V12 engines usually cost more than comparable V8s because they contain four additional cylinders, require more cylinder-related parts and manufacturing operations, and are often produced in smaller volumes. Maintenance can also be more expensive, but cylinder count alone cannot predict the bill: engine packaging, access, service intervals, parts supply, labor rates, vehicle age and the specific model matter just as much.
The short answer: more hardware, more operations and often less scale
A V12 has 12 cylinders; a V8 has eight. In otherwise comparable engines, the V12 therefore needs four more pistons, connecting rods, combustion chambers, sets of valves and related components. The crankshaft, cylinder heads, block, intake and exhaust systems also have to accommodate the longer or more complex engine.

That physical difference raises the amount of material to machine, assemble, inspect and test. The economic effect is amplified when a V12 is a low-volume engine with dedicated tooling, specialist technicians and a narrower parts supply. A high-volume V8 can spread engineering, tooling and factory overhead across many more units.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe same logic applies to servicing only in some cases. A technician may have more spark plugs, ignition components, injectors or valve-clearance points to inspect, but a difficult-to-reach V8 can cost more to service than an accessible V12. There is no defensible industry-wide percentage or dollar premium based on cylinder count alone.

What the extra four cylinders add
The most direct way to understand the difference is to count the hardware that is normally repeated for each cylinder. Exact equipment varies by engine design, so the table identifies common relationships rather than universal rules.
| Component or operation | Typical V8 count | Typical V12 count | Cost implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pistons | 8 | 12 | Four additional pistons must be forged or cast, machined, coated and fitted. |
| Connecting rods | 8 | 12 | More rods require more machining, weighing, balancing and inspection. |
| Combustion chambers | 8 | 12 | The block and cylinder heads need four more combustion locations and associated machining. |
| Valves | Usually 2, 3, 4 or 5 per cylinder, depending on design | Usually the same per-cylinder count | A V12 generally has 50% more valves than an equivalent V8 with the same valve layout. |
| Fuel injectors and spark plugs | Often one of each per cylinder, but design-dependent | Often one of each per cylinder, but design-dependent | More consumable and ignition parts can increase service-part quantities. |
| Ignition coils | One per cylinder on many modern engines, but not all | One per cylinder on many modern engines, but not all | Additional coils and wiring can increase replacement and diagnostic work. |
| Sensors and actuators | Not necessarily one per cylinder | Not necessarily one per cylinder | Some systems are shared by a bank or the whole engine, so the increase is not proportional. |
| Head gaskets and cylinder heads | Usually two banks in a V8 | Usually two banks in a V12 | The number of banks may be the same, but each V12 head and gasket is often larger or more heavily populated. |
A V12 is not simply a V8 with four cylinders bolted on. Designers must size the crankshaft, bearings, cooling passages, oiling system, timing drive, intake runners and exhaust paths for the complete engine. Those systems may be shared, duplicated by bank or redesigned entirely, which is why a component-by-component count cannot produce a universal price.
Why manufacturing a V12 usually costs more
More machining and inspection
Engine blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts require precision machining. Adding four cylinders creates more bores, deck area, valve seats, ports and fastener locations to cut and measure. The extra surfaces are not merely material costs: each operation consumes machine time, tooling life, coolant, inspection capacity and labor.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRotating parts also need careful balancing. A V12 crankshaft and its associated rods and pistons must meet tight mass and dimensional targets. The number of parts increases the opportunities for variation, so manufacturers add weighing, matching and quality-control steps. These are engineering reasons for higher cost, not a published universal surcharge.
Specialized tooling and engineering
A manufacturer must design patterns, castings, machining fixtures, assembly tooling, software and test procedures for each engine family. A V12 may share some technology with a V8, but its block, crankshaft, cylinder heads, intake system, exhaust system and calibration can still be unique. If fewer engines are built, the fixed development and tooling expense is divided among fewer units.

Production scale changes the unit economics
Ferrari’s 2021 annual report gives a useful company-specific illustration: it reported average production of approximately eight V12 engines per day and 49 V8 engines per day. Those figures describe Ferrari in 2021; they are not an industry average, a repair-cost measure or proof that every V12 costs a particular percentage more.
At that output, a dedicated V12 line has fewer opportunities to spread equipment, specialist labor and process-development costs across units than a higher-volume V8 line. Ferrari has also described factory arrangements in which assembly automation varies somewhat with cylinder size. A larger or lower-volume engine may therefore retain more specialized handling or manual operations, although the exact mix depends on the plant and engine generation.
Production arrangements differ among manufacturers. BMW’s Hams Hall facility identifies both V8 and V12 petrol engines among its output and says it has been entrusted with both since 2022. That demonstrates that one site can build both families; it does not mean their processes, volumes or costs are identical.
Testing and validation
Every engine must be tested for leaks, oil pressure, emissions, software operation and performance. A V12 may require additional measurement points, more complex calibration and longer test cycles because it has two banks with more combustion events and control variables. Some tests are shared across the engine, so the time increase is not simply 50 percent.
Why maintenance can be more expensive
More cylinder-related service items
Routine service often involves replacing or inspecting parts repeated by cylinder. A V12 may need 12 spark plugs instead of eight, 12 ignition coils on a coil-per-plug design, and more injectors or seals if those parts are replaced during a repair. The difference is clearest when the service schedule calls for replacing every item at once.

Not every maintenance operation scales with cylinder count. One oil pan, one cooling-system pressure test or one diagnostic scan can apply to the whole engine. A V12 may use two banks but still have a single air filter housing, electronic control unit or accessory drive. The service schedule for the exact vehicle determines what is actually changed.

Access and packaging
Labor time can dominate the invoice. A tightly packaged V12 may leave little room around the rear cylinders, valve covers, ignition coils or exhaust components. Removing an intake manifold, underbody panel, heat shield or other surrounding part before reaching a routine item can turn a simple job into several hours of work.
Conversely, some V12 vehicles were engineered with unusually good access, while some V8 vehicles place their components under a dashboard, against a firewall or beneath complex emissions equipment. Cylinder count predicts the number of cylinders; it does not predict the number of technician hours.
Parts availability and specialist labor
V12s are commonly installed in expensive or limited-production vehicles, where parts may be ordered less frequently and stocked by fewer distributors. A dealer or specialist may need to source a bank-specific gasket, harness, sensor or trim component rather than use a widely available V8 equivalent. Shipping, minimum-order quantities and longer lead times can raise the total even when the part itself is not inherently more complex.
Labor rates also vary by market. A shop with factory-level diagnostic equipment and technicians familiar with a particular V12 may charge more than a general repair facility. Warranty coverage, service contracts and goodwill repairs can reduce the owner’s bill, while an older vehicle with deferred maintenance can create a much larger catch-up service.

Age and condition often outweigh architecture
A well-maintained modern V12 may need only scheduled consumables, while an neglected V8 may require timing components, cooling-system work and oil-leak repairs at the same time. Rubber seals, wiring insulation, hoses, batteries and electronic modules age by time and environment rather than cylinder count. When comparing ownership costs, separate routine service from failures caused by age, misuse or deferred maintenance.
Manufacturing cost is not the same as service cost
A more expensive engine to manufacture does not automatically create a predictable repair premium. Production cost includes engineering, tooling, factory labor, quality control and capital investment. A repair invoice includes parts prices, technician time, diagnostic work, shop overhead, taxes and the vehicle’s service policy.
For example, a manufacturer may design a V12 with modular ignition coils that are easy to replace, while a V8 may require removal of a supercharger or intake system for access. Conversely, a V12 with two complex variable-valve-timing systems can require more diagnostic and labor time than a simpler V8. The architecture, not the cylinder label, determines the job.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Specify the market and model year. Parts prices, labor rates, emissions equipment and warranty terms differ by country and sometimes by state or province.
- Record the exact engine code and transmission. Two vehicles sold under the same badge can use different engines, service intervals and access procedures.
- Collect the manufacturer schedule. List oil and filter intervals, spark-plug replacement, air and fuel filters, belt or chain inspections, coolant changes, fluid services and valve-clearance checks where applicable.
- Separate scheduled maintenance from repairs. Put consumables and inspection items in one column; list cooling, oil-leak, electrical, emissions and internal-engine failures separately.
- Ask for documented labor times. Obtain the published or shop-estimated hours for common jobs such as plugs, coils, valve-cover gaskets, starter replacement and cooling-system work.
- Price parts in the owner’s market. Compare genuine, aftermarket and remanufactured options only when they meet the vehicle’s specification. Include shipping and availability, not just the listed price.
- Check access requirements. Ask whether the job requires removing intake components, undertrays, exhaust shields, body panels or special tools.
- Account for coverage. Include the remaining factory warranty, extended coverage, service campaign history and roadside assistance.
- Use the same evidence period. A V12 quote from 2026 and a V8 quote from 2021 are not a clean comparison because labor and parts prices change.
Only after those steps can you calculate a meaningful annual estimate. The result will apply to those two vehicles and that market; it should not be presented as a universal V12 premium.

Questions that commonly produce misleading answers
“Is a V12 50% more expensive than a V8?”
Not necessarily. Twelve cylinders are 50% more than eight, but many engine systems are shared, and manufacturing volume, design, packaging and labor can move costs in either direction. A percentage requires matched service or repair data for specified vehicles.
“Does a V12 always use 50% more oil or fuel?”
No. Displacement, calibration, operating conditions, vehicle weight, gearing and emissions strategy determine consumption. Cylinder count alone cannot establish oil capacity, fuel economy or service cost.
“Are V12 parts always harder to find?”
No. Availability depends on the manufacturer, production volume, age, region and aftermarket support. Limited-production vehicles often have narrower supply, but a high-volume V12 component may be easier to source than an unusual V8 part.

Some routine work can be performed by any properly equipped shop, but complex diagnostics and tightly packaged repairs may require model-specific software, tools and experience. Confirm competence and labor estimates before authorizing work.
What buyers should budget for
Instead of applying a blanket multiplier, build a vehicle-specific reserve. Start with the scheduled services listed in the owner’s manual, then obtain labor-and-parts estimates for the known high-effort jobs on that engine family. Add a contingency for age-related cooling, sealing, electrical and suspension repairs, especially on an older or low-mileage car that has spent long periods unused.
Ask the seller for service records showing dates, mileage, parts replaced and the workshop that performed the work. A complete history can be more valuable than a low odometer reading because deferred maintenance often arrives as a single expensive visit. A pre-purchase inspection by a specialist should include leak checks, diagnostic scans, cooling-system testing and verification that both cylinder banks operate correctly.
Bottom line
V12 engines generally cost more to build because four additional cylinders add hardware, machining, balancing, assembly and testing, while lower production volumes can spread fixed costs over fewer engines. Ferrari’s reported 2021 averages of approximately eight V12 engines and 49 V8 engines per day illustrate how scale can differ within one manufacturer, and its factory descriptions show that automation varies with engine size. Those facts explain manufacturing economics, not a universal ownership surcharge.
