If a gasoline car feels strangely coarse after an electric vehicle, you may be missing four specific habits: instant, smooth acceleration; regenerative slowing (sometimes including one-pedal driving); a quiet cabin; and the routine of charging at home. A gas car can still be the more practical choice for your housing, trips, weather or budget, but those changes are real driving differences rather than nostalgia alone.
No survey can identify exactly why you switched back or which sensation matters most to you. Use the explanations below as a checklist: mark the losses you notice, then weigh them against refueling flexibility, public-charging access, cold-weather range, purchase price and repair exposure.

What feels missing when you return to a gasoline car?
Immediate, even power
An EV’s motor can deliver torque as soon as you press the accelerator. The response is usually linear: a small pedal movement produces a small, predictable change in speed, and a larger movement produces more without a gear change interrupting the motion. In a gasoline car, the engine, transmission and throttle have to build and manage power. You may feel a delay, a shift, or a change in engine sound before the car gathers speed. After months of the EV response, that sequence can register as hesitation even when the gasoline car is operating normally.
Plug In America’s 2026 Annual EV Driver Survey found that more than 90% of EV-driver respondents considered their EV more fun to drive than a gas car. That is a self-reported opinion, not a controlled comparison of acceleration times, but it helps explain why the power delivery can be the first thing you notice missing.

Regenerative deceleration and one-pedal driving
Regenerative braking changes what happens when you lift off the accelerator. As the vehicle slows, its electric motor operates as a generator and recovers some energy into the battery. A 2026 study defines it as “a process in which the electric motor powering the vehicle recuperates energy through decelerating the vehicle when the driver releases the accelerator pedal.” You still have a conventional brake pedal, but you can often do much of your everyday slowing with the accelerator alone.
Some EVs let you select stronger or weaker regeneration. Others offer a one-pedal mode that can bring the car to a complete stop when you release the accelerator, subject to the vehicle’s settings and conditions. In a gasoline car, lifting off normally gives you engine braking, but it does not return energy to a battery and usually does not provide the same adjustable, stop-and-go control. You therefore use the brake pedal more often and may need to plan your foot movements differently.
Quiet, low-effort travel
EVs do not have an idling engine, exhaust pulses or conventional gear changes. Tire and wind noise remain, but low-speed travel can feel unusually calm. A gasoline car adds engine vibration and sound, especially when accelerating or waiting at a stop. If you used your EV for commuting, the lost quiet may be more noticeable than the difference in peak performance.
The home-charging routine
Home charging turns energy into a background task: plug in when you arrive and start the next day with a replenished battery, provided your vehicle and electrical setup support that routine. Plug In America reports that fewer than one-third of surveyed EV drivers charge every day, so daily charging is not universal. CAA’s fall 2024 survey of Canadian EV drivers found that more than 80% of their charging occurred at home, showing how central home access can be for many owners.

Returning to gas replaces that routine with trips to a station. Refueling is familiar and generally quick, but it requires a detour and leaves you exposed to local fuel prices. If you lived in a house, apartment or workplace with convenient charging, the loss can feel like losing a household appliance rather than merely changing fuel.
What owner surveys say about missing the EV experience
Strong stated satisfaction and loyalty
Plug In America’s 2026 survey received 4,205 responses: 3,614 complete and 591 partial. Of those, 3,809 respondents were EV drivers; fieldwork ran from January 21 through March 31, 2026. Among EV-driver respondents, 94.3% said they were likely or very likely to acquire an EV for their next vehicle. More than 90% said their EV was more fun to drive, easier to maintain and cheaper to fuel than a gas car.
Those figures describe what respondents reported about their own vehicles. They do not prove that every EV costs less to operate, that every model is more reliable, or that you personally will prefer one. Electricity rates, fuel prices, insurance, tires, maintenance schedules and vehicle prices vary by location and model.
Drivers commonly adapt to regenerative controls
A separate 2026 online US survey retained 514 eligible regular EV drivers from 1,149 recruits. Seventy-three percent said they enjoyed regenerative braking, and 66% said they enjoyed one-pedal driving. At least 70% reported becoming accustomed to regenerative braking or one-pedal driving within one month. The sample skewed somewhat younger and more female than the typical US EV-driving population, and the authors caution that an online survey cannot fully capture real-world behavior.

If you miss one-pedal control, you are therefore describing a preference shared by many surveyed drivers, not an unusual reaction. Other drivers prefer a lighter regeneration setting or conventional coasting. The control is adjustable in some vehicles, so “missing EVs” does not require liking the strongest possible regeneration.
The trade-offs that may have pushed you back to gas
Charging access and trip planning
An EV is easiest to live with when you can charge where the car normally sits. A private driveway, assigned apartment charger or reliable workplace option can make local driving simple. Without those, you depend on public chargers whose locations, availability and speeds vary. A long trip also requires more planning around charging stops than a gasoline trip that uses the existing fuel network.
AAA’s 2025 US survey of purchase barriers found that 56% of respondents cited convenient public charging and 55% cited fear of running out of charge. These are perceptions among US adults considering full electrification, not measurements of every charging network or a diagnosis of your experience. They nevertheless identify why a driver might value a gas car’s refueling flexibility even while missing an EV’s driving behavior.

Battery range can fall in extreme cold because the battery and cabin require energy for heating and the chemistry operates less efficiently. In CAA’s fall 2024 survey, 67% of surveyed Canadian EV drivers said reduced range in extreme cold had been a problem. That result applies to the surveyed Canadian owners and should not be treated as a universal percentage for every climate or model. If winter trips were the reason you changed cars, the quiet acceleration you miss may not outweigh the predictability you gained.

Price and repair exposure
AAA’s 2025 US survey listed battery repair cost as a barrier for 62% of respondents and purchase price as a barrier for 59%. It also listed perceived unsuitability for long-distance travel for 57%. A battery repair concern is not the same as an actual repair bill, and a higher purchase price can be offset by operating costs for some owners. Compare the complete cost of the particular EV and gas car you can buy, including financing, insurance, energy, tires, scheduled maintenance and any warranty limits.
AAA director of automotive engineering Greg Brannon summarized the uncertainty on June 3, 2025: “Since we began tracking interest in fully electric vehicles, we’ve seen some variability. While the automotive industry is committed to long-term electrification and providing a diverse range of models, underlying consumer hesitation remains.” That hesitation can coexist with genuine enjoyment of an EV once someone owns one.
EV versus gasoline: a practical decision framework
| Driving or ownership axis | What an EV may offer | What a gasoline car may offer | Question to answer for yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acceleration and smoothness | Immediate motor response, linear delivery and no conventional gear shifts | Engine and transmission feel, with shifts and engine sound as part of the experience | Do you value seamless response more than mechanical feedback? |
| Slowing down | Adjustable regenerative braking; some models provide one-pedal driving while retaining a brake pedal | Engine braking plus conventional friction brakes; no battery energy recovery | Do you miss lifting off to control speed, or do you prefer a traditional pedal feel? |
| Noise and comfort | No idling engine or exhaust pulses; tire and wind noise remain | Engine vibration and sound can be prominent, especially under acceleration | Is quietness a daily benefit or do you enjoy engine character? |
| Energy routine | Home charging can replenish the car while parked; public access varies | Refueling stations provide familiar, route-based flexibility | Can you reliably charge where you live, work or normally park? |
| Long-distance travel | Requires route and charging planning; cold conditions can reduce range | Usually planned around fuel stations, with weather effects that do not involve battery range in the same way | How often do you take trips beyond your normal charging area? |
| Cost concerns | Electricity and maintenance costs depend on local rates, vehicle and service needs; purchase price may be higher | Fuel and maintenance costs depend on local prices, engine and service schedule; purchase price may be lower for some models | Have you compared your actual annual costs rather than national averages? |
How to identify exactly what you miss
Separate the emotional impression from the practical reason you changed vehicles. For two weeks, note each moment when the gas car feels inferior and classify it:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Response: You wanted acceleration without waiting for a downshift or engine revs.
- Pedal control: You lifted off expecting the car to slow strongly and found yourself reaching for the brake.
- Quiet: Engine noise or vibration interrupted a commute that used to feel calm.
- Routine: You missed arriving home and starting the next day with energy already added.
- Confidence: You miss the EV locally but do not miss planning charging, monitoring range or managing winter trips.
Then record the reason for the switch in the same categories. If charging access or cold-weather range caused the change, an EV with a different body style, battery, charging arrangement or a dependable home installation might address the problem; if the issue was purchase price or repair risk, changing models may not. Suitability depends on your dwelling, electrical service, climate, driving distance and budget.

Can a gas car reproduce the EV feeling?
It can imitate parts of it, but not the whole powertrain. A gasoline car may offer a quiet cabin, smooth automatic transmission or strong low-speed response, yet it still produces power through an engine and transmission rather than an electric motor. Engine braking can help you use the accelerator and brake less in some situations, but it does not recover energy into a traction battery or provide the same one-pedal behavior.
If the feeling you miss is primarily acceleration and quietness, compare gasoline cars on those characteristics during a thorough drive. If it is regenerative control and home charging, only an electrified vehicle can supply the underlying mechanism. Be explicit about which feature you are paying to regain instead of assuming any newer car will feel like your previous EV.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The surveys establish group patterns: many EV drivers report enjoyment, ease of maintenance, lower fueling costs and an intention to buy another EV; many also report adapting to regenerative controls quickly. They do not establish why the unnamed driver in this story switched back to gasoline. Your answer may be one missing sensation, a practical constraint, or a combination of both.
That distinction matters when interpreting loyalty statistics. CAA’s fall 2024 Canadian survey found that 87% of surveyed Canadian EV drivers said they were likely to buy an EV again, while AAA’s 2025 US survey measured barriers among adults considering full electrification. The populations and countries differ, so their percentages cannot be combined into one measure of universal demand. They are useful context, not a verdict for your garage.
