Why Towing Reduces an EV’s Range So Much

An EV loses towing range because it must move extra mass and push a larger shape through the air. Trailer design, load, speed, terrain and weather determine how large the loss is.

Towing cuts an electric vehicle’s range because the battery must supply energy to move the trailer as well as the car, while the trailer also increases aerodynamic drag. Drag rises rapidly with speed, so a boxy trailer at highway velocity can consume far more energy than its weight alone suggests. The loss is not a fixed percentage: trailer shape and load, speed, hills, traffic, weather and the EV’s own efficiency all change the result.

The two main energy penalties: mass and air resistance

The trailer adds mass that the EV must move

Every acceleration, hill and change in speed involves the combined mass of the tow vehicle, occupants, cargo and trailer. A heavier combination requires more force at the tires and more work from the motors. The trailer’s load therefore affects energy use even when it is relatively compact and aerodynamic.

Extra mass also increases the load on components. Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual says towing adds load to the motors, drivetrain, brakes, tires and suspension, and states: “Towing a trailer increases vehicle weight and drag.” That is a description of the physical burden, not a promise of a particular range reduction. A loaded trailer, a steep route and frequent stops can produce a different result from an empty trailer on a flat motorway.

The trailer changes the airflow

A trailer adds frontal area and disturbs the airflow behind the vehicle. The battery must provide additional power to overcome that aerodynamic resistance continuously while the rig is moving. A tall box trailer can impose a much larger air penalty than a low, narrow trailer of similar mass.

Aerodynamic drag is especially important because it increases with the square of speed, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). In practical terms, a moderate increase in cruising speed can produce a disproportionate increase in the energy required to push air aside. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) heavy-duty-vehicle technical chapter illustrates the same nonlinear relationship for a heavy truck; its numerical example should not be treated as a passenger-EV towing result, but it shows why highway speed magnifies air resistance.

Why highway towing can feel dramatically worse

At low speeds, rolling resistance and the energy needed to accelerate the combination make up a larger share of consumption. As speed rises, aerodynamic drag takes a larger share. Towing therefore combines two disadvantages: the trailer adds mass at every speed, and its aerodynamic penalty grows rapidly as speed increases.

Route conditions determine how often the mass penalty appears. A hilly route demands extra energy on climbs. Stop-and-go traffic repeatedly accelerates the trailer. A steady, level road avoids some of those events, but it does not remove the trailer’s continuous drag. Wind can further alter the effective airflow, so two journeys with the same trailer and destination may not produce identical consumption.

There is no universal towing-range percentage

It is tempting to ask whether towing removes 20%, 30% or half of an EV’s range. No single figure is valid for every combination. A meaningful comparison must match the tow vehicle, trailer frontal area and shape, loaded weight, speed, terrain, traffic, weather, tire condition and starting battery state.

NREL describes the planning consequence this way: “It is possible that some BEVs tow trailers, which can lead to increased energy consumption, shorter range, and thus more frequent charging.” The statement identifies the direction of the effect without assigning a universal percentage. Tesla likewise warns that actual energy consumption can vary even when its Trip Planner attempts to adjust estimates for Trailer Mode.

Vehicle efficiency varies before a trailer is attached

DOE’s comparison of model-year 2024 battery-electric vehicles reports EPA combined city/highway consumption from 1.49 to 4.17 miles per kilowatt-hour. Those figures are ordinary EPA test-cycle results, reported by DOE and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for MY 2024; they are not towing measurements. They demonstrate why the same trailer can represent a different burden for an efficient vehicle than for a less efficient one.

DOE also reports typical EV efficiency of 87%–91%, compared with about 30% for a conventional gasoline vehicle, depending on drive cycle and including regenerative braking. That comparison describes normal operation, not towing. High baseline efficiency does not cancel the additional work of moving a trailer; it simply means the vehicle starts with a different energy use per mile.

What regenerative braking can—and cannot—recover

Regenerative braking sends some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy back to the battery during deceleration. DOE’s energy-flow explanation includes energy reaching the wheels and energy recovered through regeneration on the EPA combined city/highway cycle. Those values describe ordinary driving and do not quantify towing.

Regeneration can recover part of the energy lost while slowing, particularly on descents or in traffic, but it cannot eliminate the energy needed to accelerate the heavier combination or push it through the air. Treat it as a recovery mechanism, not a counterweight that makes trailer drag free.

How to estimate your real towing range

The most reliable estimate comes from the exact EV, trailer and route rather than a generic online percentage. Use the following process before committing to a long leg.

  1. Confirm the usable battery and normal consumption. Use the vehicle’s current trip display or manufacturer information for your specific version. Record consumption in miles per kilowatt-hour under conditions similar to the planned trip.
  2. Enter the route with the trailer configuration enabled. If the vehicle offers Trailer Mode or a towing setting, select it before planning. Tesla notes that its Trip Planner may adjust estimates for Trailer Mode but that actual consumption can still differ.
  3. Account for the trailer’s loaded condition. Estimate the real mass with water, equipment and luggage aboard. Note the trailer’s height and width because frontal area affects drag.
  4. Use the planned speed and terrain. A calculation based on city driving will not represent a fast motorway leg. Include hills, likely traffic and prevailing weather in your judgment.
  5. Convert consumption into a leg estimate. Divide the energy you can safely use from the battery by the observed or planned miles-per-kilowatt-hour figure. Do not treat the EPA range or an unladen dashboard estimate as a towing guarantee.
  6. Build in a personal reserve. Leave enough battery to handle a detour, a closed charger, a queue, a headwind or a slower-than-expected charging session. The appropriate reserve depends on your route and access to alternatives; there is no research-supported universal percentage.
  7. Validate on a short trip. Measure consumption over a representative local route before attempting a remote or mountainous journey. Keep speed, load and tire pressures consistent with the planned trip so the result is useful.

Plan for charging, not just miles

Because energy use rises, towing generally shortens each practical driving leg and may require more charging stops. NREL identifies increased charging frequency as a direct consequence of towing-related higher consumption. A route that is comfortable without a trailer can become marginal when the same EV is pulling one.

Check every stop for access

  • Verify that the charging site is open to your vehicle and trailer combination. A charger may be operational but unusable if the trailer cannot clear the entrance or if the stall requires unhitching.
  • Look for sites with enough approach and departure space. Tight parking layouts can turn a routine charging stop into a maneuvering problem.
  • Plan an alternative before departure. A detour, queue or malfunction has a larger effect when each leg consumes more energy.
  • Allow for the time needed to position the rig, unhitch if required and reconnect safely. Charging energy is only part of the stop.

Use the vehicle’s navigation and trip estimate as a planning aid, then compare the predicted battery arrival with your own reserve policy. Manufacturer estimates are not a substitute for checking the route and the trailer’s real consumption.

Vehicle limits and towing equipment are configuration-specific

Do not assume that an EV can tow simply because another version of the same model can. Towing capacity, permitted tongue weight, software support, cooling requirements and approved equipment can vary by model year, market, battery, wheels and other options.

  1. Read the exact owner’s manual for your vehicle and model year.
  2. Check the hitch or receiver label for its rated trailer and tongue loads.
  3. Confirm that the trailer’s loaded weight stays within the vehicle’s limits.
  4. Use only a receiver, wiring and ball mount approved for that vehicle. Tesla’s Model Y manual, for example, describes a compatible receiver and says suitable ball mounts are purchased separately; that instruction does not establish compatibility with another EV.
  5. Follow local lighting, braking, registration and safety requirements before traveling.

These checks protect the drivetrain, brakes, tires and suspension from loads they were not designed to handle, and they prevent a range estimate from being built around an illegal or unsupported setup.

Which trailer characteristics matter most?

Factor Why it changes energy use What to record for planning
Loaded mass Raises the energy needed to accelerate and climb and increases component loads. Actual trailer, cargo, water and equipment weight.
Frontal area and shape Changes the amount of air the rig must displace and the wake behind it. Trailer height, width and overall profile.
Speed Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed, so faster travel magnifies the penalty. Expected motorway and secondary-road speeds.
Terrain and traffic Hills and repeated stops require additional acceleration and climbing energy. Elevation profile, congestion and stop frequency.
Vehicle baseline efficiency A more or less efficient EV starts with a different energy cost per mile. Observed unladen consumption for the exact vehicle and season.
Weather and wind Change rolling and aerodynamic resistance and can shift actual consumption from an estimate. Forecast temperature, wind and precipitation.

How to make the penalty smaller

  • Keep the loaded trailer within its rating. Remove unnecessary cargo and distribute the remaining load according to the trailer and vehicle instructions.
  • Choose a lower-drag configuration when possible. A compact, lower-profile trailer generally presents less frontal area than a tall box, although the exact result depends on the complete combination.
  • Moderate highway speed. Because drag rises with the square of speed, reducing speed can have an outsized effect on the aerodynamic portion of consumption.
  • Use the vehicle’s towing setting. Trailer Mode or an equivalent setting can help the car’s planning and control systems account for the trailer, but it cannot guarantee a particular arrival state of charge.
  • Check the vehicle and trailer before departure. Follow the manual for tire pressures, brakes, lights, hitch security and permissible loads. Mechanical problems can add resistance and create a safety hazard.

How to compare real-world towing reports

Range reports are useful only when their conditions are reasonably comparable. Before applying someone else’s result, check whether the report identifies the same vehicle version, battery, trailer dimensions, loaded mass, speed, route profile, wind and temperature. A result from a lightweight, low trailer at moderate speed cannot be transferred directly to a tall, heavily loaded trailer at motorway speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair comparison between two towing setups, hold as many variables constant as possible and compare energy consumption in miles per kilowatt-hour, not just the displayed miles remaining. Record the starting and ending state of charge, route distance and charging energy when available. A single trip is evidence about that configuration and weather, not a universal rating.

What the answer means for an EV owner

Towing reduces range “so much” when several penalties stack together: the battery moves more mass, the trailer creates additional drag, and highway speed amplifies that drag. The effect is predictable in direction but not in a single percentage. Use the exact vehicle’s limits, measure the loaded combination, plan shorter legs and verify charging access with a reserve for uncertainty.
