less
Cable current, connector and phase configuration
The cable is part of the electrical limit. Its connector, current rating and phase configuration must match the vehicle, the point and the local installation. Porsche cautions that a cable rated below the vehicle-and-point combination can reduce charging power.
Phase configuration is particularly important for AC charging. Ford owner-manual material notes that onboard-charger configuration and local supply arrangements determine what the vehicle can receive. A three-phase cable connected where only a single-phase supply is available can produce a lower rate in the market-specific situation described by that manual. Do not generalize that example to every country: mains voltage, phase arrangements, connectors and vehicle equipment vary by region.
Recommended Free Tools
Before buying a replacement, verify all of the following:
- The connector type required by the vehicle and charging point.
- Whether the car and site use single-phase or three-phase AC.
- The cable’s current rating and whether it is suitable for the intended phase arrangement.
- Local electrical and installation requirements.
A cable can remove a cable bottleneck, but it cannot raise an 11 kW OBC to 22 kW.
Available electrical supply
A point may be rated for 22 kW while the building connection or circuit is configured for less. Load management can reduce the power assigned to the vehicle when the site is protecting its supply. The rating printed on the enclosure describes what the equipment can support, not necessarily what the installation is delivering at that moment.

If the same car charges slowly at one location but reaches a higher rate at another compatible location, the site supply or configuration becomes a stronger suspect. Ask the operator whether the connector is fully provisioned and whether a building-level energy-management system is limiting output.
Shared output between connectors
Some installations split available power between two active connectors. Porsche’s model-specific Cayenne Electric guidance recommends choosing a point that is not shared with another vehicle where possible because some chargers divide their output. This is a possible site factor, not a rule that every dual-connector unit shares power.
Check the point’s screen, signage or operator documentation for a shared-power arrangement. If another vehicle begins charging and your rate falls, that timing is useful evidence of site-level power sharing.
Battery temperature and state of charge
Battery-management protections can reduce charging power when the battery is too cold or too warm. Porsche explains that these protections prevent maximum charging power under unfavorable temperatures. Charging power can also change as the battery’s state of charge rises. The exact temperature limits and taper behavior depend on the vehicle, so avoid applying a fixed threshold or a universal charging curve.
Temperature-related reduction is often temporary. A car that accepts more power after the battery warms or cools is behaving differently from one that is permanently limited by an 11 kW OBC. Record the battery condition and state of charge when comparing sessions.

AC and DC charging are not equivalent
A 22 kW AC point is not the same thing as a 22 kW DC fast charger. The conversion location changes the limiting hardware.
| Charging method | Where AC-to-DC conversion occurs | Main vehicle limit | What can reduce the live rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC charging | Inside the vehicle’s onboard charger | The OBC’s maximum AC rate | OBC rating, cable, phase configuration, site supply, sharing, temperature and state of charge |
| DC fast charging | At the charging station; DC is delivered to the vehicle battery system | The vehicle’s maximum DC acceptance rate | Vehicle acceptance limit, station conditions, battery protection and the station’s available output |
DC charging bypasses the AC OBC, so an 11 kW AC specification does not automatically describe the car’s DC capability. It still does not guarantee the station’s nameplate output. Chevrolet explains that each vehicle has a maximum DC acceptance rate and may receive less than the station’s rated maximum. A station may also provide its highest output for only part of a session before reducing power to protect the battery.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes commercial charging equipment in categories based on AC or DC and maximum power output, with commercial systems approximately spanning 22 kW to 500 kW. Those are equipment ratings, not promises about what an individual vehicle will accept.
How to diagnose your actual charging limit
- Identify the charging method. Confirm whether the connector is supplying AC or DC. A 22 kW AC point should not be compared directly with a DC fast charger carrying a similar number.
- Look up the exact vehicle specification. Use the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s current technical data for your model year, market and equipment level. Find both the maximum AC rate and, where relevant, the maximum DC acceptance rate. Check for an optional OBC.
- Inspect the cable details. Confirm connector, phase and current rating. Compare the cable with the vehicle and point requirements for your region. Do not assume that a cable advertised for 22 kW is appropriate for every car or installation.
- Check the site supply. Determine whether the point is fed by single-phase or three-phase power and whether the installation uses load management. A point’s enclosure rating does not establish that the building is supplying its maximum.
- Check for shared power. Look for a second vehicle on the same unit or an operator notice explaining connector power sharing. Observe whether your rate changes when another connector starts or stops.
- Record battery conditions. Note battery temperature, outside conditions and state of charge. A cold or hot battery, or a battery near a high state of charge, may request less power by design.
- Compare with a second compatible point. Use the same car and, if possible, the same cable at a point known to support the vehicle’s configuration. A higher result elsewhere points toward the first site or its supply rather than the car’s OBC.
- Escalate with evidence. If the vehicle specification, cable, phases and supply all align and the rate remains unexpectedly low, provide the vehicle and station operators with the session time, connector, state of charge, displayed power and any sharing or temperature observations.
Reading the number shown during a session
The displayed kilowatt value is an instantaneous operating point, not necessarily the charger’s nameplate. It can change as the car negotiates with the station, as another connector draws power, or as battery protections intervene. A brief value below 22 kW is not enough to diagnose a fault.

Compare like with like: the same state-of-charge range, similar battery temperature, the same cable and a point with equivalent phase and supply conditions. If your vehicle’s official AC maximum is 11 kW, a stable rate near that level on a 22 kW point is consistent with the specification. If the car is documented for 22 kW but never approaches it under favorable conditions at multiple compatible sites, investigate the cable, phase supply, settings and equipment with the operators.

When a new cable or wallbox can help
A properly rated cable is worthwhile only when the existing cable is the bottleneck. Choose an EV charging cable rated for your car and charger after confirming connector, phase, current and local requirements. A 32 A three-phase cable may be appropriate for a compatible 22 kW installation, but the rating alone does not establish compatibility and cannot exceed the vehicle’s OBC limit.
A wallbox or installer can help when the existing point, circuit or building supply is undersized, incorrectly configured or subject to avoidable load-management limits. Upgrading that equipment will not overcome the car’s onboard AC ceiling. Have an electrician verify the supply and protection requirements rather than selecting equipment from the 22 kW label alone.
Common mistaken conclusions
- “The point says 22 kW, so my car must charge at 22 kW.” The point’s rating is a maximum available output; the car may request less.
- “A bigger cable will double my charging speed.” It helps only if the cable is the limiting component. It cannot change the OBC rating.
- “The car’s AC and DC numbers should match.” AC uses the onboard charger; DC conversion occurs at the station, so the two acceptance limits are separate.
- “A lower rate proves the wallbox is broken.” Temperature, state of charge, supply constraints and connector sharing can all produce a lower but intentional rate.
- “Every dual-connector station splits power.” Some do and some do not. Confirm the behavior for the specific site.
What information is needed for an exact answer
The title alone does not identify a single expected rate. A useful diagnosis needs the vehicle make, exact model and model year; country or electrical region; AC or DC charging method; cable type and rating; the point’s connector and stated output; the supply’s phase arrangement; battery state of charge and temperature; and whether another connector was active.

That sequence prevents spending money on a higher-rated point that the car cannot use.
