Did Lamborghini start as a tractor company?
Ferruccio Lamborghini’s tractor business came before his sports-car company, but the two were separate businesses. Lamborghini Trattori dates its history to 1948. After World War II, Ferruccio began by repurposing combat vehicles into tractors, according to Automobili Lamborghini’s company history. Volkswagen Group’s account likewise describes him as a successful, wealthy tractor manufacturer before he established the automobile company: Volkswagen Group’s history of the Sant’Agata plant.
In the 1950s, he expanded into heating and cooling systems. Automobili Lamborghini describes the car company as Ferruccio’s “third successful business venture.” That sequence matters: the carmaker was a new enterprise built after success in other industries, not a sports-car division of the tractor manufacturer.
How did the tractor business lead to sports cars?
The tractor business gave Ferruccio the means and experience to establish an automobile company, but the available official histories document the sequence more clearly than they explain his personal motivation. They establish the prior businesses and the car company’s launch; they do not substantiate the familiar story that a dispute with Enzo Ferrari directly caused him to build sports cars.

The Ferrari-clutch episode is often repeated as the origin story. Treat it as an anecdote rather than a verified cause: the official histories cited here do not confirm it, though their silence does not prove the episode never happened. What is firmly established is that Ferruccio moved from tractors and heating and cooling systems to a separate car company in 1963.
From the 350 GTV prototype to the first production Lamborghini
Automobili Lamborghini was established in Sant’Agata Bolognese in 1963. The 350 GTV was not a production car. The first production model was the 350 GT, presented in 1964. Lamborghini describes it as a 2+1 with a V12 engine originally designed for racing, a five-speed gearbox and independent suspension. The distinction marks the real progression: a new company, a prototype reveal, then a production model.
