Yes—a used Volkswagen Phaeton W12 can have a lower asking price than a new 2026 Toyota Corolla. One U.S.-dollar listing for a 2004 Phaeton W12 showed $14,587, while Toyota’s U.S. model page lists the 2026 Corolla at a starting MSRP of $23,125. That is an example of an asking price below a new-car starting price, not proof that Phaetons generally cost less or that one will cost less to own.

The listing excerpt does not establish the Phaeton’s mechanical condition, service history, taxes, fees, or final transaction price. The two figures therefore are not like-for-like: one is a used-car asking price and the other is the starting MSRP of a new compact car.
What the Corolla price covers
Toyota’s U.S. 2026 Corolla page lists the LE at $23,125, the SE at $25,565, and the XSE at $28,840; it lists hybrid trims separately. Prices and offers can vary by model and dealer. These are new-car model-page prices, not a used-car valuation.
What the Phaeton W12 is
The Phaeton was Volkswagen’s full-size premium saloon, not a direct counterpart to the Corolla. Volkswagen describes the W12 as a 6.0-liter engine. Its UK model page gives up to 440 bhp, 0–62 mph in 6.1 seconds, and a 155 mph electronically restricted top speed; those figures belong to Volkswagen’s UK presentation and should not be assumed to apply identically to every year and market. Volkswagen’s retrospective gives the original W12 output as 309 kW (420 PS), reflecting a different period/version.

What one $14,587 listing can—and cannot—tell you
The 2004 W12 listing makes the headline comparison possible, but a single listing cannot establish what a typical Phaeton W12 costs in 2026. The listing page also displayed a generated comparison estimate of $13,782–$15,473; that is the page’s estimate, not a verified market-wide valuation. No comprehensive current sample of Phaeton transactions or representative asking prices is established here.

For a particular car, mileage, condition, maintenance records, location, taxes, and fees matter. The listed example’s 107,282 miles is a useful detail for evaluating that car, not a basis for assigning a value to all Phaetons.
Fuel figures are historical specifications, not a current U.S. estimate
Volkswagen’s 2010 technical material reports 14.5 L/100 km combined consumption and 348 g/km CO₂ for a long-wheelbase W12. These are period manufacturer specifications for that stated configuration, not a current U.S. EPA rating or a real-world estimate for every Phaeton. How to assess a Phaeton before buying
A low asking price alone is not enough to judge whether this discontinued, specialized flagship is a sensible purchase. Before committing, evaluate the individual vehicle and its likely costs rather than comparing sticker figures alone.
- Review service records and confirm what maintenance has been completed and when.
- Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with a shop experienced with the Phaeton and W12; the inspection should assess the specific car rather than assume condition from its age or mileage.
- Use the inspection findings to obtain repair estimates for any identified work before deciding what the car is worth to you.
- Compare expected fuel use, insurance, local taxes and fees, and potential repairs with your budget and intended use.
No reliable current, vehicle-specific repair-cost total is established, so a blanket ownership-cost figure would be misleading. Purchase price is only one part of the decision.
