The boxy white electric vans spotted delivering Amazon packages in Seattle are GM BrightDrop commercial vans used by independent Amazon Delivery Service Partners (DSPs). That does not mean Amazon owns the vans or has switched its delivery fleet from Rivian: GeekWire later clarified that the Seattle vehicles were separate from Amazon’s own small BrightDrop test.
Amazon route, independent delivery business
An Amazon package route does not necessarily mean an Amazon-owned vehicle. DSPs are independent businesses that deliver packages under contract with Amazon, and they can arrange vehicles through rentals, leases, purchases or other fleet arrangements. The reporting on the Seattle sightings says DSPs were using some BrightDrop vans, but does not establish who owned or supplied the specific vehicles photographed. GeekWire’s report and subsequent clarification are the key sources for that distinction.

In other words, the vans were operating on Amazon delivery routes; the available reporting does not show that Amazon owned them. Their white, relatively unbranded appearance also differed from the familiar blue Prime-branded vans, but color and route alone cannot establish ownership.

- Seattle DSP vehicles: Independent delivery partners used BrightDrop vans on Amazon routes. GeekWire’s update says these were not part of Amazon’s separate test.
- Amazon’s own evaluation: Amazon reportedly acquired a small number of BrightDrop vehicles in 2023 and was testing them. Bloomberg reported a test of about a dozen; Amazon described its practice of evaluating different vehicle options, including a small number of Chevrolet BrightDrops. That is evidence of an evaluation, not a large production order or a fleet-wide decision.
The Seattle sighting therefore does not demonstrate that Amazon has adopted BrightDrop at scale, replaced Rivian vans, or bought the photographed vehicles.
BrightDrop Zevo: GM’s commercial electric vans
BrightDrop began as GM’s commercial-EV business. In November 2023, GM folded BrightDrop into its GM Envolve commercial operations; the portfolio includes the Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 electric vans. The vans are built for commercial work, including delivery, rather than sold as consumer passenger vehicles. GM’s announcement describes the integration and product lineup.
The Seattle van can be identified as a BrightDrop from the reporting, but its exact Zevo model is not confirmed by appearance alone. The 400 and 600 are related in design; without a confirmed badge, dimensions or vehicle identification number, it is safer to call it a BrightDrop van than to assign a specific model.

GM’s published figures for the Zevo 400 and 600 include cargo volumes of about 11.7 and 17.4 cubic meters respectively, and a stated range of up to 250 miles in a cited configuration. GM also says the vans can add up to 160 miles of range per hour using 120-kW DC fast charging. These are manufacturer figures tied to particular configurations and test conditions, not a guarantee for every van or a specification confirmed for the Seattle vehicle. Payload, weather, route, driving style and charging conditions can all affect real-world results. GM’s specification announcement provides the figures and context.
How they compare with Amazon’s Rivian vans
Amazon’s public electric-delivery rollout has been strongly associated with Rivian. In July 2022, Amazon said Rivian vans were rolling out in Seattle and other U.S. cities, as part of a stated goal of 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. That number was a target, not a claim that the target had been reached. Amazon described Rivian vehicles as designed around its delivery workflow, with features including integrated routing and navigation, driver-support technology, a powered bulkhead door and safety systems. Amazon’s rollout announcement outlines those features and the historical goal.
That purpose-built relationship makes Rivian the baseline for Amazon’s public EV strategy, but it does not mean every vehicle on an Amazon route is a Rivian or belongs to Amazon. DSPs’ vehicle choices can add other makes and models to the network. Amazon’s separate BrightDrop test also shows it has evaluated another option, but the evidence here does not indicate a replacement program.

What was observed inside the Seattle van
GeekWire described a white, boxy vehicle with a large central infotainment display and no shelving in the photographed cargo area; packages were reportedly on the floor. The driver said the van lacked Amazon’s AI-equipped safety camera in the front cab. These are observations about one vehicle and a driver’s account, not universal characteristics of BrightDrop vans or every DSP setup. They do not establish whether the camera was absent by design, temporarily, or only on that particular vehicle. Likewise, a minimally fitted cargo area does not prove that BrightDrop vans generally come without shelving.

The reporting does not establish why a particular DSP chose these vans. Possible practical factors include vehicle availability, lease or rental terms, purchase economics, cargo needs, access to charging, and the contractor’s existing fleet arrangements. A DSP might also value the flexibility to source an EV independently rather than wait for a particular vehicle supply channel. Those are plausible considerations, not confirmed motives in this case.
For a delivery operator, the decision involves more than the van’s advertised range. A fleet must consider charging access and depot electrical capacity, route distance, payload, weather, repeated stops, service support, driver training and any required cargo fit-out. A vehicle that suits one route or contractor may not suit another. No information in the Seattle sighting establishes the DSP’s charging routine or how its van was configured for sustained package work.

What the sighting does—and doesn’t—tell us
The clearest takeaway is that Amazon’s last-mile delivery network can contain vehicles arranged by independent contractors alongside vehicles tied more directly to Amazon’s own fleet plans. The Seattle BrightDrops are evidence of that local variety, while Amazon’s small test is evidence that the company evaluated another electric-van option. Neither fact alone proves a change in Amazon’s overall purchasing strategy.
The reporting does not identify the DSP or fleet supplier, establish ownership of the photographed vans, confirm the exact Zevo model or count how many operated in Seattle. It also does not show whether those vans remained in service in 2026. A local sighting is not a fleet census, and one driver’s comments cannot establish equipment specifications for every BrightDrop or every Amazon delivery partner.
