Both were built at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Toyota says it set the Supra’s performance and handling targets and developed its own driving character; the companies’ public launch materials do not state a specific financial rationale or quantify savings.
Why did Toyota team up with BMW?
The project brought together two automakers for related sports cars with different shapes and brand identities. Toyota offered a rear-wheel-drive coupe as the Supra; BMW offered an open-top roadster as the Z4. A shared program and production site could help spread the commitments involved in developing and building niche sports cars, but that is an interpretation—not a confirmed explanation from either company. The launch sources do not disclose a development-cost split, a savings figure, or a definitive commercial motive.
How were the Supra and Z4 different?
The cars shared a collaborative development and manufacturing context, but they were not presented as the same car with different badges. Toyota said Toyota GAZOO Racing defined performance and handling targets early and, with input from Toyota Motor North America and Toyota Motor Europe, gave the Supra its own driving characteristics. BMW described the Z4 as its roadster offering.
| Aspect | 2020 Toyota GR Supra | Contemporary BMW Z4 |
|---|---|---|
| Body style | Rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, according to Toyota’s U.S. launch material. | Open-top roadster, according to BMW Group UK. |
| Development identity | Toyota says Toyota GAZOO Racing set performance and handling targets and shaped the Supra’s driving character. | BMW presented the Z4 as its roadster; the cited launch material does not provide a directly comparable account of its development targets. |
| Assembly | Magna Steyr, Graz, Austria, according to Toyota. | Magna Steyr, Graz, Austria, according to BMW. |
The shared plant and project do not establish that every major component was identical—or that every system was independently developed. The official sources cited here do not provide a component-by-component inventory, so claims about precisely which parts the cars share would go beyond what they establish.

What did the U.S.-market 2020 Supra offer?
Toyota’s 2019 U.S. launch account specified a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 335 hp and 365 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Toyota estimated 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds and listed an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. These are Toyota’s launch specifications and estimate, not independent instrumented test results.
Toyota’s product-information page reported 2019 EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 26 combined for the model information it described, and cautioned that actual mileage varies. Do not treat the U.S. 3.0-liter launch specification as a global lineup: Toyota also covered a 2.0-liter Supra in selected European markets.

How do the Z4 specifications compare?
BMW’s 2018 UK launch material described a Z4 lineup that included turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. For the UK-market Z4 M40i, BMW listed 340 hp and 500 Nm, with 0–62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Those figures use a different market specification, torque unit, and acceleration benchmark from Toyota’s U.S. Supra figures; they are not a like-for-like performance comparison.

Toyota identified Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, as the Supra’s assembly site. BMW likewise named Magna Steyr as the Z4’s manufacturing partner. The common production location is evidence of shared contract manufacturing—not proof that one company simply rebadged the other’s car.
