Toyota’s Hilux chief engineer says the Tacoma became an independent vehicle for the North American market, while Toyota developed the Hilux for a much broader international audience. The trucks share history—and Tacoma styling deliberately references the original HiLux—but that connection does not make them the same model.
Why isn’t the Tacoma an American Hilux?
Toyota’s clearest answer comes from Masaaki Ishiko, chief engineer for the sixth-generation Hilux. He says that after Hilux production for the U.S. market began at NUMMI during the fifth generation, “the follow-on model, the Tacoma, became independent of the Hilux as a vehicle exclusively for the North American market.” Toyota’s interview with Ishiko describes a change in vehicle identity and market focus, not simply a name change.
Toyota’s current product descriptions reinforce that distinction. The fourth-generation Tacoma, introduced for the 2024 model year, was designed and engineered for the U.S. market. Toyota says its North American CALTY studios handled design, while Toyota Technical Centers in Michigan, Arizona, and California contributed engineering work. Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma announcement also describes Tacoma-specific frame, suspension, and powertrain choices.
Two trucks with different market briefs
Tacoma: North American focus
Toyota positions the modern Tacoma around U.S. buyers and uses the TNGA-F platform, which also underpins larger Toyota trucks. Sharing a platform does not make those vehicles identical: the Tacoma has its own configuration and equipment choices within the platform.

Hilux: international development
Toyota’s generation history says the seventh-generation Hilux launched in 2004 for sale in more than 140 countries and formed part of the IMV project, alongside the Innova and Fortuner. Toyota’s account of the eighth-generation Hilux, launched in 2015, describes development informed by customer feedback around the world and testing across varied roads and climates. Toyota’s Hilux generation history gives the longer timeline.
The difference is therefore more than a badge: Toyota describes the Tacoma as a North American vehicle and the Hilux as a truck developed and sold across international markets.

What the trucks share—and what that does not prove
The Tacoma has a genuine connection to Hilux heritage. Toyota says the 2024 Tacoma’s “narrow body and wide upper grille are a nod to the original HiLux.” That is a stated styling reference, not evidence that the Tacoma is a rebadged Hilux. Toyota separately describes Tacoma-specific engineering and equipment in its 2024 model announcement.
The name also makes more sense in light of the Hilux’s long history. Toyota launched the Hilux in March 1968 with separate-frame construction, coil-spring front suspension, and a leaf-spring rear axle. The Tacoma’s lineage grew out of Toyota’s North American pickup business, but Toyota says the Tacoma became independent as a nameplate for that market.

Why year and market matter in any comparison
A Tacoma-versus-Hilux specification comparison is only meaningful when it identifies the model year and market. The available Toyota releases do not offer a complete same-year, same-market comparison, so figures from different launches should not be treated as proof that one truck is universally more powerful, capable, or larger.
| Example | What Toyota reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 U.S.-market Tacoma launch specifications, Toyota USA, 2023 | Up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft; available hybrid powertrain up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft | Launch figures for the 2024 Tacoma; grade and configuration affect specifications. Toyota’s launch release. |
| 2015 Thailand-market Hilux example, Toyota Motor Corporation | Double-cab example with a 2,755 cc diesel engine rated at 177 PS and 450 Nm | One Thai-market configuration, not a specification for every Hilux. Toyota’s 2015 Hilux launch release. |
The numbers come from different years, markets, and vehicle configurations. They illustrate why a single Hilux specification cannot stand in for the global model, and why a 2024 Tacoma figure should not be presented as a current specification for every Tacoma model year.

What Toyota’s history says about the Hilux’s reach
When Toyota launched the eighth-generation Hilux in May 2015, the company reported that more than 16 million Hilux vehicles had been sold in more than 180 countries and regions. That is Toyota’s reported total as of the 2015 launch, not a current cumulative sales figure. The same launch release quoted Hilux executive chief engineer Hiroki Nakajima describing the development goal as “redefining toughness.” Toyota’s 2015 announcement provides that dated context.
Toyota’s history says the 2004 seventh-generation Hilux was intended for more than 140 countries. That is the historical launch context, not a count of today’s Hilux markets. Its broad international brief contrasts with Toyota’s explicit U.S.-market description of the Tacoma.
