The Renault Clio V6 uses a rear-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout because Renault developed it as a road-going extension of the Clio V6 Trophy racing program and as a modern tribute to the Renault 5 Turbo II. The V6 sits transversely behind the front seats, in the space where a normal Clio carries its rear seats, and drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.
That decision made the car a purpose-built sports machine rather than an ordinary front-engine Clio with a larger motor. Renault had to reinforce the shell, redesign the rear structure, add a dedicated engine carrier and support, widen the body, and provide additional cooling-air inlets. The result retained the Clio name and styling cues but changed the car’s architecture almost completely.

Renault’s reason: racing identity and heritage
Renault’s own history links the road car directly to the Clio V6 Trophy, a competition series created to promote the second-generation Clio. Renault Group Portugal describes the road-going Clio Renault Sport V6 as the direct result of that involvement, rather than as a normal production upgrade to the hatchback.

Renault specifically points to the earlier car’s central-rear engine, rear-wheel drive and muscular appearance. In other words, the Clio V6’s unusual layout was part of its identity: it was meant to evoke a spectacular, competition-bred Renault, not to preserve the practical engineering priorities of a conventional Clio. Renault Group Portugal’s Clio history provides that heritage and Trophy explanation.

From show car to limited production
Renault Germany’s historical account says a mid-engine V6 concept shown at the 1998 Paris motor show attracted enough public interest for Renault to authorize a limited series. It names TWR as the development and manufacturing partner for the first series. Renault Portugal dates the beginning of road-car sales to 2001, while the German account describes the vehicle as completed in November 2000. Those dates describe different milestones, so they should not be treated as a single contradictory launch date. Renault Germany’s press archive records the concept-to-production story and the November 2000 completion date.
What “mid-mounted” means on a Clio V6
“Mid-mounted” does not mean that the engine is under the dashboard or in the front half of the car. On the Clio V6, the V6 is behind the front seats and ahead of the rear axle. It occupies the rear-seat area of the ordinary hatchback, making the car technically a rear-mid-engine design.
The engine is mounted transversely, meaning its crankshaft runs across the car rather than from front to rear. Renault’s technical material describes the engine as centrally installed at the rear. Power goes through a newly developed six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. Renault Germany’s technical wording states that the engine sends its power to the rear wheels through that six-speed gearbox; the Renault technical press material gives the layout and packaging context.

Rear-mid-engine versus rear-engine
A strict technical distinction matters here. A rear-engine car places the engine behind the rear axle. A rear-mid-engine car places most of the engine mass ahead of the rear axle but behind the occupants. The Clio V6 belongs in the second category. Calling it simply “rear-engine” can obscure why Renault chose the former rear-seat compartment and how the car’s structure was arranged.
Why rear-wheel drive follows from that architecture
With the engine behind the occupants, sending drive to the rear wheels creates a direct, compact powertrain arrangement. The Clio V6 was also conceived around the rear-drive identity of the Trophy racer and Renault 5 Turbo II. The manufacturer histories support those competition and heritage reasons; they do not say that Renault selected rear-wheel drive to improve fuel economy, everyday practicality or the traction of a standard Clio.

The rear seats were replaced by an engine compartment
The most visible consequence of the layout is the loss of the Clio’s normal rear passenger area. The V6, gearbox, mounts and associated systems occupy that volume, so the car is effectively a two-seat sports model. The space is not a conventional luggage compartment with an engine added later; it is the central part of the vehicle’s new mechanical package.
Structural changes
Renault’s technical descriptions show why this could not be a simple engine swap. The production car received:
- a reinforced Clio body shell;
- a redesigned rear section;
- an additional rear carrier;
- a new engine support structure;
- a substantially widened rear body; and
- extra air inlets to supply the engine and its cooling systems.
These modifications explain the Clio V6’s broad rear haunches and side intakes. The bodywork is not merely decorative: it encloses the wider mechanical package and provides the airflow that a front-engine Clio would normally obtain from the front of the car.
Why the standard Clio platform could not remain intact
A conventional Clio’s rear structure is designed for a rear bench, suspension loads and a hatchback cargo area. The V6 installation needed a strong cradle, engine and transmission mounts, heat management, service access and airflow in the same region. Reinforcing and redesigning the shell allowed Renault to carry those loads without pretending that the original rear compartment still existed.
This is why the Clio V6 should be understood as a heavily re-engineered derivative. It shares the Clio’s name and recognizable exterior language, but its rear body, supporting structure and drivetrain layout are fundamentally different from those of an ordinary front-engine, front-wheel-drive hatchback.

What Renault’s layout choice changed for the driving concept
Moving the engine behind the seats and driving the rear axle changed the car’s engineering priorities. The front wheels no longer had to combine steering and engine-drive duties, while the rear structure had to carry the engine, gearbox and their loads. Those are general consequences of a rear-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive arrangement, not separate Renault claims about a measured performance advantage.
Renault’s documented motive was more specific: create a road car with the character of the Trophy racer and the visual and mechanical lineage of the Renault 5 Turbo II. That purpose explains why Renault accepted the loss of rear seats, the major body alterations and the complexity of a low-volume production program.
Phase 1 and Phase 2: the important differences
Renault’s heritage material separates the car into two phases. The later Phase 2 was not just a cosmetic refresh: Renault lists more power and revised rear-axle and suspension settings, with the stated result that the car was easier to drive.
| Item | Phase 1 | Phase 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine output | 226 hp, according to Renault’s heritage page (year not stated there) | 255 hp, according to Renault’s heritage page (year not stated there) |
| Rear axle | Original configuration; detailed geometry not stated on the cited heritage page | Revised rear-axle kinematics |
| Suspension | Original settings; detailed values not stated on the cited heritage page | Revised suspension settings |
| Renault’s stated driving effect | Not stated | Made the car easier to drive |
| Production count | Renault’s heritage page gives a combined total rather than a separate Phase 1 total | 1,309 Phase 2 cars, within Renault’s combined total |
The figures in the table come from The Originals Renault Museum. That page states a total of 2,822 cars, including 1,309 Phase 2 examples. Renault Germany’s press archive gives a different total of 2,935. Because both are Renault sources and the totals conflict, any production number should be attributed to its specific source rather than presented as an uncontested fact.
What the Phase 2 changes mean
The power increase is the easiest difference to identify, but the chassis revisions are just as significant for understanding Renault’s development work. Revised rear-axle kinematics alter how the rear wheels move relative to the body, while suspension-setting changes alter the way the car responds to steering, braking and bumps. Renault’s own summary is that these changes made Phase 2 easier to drive; it does not provide a single independent test number that quantifies that improvement.

How the Clio V6 relates to the Trophy racer
The Trophy series supplied the conceptual starting point: a Clio-shaped competition car whose engine and driven axle were moved to the rear. The road car translated that idea into a limited-production vehicle with road equipment and a reinforced, redesigned body. This relationship explains why the Clio V6 feels unlike the front-drive Clio models sold alongside it and why the rear-drive layout was retained even though it sacrificed normal hatchback practicality.
It also explains the car’s visual exaggeration. Wide rear panels, large air openings and the absence of rear-seat packaging are physical reminders of the competition-derived arrangement. They are consequences of fitting and cooling a transverse V6 behind the occupants, not styling flourishes added independently of the mechanical design.

Why is the Clio V6 rear-wheel drive?
Renault built it as a road-going expression of the Clio V6 Trophy and as a tribute to the rear-drive, central-rear-engine Renault 5 Turbo II. The rear-mounted powertrain naturally drives the rear axle through its six-speed manual transmission. Renault’s published histories support that racing and heritage rationale, not claims about economy or ordinary Clio traction.
Where did the rear seats go?
They were displaced by the transverse V6, gearbox, engine carrier, supports and related systems. The former rear-seat zone became the engine compartment, which is why the Clio V6 is effectively a two-seat car and has a radically different rear structure.

It is rear-mid-mounted: behind the front seats but ahead of the rear axle. “Rear-engine” is a looser description that can imply the engine sits behind the axle. For technical accuracy, rear-mid-engine is the better term.

Did Renault simply install a V6 in a normal Clio?
No. Renault reinforced the shell, redesigned the rear section, added a rear carrier and a new engine support, widened the body and added air inlets. Those changes show that the V6 required a new structural and thermal package.
What is the main difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2?
Renault lists 226 hp for Phase 1 and 255 hp for Phase 2. Phase 2 also received revised rear-axle kinematics and suspension settings, which Renault says made it easier to drive.
Are all production totals reliable?
Renault’s own sources disagree. The Originals Renault Museum lists 2,822 cars in total, including 1,309 Phase 2 cars, while Renault Germany lists 2,935. Treat those as source-specific figures rather than a settled single total.
What this means when identifying or maintaining one
Phase, chassis and body details matter because the two phases are not identical and the car is not mechanically equivalent to a regular Clio. A generic Clio repair manual should not automatically be assumed to cover the V6: the Haynes catalog includes Clio manuals, but surfaced coverage explicitly excludes the 2.9-litre V6. Haynes’ Clio manual catalog and the coverage excerpt illustrate why a V6-specific reference should be verified before use.
For scale-model collectors, the phase must also be checked. OttOmobile documents a 1:18 Phase 1 model and lists it as sold out on its product page; availability and specifications can change, so a model should not be treated as evidence about the full-size car’s equipment. OttOmobile’s product page identifies that particular miniature.
The bottom line on Renault’s unusual engineering decision
The Clio V6 has a mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive because Renault wanted a limited-production sports car rooted in the Clio V6 Trophy and the Renault 5 Turbo II, not a practical front-drive hatchback with extra power. Putting the transverse V6 behind the front seats made the rear-mid-engine layout possible, and driving the rear wheels completed the competition-inspired architecture. The price of that character was substantial: the rear seats disappeared, the body and structure had to be redesigned, and the car became one of Renault’s most specialized Clio derivatives.
