Max Verstappen said he skipped a soft-tyre qualifying simulation in second practice because he wanted to complete a long run in case rain arrived. The explanation was specific to his practice plan; it was not a general claim that medium tyres were better in changing conditions.
Why Verstappen did not use soft tyres in FP2
In a RaceFans report republished by VCP Motorsports on October 2, 2026, Verstappen explained: “I wanted to do a long run in case there was some rain coming in.” He used the session to gather long-run information rather than switch to soft tyres for the qualifying simulation described in the report. The comment indicates rain was a possibility he was planning around; it does not establish that rain fell or was confirmed as imminent.
What the report says about his practice runs
- Verstappen was reported to have been quickest in first practice, where he ran soft tyres.
- He began second practice on medium tyres and initially set the pace, according to the report.
- He did not switch to softs for the qualifying simulation and was reported fourth in the second session.
Those session positions are not a like-for-like measure of pace against drivers who used soft tyres for a qualifying-style run: the report describes different compounds and different run purposes. It does not provide an official tyre-allocation document or independently verified performance analysis.
What Verstappen said about the conditions
The same report attributes this broader comment to Verstappen: “It’s a tricky track, it’s really hot, there’s a lot of degradation so a lot of things to figure out but it has been a positive.” That is his assessment of the track and the work still to do, not independent measurement of the temperature or tyre degradation.
