Why is the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 so iconic?
Nissan introduced the GT-R version of the tenth-generation Skyline in 1999. The BNR34 brought together a twin-turbocharged inline-six, advanced four-wheel-drive and rear-steering systems, and a distinctively purposeful body. Its reputation also grew beyond the road: a related, but substantially different, R34 race car won the 1999 All-Japan GT Championship series, while the road-going car later gained visibility through Fast & Furious.
Those strands matter together. The R34 is not remembered only for a headline engine figure, nor should the race car’s performance be mistaken for that of a showroom model. Its appeal comes from an engineering package and a story that reached enthusiasts through both motorsport and popular culture.
What makes the R34 GT-R special on the road?
RB26DETT: Nissan’s published specification
For the 2000 Skyline GT-R V-spec II (BNR34), Nissan lists a 2,568 cc RB26DETT inline-six with four valves per cylinder and twin turbochargers. Nissan’s published maximum figures are 206 kW (280 PS) at 6,800 rpm and 392 N·m (40.0 kgm) at 4,400 rpm. These are manufacturer specifications for the cited model, not a fresh dyno measurement or a claim that every modified car produces the same output. Nissan Global’s V-spec II heritage record

More than engine output
The road car’s character also depended on how it put power down and responded to the driver. Nissan’s period technical specifications identify ATTESA E-TS Pro four-wheel drive and Super HICAS rear steering. Together, these systems help explain why the GT-R’s appeal was not simply a powerful engine in a striking body. Nissan’s period technical specifications
Nissan lists the V-spec II with multilink front and rear suspension, ventilated disc brakes at both ends and 245/40ZR18 tyres. Its recorded dimensions are 4,600 mm long, 1,780 mm wide and 1,360 mm high, with a curb weight of 1,560 kg. These values describe the cited V-spec II, not every R34 GT-R configuration.

How do the GT-R, V-spec and V-spec II differ?
The names refer to specific versions and equipment, not interchangeable labels. Nissan describes the V-spec as having dedicated aerodynamic parts, specially tuned suspension and an active limited-slip differential. Its V-spec II heritage record specifically notes a carbon-fibre engine hood with a NACA duct and aluminum pedals.
| Version or category | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|
| Standard GT-R | Road-going GT-R model; the cited heritage details do not assign the V-spec equipment to every GT-R. |
| V-spec | Nissan describes dedicated aero parts, specifically tuned suspension and an active LSD. |
| V-spec II | The 2000 heritage record lists a carbon hood with a NACA duct and aluminum pedals, along with the model specifications above. |
| M-Spec Nür and V-spec II Nür | Final 2002 editions; Nissan Japan reports a combined production limit of 1,000 units. |
| NISMO Z-tune | A distinct NISMO development, not a factory specification common to all R34 GT-Rs. |

What did the R34 GT-R achieve in competition?
Nissan says the Pennzoil NISMO GT-R won the 1999 All-Japan GT Championship series. That result adds a strong motorsport chapter to the R34’s reputation, but the winning car was a competition machine—not a road GT-R with race decals. Nissan describes it as using a racing RB26DETT rated at 500 horsepower and a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout under competition regulations. The road car used ATTESA E-TS four-wheel drive. The final Nür editions
Nissan Japan identifies the M-Spec Nür and V-spec II Nür as 2002 editions and reports a combined production limit of 1,000 units. That figure is Nissan’s published limit for the two editions together, not a count for either version separately. Their limited run helps distinguish them from regular production models in the R34 story. Nissan Japan’s M-Spec Nür heritage record

A separate NISMO development
The Z-tune belongs to the R34’s technical legacy, but it should not be confused with a regular factory trim or assumed to represent every GT-R. NISMO presents it as its own development within the Skyline GT-R lineage, drawing on the RB26DETT and ATTESA E-TS combination associated with that lineage. NISMO Z-tune
How did the R34 become a popular-culture icon?
The R34’s presence in Fast & Furious helped make it recognizable well beyond people following Skyline history or Japanese motorsport. Nissan itself describes the car as emblematic and points to its appearances in the films. That establishes the manufacturer’s cultural framing and the car’s screen visibility; it does not quantify how much the films changed demand or prices.
For enthusiasts who want a hands-on collectible rather than a full-size car, Tamiya documents a 1/24 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec (R34) kit. Tamiya calls it a plastic model assembly kit, so it needs building rather than arriving as a ready-made miniature. Check the retailer’s current stock and edition before buying; the product page is not a Nissan sales channel.
Kyosho also documents a 1/12-scale resin R34 miniature tied to Fast & Furious, but its accessed product page marks it sold out. Its availability may change, so it is not a dependable current buying recommendation. Kyosho’s product page
