The FBI said attacks on Tesla vehicles and sites in at least nine states since January 2025 involved arson, gunfire, vandalism and graffiti. FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the attacks “domestic terrorism,” but that official characterization is not a court finding that every incident meets a particular legal definition. The FBI’s March 21, 2025 alert describes the incidents it had identified at that time; it is not a current cumulative count.
Why the FBI opened a coordinated investigation
The FBI’s March 21, 2025 public alert described incidents at Tesla vehicles, dealerships, storage lots and charging stations in at least nine states since January. It cited arson, gunfire, vandalism and graffiti expressing grievances against people the perpetrators appeared to regard as racists, fascists or political opponents. The bureau said known incidents appeared to involve lone offenders and had taken place at night. The Associated Press reported that FBI Director Kash Patel announced a task force to coordinate investigative efforts with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Patel said, “This is domestic terrorism. Those responsible will be pursued, caught, and brought to justice.” Associated Press, March 2025
Who called the attacks “domestic terrorism”?
Attorney General Pamela Bondi used that language in a March 18, 2025 statement: “The swarm of violent attacks on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism.” She said the Justice Department would continue investigating and pursue people involved, including those coordinating or funding crimes. Those are officials’ descriptions of the wave of attacks, not findings in individual criminal cases. In a contemporaneous AP report, Spencer Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas office, emphasized that classification could be uncertain: “Was this terrorism? Was it something else? It certainly has some of the hallmarks that we might think — the writing on the wall, potential political agenda, an act of violence. None of those factors are lost on us.” Associated Press, March 2025
What the Las Vegas case does—and does not—establish
On March 27, 2025, the Justice Department announced that Las Vegas resident Paul Hyon Kim had been charged by criminal complaint in connection with an arson at a Tesla collision business. The department described allegations involving fires, gunshots, five vehicles damaged or destroyed, and graffiti. A complaint states allegations; it does not establish guilt. The case is an example of the allegations investigators pursued, not proof that every reported attack had the same motive, perpetrator or legal status. A charge against one person should not be treated as a conviction or as a resolution of other incidents.
Were peaceful Tesla protests connected to the attacks?
AP reported that protests arose in response to Elon Musk’s role in the Trump administration. The Tesla Takedown group described its demonstrations as peaceful and opposed violence and vandalism. The cited reporting discusses protests and attacks in the same broader period, but does not establish that peaceful demonstrators or the group organized the attacks on property. Protest activity and arson, gunfire or vandalism are distinct.

How to report a threat or suspicious activity
The FBI advised people to stay alert around Tesla-related sites. It identified specific violent threats online, unusual surveillance and attempts to access restricted areas as potential indicators of threat activity. For an immediate emergency, call 911. The FBI also listed local law enforcement, FBI field offices, 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) and tips.fbi.gov as reporting channels. FBI reporting guidance FBI threat indicators
